Celebrating the Centennial of Enrico Caruso's Debut in America

Celebrating the Centennial of Enrico Caruso's Debut in America

Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) The most famous tenor of his time, Enrico Caruso is renowned for his contributions to the modern school of singing. He was born on February 27, 1873 to a poor family in Naples, Italy. As a child, he sang in churches and made his debut as a tenor in Naples in 1894. As a young man, he performed in small theaters throughout Southern Italy. In 1897 he auditioned for Puccini with an aria from La Boheme--after which the baffled composer uttered the celebrated line, "Who sent you to me? God himself?" Soon after, Caruso began performing in the great opera houses of Italy and by the turn of the century had already achieved international fame performing in Argentina, England, France, Russia, Spain, Germany and Austria.

Nino Martini (1902-1976) Born in Verona in 1902, tenor Nino Martini studied in Paris, made his debut in Milan in 1925 and came to the U.S. in 1929. Martini had his Hollywood movie debut in 1930 with Parade and appeared in four additional films. He performed throughout the country and on CBS radio. During 13 consecutive seasons at the Metropolitan Opera, from 1933-46, he gave 110 performances. Martini died in Verona in 1976. The Italian Heritage & Culture Committee For more than a quarter century the committee has organized events, concerts, exhibits and lectures, celebrating Italian culture in New York, the largest Italian city outside Italy. Each year a theme representative of the history and culture of Italy and Italian Americans is highlighted. New Web Site-www.italyculturemonth.org The committee promotes Italian culture focusing on schools and taking a leadership role promoting Italy and its cultural contributions. The web site (www.italyculturemonth.org) is the place to go for anything Italian: language, newspapers, culture, travel and many other resources on Italy and Italian culture. The Fondazione Verona per L’Arena The foundation supports and promotes all theatres in Verona. It is a global foundation with 350 members in Italy and abroad. The American Foundation for Verona promotes Verona as a center of Italian opera and gives scholarships to American musicians and singers to study in a Verona based masters program.

On November 23, 1903, Caruso made his American debut in Rigoletto at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and for the next seventeen years, he opened each season at the Metropolitan, appearing in 36 different roles. While still in his prime, Caruso took violently ill on Christmas Day, 1920. He returned to Naples and died there on August 2, 1921. Ciao Italia...Experience Italy online
