MacDonald said she was fortunate to sell almost all of the books but says she did not do it alone, several members of the community were involved in the process as well. “I would like to thank the staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Center, Emma Simpson, Sue LeBlanc, Staff of the Alder Point Post office, members of the St. Matthew Wesley United Church Auction group and Esther Blakeney for the assistance they have provided in her fund raising efforts.

MacDonald says she could not be more pleased with the response she has received from people who have read it. “When I first released the book in October 2011 I was a little apprehensive, I thought that perhaps I may have shared too much with my readers but judging from the immense response I received from those who have read it, my worries were needless. So many people have called me, approached me on the street or while out shopping telling me how much the enjoyed my book. It was very rewarding and affirming to know that it was received so well.” MacDonald says she really had no intention of writing about her illness, in fact she said it would have been the last thing she would think about while going through it. It was her husband Ed who suggested she journal about the things that were happening to her. She did as he suggested never intending to use the information. As time went by and life was getting back to normal she said she was happy to have her journals to refer to. “I can’t say writing the book changed my life in any big way but it did allow me to record my experiences in hopes of maybe affecting change in the life of a women who may find herself dealing with the devastation that comes along with such a profound diagnose.”

COMMUNITY PROFILE By Kim Rideout

Annual Haunted House This past weekend saw the Johnny Miles Festival Society Haunted House Sub-Committee present their annual Haunted House at the Cape Breton Exhibition Grounds in North Sydney. This event as always is one that requires a great deal of work and preparation on the part of the subcommittee and their efforts were clearly seen. As with any event it takes many volunteers to not only put it together but also to carry out the event and this event was no different. There were a great number of people, Community organizations and businesses that worked together to make this event possible. The sub-committee began meeting months ago to design the layout of the Haunted House as well as to organize a fundraiser to help make the event possible. Members of the committee as well as volunteers worked together to sell tickets on a Halloween basket with the draw taking place on the last night of the Haunted House which was held from October 26th – 28th.

Not only did members of the sub-committee along with volunteers work to design the Haunted House but several people spent days putting the event together in the form of the Haunted Halloween Maze at the Exhibition Grounds. This is a tireless undertaking and those that undertook this project deserve tremendous gratitude.. The event itself was the largest to date with a great number of people taking part as cast and crew for the event over the three day period. It also saw its largest number of people in attendance and the sub-committee is very thankful to each and every one that took part. This event is held each year as a fund raiser for the Annual Johnny Miles Festival which is held each summer. Hats off to all for giving the community a weekend of thrills and chills to kick off Halloween this year!!!!!

By Paul Power SEX PISTOLS – “Classic Albums-Never Mind The Bollocks” (Eagle Vision) I’m sure a lot of people didn’t even realize that last Saturday marked a musical milestone, the day 35 years ago that the music world was turned upside down and inside out by 4 London lads known as the Sex Pistols. The “Never Mind The Bollocks” album (the band’s only studio album) was released on October 27, 1977 and pandemonium ensued; record stores in the UK were threatened with legal prosecution if they even displayed the album’s cover, and one vendor was charged and taken to court, but it was decided that the word “bollocks” was an acceptable Old English slang word. The songs “God Save The Queen” and “Anarchy In The U.K.” became legendary punk rock anthems and “Holiday In The Sun” and “Pretty Vacant” became punk standards as well. The band, especially Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten, were looked upon as the musical equivalent of The Antichrist, but to punks they were like Spartacus. This DVD is from the phenomenal “Classic Albums” television series, which goes behind the scenes with some of the most influential musicians of our time as they revisit the making of their classic albums. This one features interviews with Sex Pistols members John Lydon (Johnny Rotten), Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock. I read John Lydon’s

autobiography, “Rotten-No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs” and I am a huge fan of the man’s work, so to see him here in his full ‘Rotten’ glory is a viciously delightful treat. The main instigators give the viewer a track-bytrack guide to the album, with lots of insight into the lyrics and the music; guitarists will love the clips with Steve Jones talking about where those classic riffs came from. Other interviews feature cover designer Jamie Reid and manager Malcolm McLaren as they wade in on the chaos, as well as commentary from producer/engineer Bill Price and producer Chris Thomas. In all of the “Classic Albums” documentaries, archival footage is what makes them so enjoyable and historic; seeing the rare performance of “EMI” and “Seventeen” here is a treat, combined with the TV performances, music videos and old film footage, especially the ones featuring Sid Vicious, you get a rare look at the Sex Pistols, the music and all the controversy. This DVD also features bonus interviews not shown on television and believe me, they will make you raise an eyebrow or two! In retrospect, the “Never Mind The Bollocks” album seems rather tame now but in its day it literally set off riots. Johnny Rotten would no doubt say “bloody Marvelous” and that’s exactly what this DVD is.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY We want to wish Melissa MacDonald a special Happy Birthday on October 31st. With Love from Dad & Mom.

Local Actor/Singer Featured In Movie You know him as a multi talented musician and singer with the award winning Cottars, but Ciaran MacGillvray is now exploring his creativity with a role in the upcoming movie Copperhead. Copperhead is unlike any Civil War movie to date. It is a film of the war at home—of a family ripped apart by war, of fathers set against sons and daughters, of a community driven to an appalling act of vengeance against a man who insists on exercising his right to free speech during wartime. A story of the violent passions and burning feuds that set ablaze the homefront during the Civil War, Copperhead the movie is also a timeless and deeply moving examination of the price of dissent, the place of the individual amidst the hysteria of wartime, and the awful cost of war—a cost measured not in dollars but in fractured families, broken loves, and men dead before their time. Ciarán is a multifaceted actor and virtuoso musician/singer from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He got his start in acting when he was 7 when he appeared in the television series, “Pit Pony.” Since then he has performed on stage, in film and on television as an actor and in concert halls, festivals and on many recordings as a musician and singer. He’s won 2 East Coast Music Awards, 2 MIANS Awards, the Tic Butler Memorial Award and has been nominated for a Gemini Award. He is currently a member of the 2012-2013 graduating class of the prestigious Neptune Theatre’s acting school. You can check out the movie and Ciaran at the URL below -
