Luminaria 2014 – 30 Years Of Lighting Up Streamwood! It’s a Streamwood tradition like no other! Join us on Friday, December 5, at 6:30 pm for Luminaria 2014 – the 30th Annual lighting event! Hundreds of volunteers, civic organizations, and families help bring the holiday spirit to Streamwood by lining the medians on Park Boulevard with luminaria. The entire Municipal Campus is also filled with lights, as luminaria line Village Hall, the Police Station, and Veterans Memorial. Back at Village Hall, keep warm with cookies, hot cocoa and friendship and visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Don’t forget to bring your camera! Enjoy favorite holiday tunes, sung by the Streamwood Choral Society. The Park District’s Starlight Dance Company will delight you with dances from their upcoming show, Nutty Cracker Suite.

Cultures of Our Community Join the Village’s Community Relations Commission as it hosts its annual “Cultures of Our Community” celebration. This free event takes place Saturday, November 8 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Poplar Creek Public Library (1405 S. Park Ave.). It will feature many different cultures represented in Streamwood, such as Chinese, Egyptian, Hispanic, and Polish.

Thousands of colorful lights are strung on the trees surrounding the Veterans Memorial. Two lucky winners are selected to help Village President Billie Roth light the holiday tree. When the switch is thrown, our official holiday tree, the largest spruce in the Memorial, will glimmer with thousands of bright white lights. If you, your family, or your organization would like to help light luminaria, contact the Village at (630) 736-3802. Join your friends and neighbors for this uniquely Streamwood tradition. Help bring the holidays to light!

Throughout the event, enjoy performances such as traditional dances, demonstrations, and short presentations about other cultures. Light snacks from around the world will be available throughout the event.

Village Board News Text to 9-1-1 Our 9-1-1 calls are taken by Northwest Central Dispatch. You can now send texts to 9-1-1 for emergency services if you are unable to make a phone call. Phone calls are preferable. Here are some tips for an effective text to 9-1-1:

Recent Board Actions

• • • •

The first text you send should be brief, contain the location of the emergency and type of help needed. Be prepared to answer follow-up questions from the call taker. Use simple words – do not use abbreviations. Remember, never text and drive!

Shop Local for the Holidays The holidays are here! Be sure to shop locally this season. This helps to support your community. When you shop locally, sales taxes stay in town and support Streamwood services.

St. John’s School Principal Mary Ellyn Billmeyer accepts the Proclamation recognizing the school’s Blue Ribbon status from Trustee Mary Thon.

St. John’s Named a Blue Ribbon School The Village Board issued a proclamation congratulating St. John the Evangelist Catholic School on being named a National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Secretary of Education. Students had to test in the top fifteen percent of all schools in the nation to receive this honor. Eagle Scout Recognition The Board recently recognized the efforts of a local Eagle Scout. This young man’s project consisted of building a gazebo on the municipal campus. His gift to the community will be treasured for years to come. Domestic Violence Proclamation The Village Board proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Representatives from the Community Crisis Center were on hand to accept the proclamation to increase awareness of domestic violence in our communities.

Shopping locally has never been easier. Visit the Village’s website at www.streamwood.org for a complete list of local businesses to help you find that perfect gift. Businesses post coupons and specials on the site, making shopping easy and economical. This year, the Village has made shopping in the Village even easier by launching the Shop Streamwood application, available through the Google Play Store, Apple App Store, or our QR code. This app is a great way to connect not only to local businesses, but to the Village as well. Best of all, it’s free to download and use! Check it out today!

Public Safety Donations The Streamwood Police Department received several donations from local organizations. VFW Post 5151 donated to the DARE and child safety seat programs, giving $500 to each. The Kiwanis Club of Streamwood also donated $500 to the child safety seat program. Both donations will help the department support these programs in the community. Fire Department Open House

Message From The Village President

The Fire Department recently opened its doors to the public for its annual open house. Despite less than perfect weather, hundreds of residents stopped by to explore fire trucks, try on fire gear, and watch a live sprinkler demonstration.

The days are getting shorter. The weather is just a bit colder. The holiday season is upon us. This is my favorite time of the year. Everyone seems excited and is looking for opportunities to get together, give thanks and help one another. We invite you to join us on November 8 as the Community Relations Commission hosts its annual Cultures of Our Community event. This is an excellent opportunity to get together with your neighbors and learn about the many cultures and traditions that make our community strong. We hope to see you at this event.

President Billie Roth lends a hand at last year’s Holiday Helping shopping event.

Veterans Day allows us to honor and thank those who gave of themselves to keep our country strong. Our annual Veterans Day Ceremony will be held on November 11, at 11:00 am at the Veterans Memorial. Please join us as we thank all those who served. Shopping locally is an easy and convenient way to help our community. Local businesses provide jobs for your neighbors. Sales taxes help to pay for Village services, while reducing our reliance on property taxes. Make your tax dollars work for you. Download our app. Visit our businesses. During this holiday season, Shop Smart, Shop Local, Shop Streamwood! Consider helping those less fortunate. Donate coats, mittens, or scarves, or contribute to the local food pantry. For more information, please contact Hanover Township at (630) 837-0301 or the Senior Center at (630) 483-5600.

Election Day – November 4, 2014 The Gubernatorial Election is November 4. Elections are for Governor and other statewide offices, one US Senate seat, all US Representative seats, our Illinois State Senators and Representatives, and other county-wide positions. Polls will be open from 6:00 am-7:00 pm. You MUST vote in your home precinct on Election Day. For information on polling places, visit the Cook County Clerk’s website at www.cookcountyclerk.com. Election Day registration and voting is available at Hoffman Estates Village Hall (1900 Hassell Road) and at the Schaumburg Library (130 S. Roselle Road). Exercise your right – vote!

We’re also hosting our Third Annual Holiday Helping event. This event helps families, who have fallen on hard times, have a Merry Christmas. Children are given gift cards to a local business, and firefighters and police officers volunteer to help the children shop for gifts for their families. After shopping, the children get to visit with Santa Claus. Last year, we helped 17 families, including 40 children, have a happy holiday. We hope to do even more this year, but we could use your help. For information or to donate, contact [email protected] or (630) 736-3802. What would the holidays be without Luminaria? We’re celebrating 30 years of lighting up Streamwood for the holidays! Our Luminaria Celebration will be held this year on December 5. We invite you to join us as we kick off the holiday season. Consider volunteering to light luminaria. Visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Enjoy warm refreshments. Stay for our holiday tree lighting. There’s nothing like starting off the holidays with family, friends, and neighbors. The Village Board looks forward to seeing you at these upcoming events. And, we would like to wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

Do You know a Family in Need?

Sincerely,

Applications are being accepted for children and families to enroll in the Township’s holiday programs. Applications can be mailed to, or dropped off at, the Astor Avenue Community Center (7341 Astor Ave., Hanover Park) Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.

Fall Back! November 2 Daylight Savings Time will end on November 2 at 2:00 am. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour. It’s also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

CPR for Healthcare Providers Our CPR for Healthcare Providers course is designed for professionals such as nurses, doctors, paramedics, and nursing students. If you need a CPR card for employment, this is the class for you. Our next class dates are November 8 and December 13. The cost of this class is $50.00 for residents and $65.00 for non-residents.

Curbside Mailboxes Please check your mailbox before the snow falls this season. Make sure the post is in good condition and is properly placed. Mailboxes are to be installed 42 inches above the ground, with the opening 12 inches behind the curb. Mailboxes installed too close to the curb are in danger of being in the path of the snowplows. Improperly placed mailboxes will not be repaired or replaced by the Village in the event of snowplow-related damage. Please remember to put your house number on both sides of the box to aid emergency personnel.

Fire Hydrants Residents, please shovel out fire hydrants after a heavy snowfall. Doing this will allow Village services to reach the hydrants quicker in the event of an emergency. Just a few extra shovelfuls of snow can help protect your property, your neighbors, and your family!

Kiwanis Coat Drive The Kiwanis Club of Streamwood is hosting its annual coat drive. Collection bins are available throughout the community, including at Village Hall. Coats, gloves, hats, and scarves in good condition will be donated to families in need in our area.

Winter Parking Rules In order to ensure that our streets can be easily cleared during snow storms, residents are permitted to park across the sidewalk starting on December 1. Winter parking rules remain effective through February 28.

Rental Licensing With the end of the year upon us, it is time to renew your rental license. All renewals must be submitted to the Community Development Department by December 31. If they are submitted after that date, late charges may apply. If you own a rental property, but do not have a rental license, please note that all residential properties in the Village that are not owner-occupied require a rental license. This is a yearly license that includes an annual inspection to ensure all rental properties conform to Village codes. Forms are available either on the Village’s website (www.streamwood.org), or at Village Hall in the Community Development Department. If you have any questions regarding rental licensing, please contact the department at (630) 736-3839.

Recreational Vehicle Parking Regulations As residents begin to store their boats and campers, please be reminded of the regulations for parking recreational equipment at your house. • No RV can block the sidewalk • No RV in the front yard can be more than eight feet (8’) in height • All RVs must be stored on asphalt, concrete or approved pavers • No RV stored on a residential lot can be more than thirty-five feet (35’) long

Frequently Asked Questions Q: How can I keep snow from the plows out of my shoveled driveway? A: When you shovel your driveway, pile your snow to the right side of your driveway. Keep a strip to the left of your driveway and along the street clear. The snow in the plow blade will have someplace to go that isn’t your nice clean driveway!

Pillars of Honor In 2004, the World War II Memorial opened to the public in our nation’s capital. The Memorial is dedicated to all who served during World War II. Making it to Washington D.C. can be difficult for anyone, especially for World War II veterans. Pillars of Honor, Inc. is a 501(c)-3 non-profit organization that brings the original-scale model of the memorial to veterans. On Sunday, November 9, Hanover Township and Streamwood High School are sponsoring the Pillars of Honor, Inc. Traveling Model WWII Memorial Monument. The presentation is set for 1:00 pm at Streamwood High School (701 W. Schaumburg Road). Admission is free. This event is open to all veterans and the general public. A patriotic program will include a presentation of the colors, live patriotic musical performances, and historical presentation of the memorial. For more information, visit www.pillarsofhonor.org or call (847) 954-0520.

Veterans Day Veterans Day provides us the opportunity to honor all American veterans. It allows us to rededicate ourselves to the cause of peace, and to express our appreciation for the sacrifices they have made to keep our country free. Join us as we honor and thank our veterans.

Going Green This Winter Time Your Lights The Village’s Natural Resource Conservancy Commission recommends putting your holiday lights on a timer. This will help reduce energy use by turning off the lights during the day or late at night, even if you forget!

Holiday Lights Recycling Program This holiday season, the Village of Streamwood will again partner with Elgin Recycling for a Holiday Lights Recycling Program. The program will run from November 1, 2014 through February 1, 2015. You can recycle old holiday lights at four (4) convenient locations around the Village: Village Hall, Public Works, Poplar Creek Public Library, and Park Place Family Recreation Center. Types of lights that are accepted through this program include mini-lights, Italian lights, C7 lights, C9 lights, rope lights, and LED lights, as well as extension cords. Simply place old, broken, and unused lights, cords, and strands in the designated containers during normal business hours. For more information about the Holiday Lights Recycling Program, please visit www.streamwood.org, or track our progress at www.elginrecycling.com.

Tips for an Energy Efficient Winter

Electronics Recycling With the holidays upon us, many of us can count on getting a new device. The question is, what do we do with our old ones? Regular garbage service will not take electronics. There are some places locally that will. You can find a list of locations that accept electronics on the Village’s website (www.streamwood.org). You can also visit the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s website at http://www.epa.state.il.us/land/electronic-waste-recycling/index.html. Sam’s and Walmart stores will accept TVs, cell phones, computers, and some other electronics at no charge. The Goodwill Donation Center (644 S. Sutton Rd.) will also accept TVs, computers, and most electronics. Donors can receive tax credits from their donation. If you have a large TV and need assistance with getting it out of your home, you can call 1-800-GOTJUNK. There will be a service charge for pickup.

Emerald Ash Borer Update The Village has been aggressively working on combatting the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). We adopted a plan to mitigate the damage the EAB has on our urban forest. The plan includes educating citizens, and removing and replacing public trees.

The Natural Resource Conservancy Commission offers the following tips for a more energy efficient winter: • Use non-toxic products such as clean clay cat litter, sand, or fireplace/stove ash instead of salt or chemical de-icers. • Use a shovel or broom to clear snow from your sidewalk, porch, or driveway rather than gasoline-powered snow blowers. • Lower your thermostat (or install a programmable thermostat) at night and when you’re away - 10 degrees can reduce your heating bill by 10%-20%. • Make sure your heating system is operating at its most efficient. Have a contractor perform a routine checkup before winter hits. • Weather-strip your windows and caulk any cracks you find in the window frames.

Since the EAB was confirmed in the Village, 2,108 ash trees have been removed and 998 trees have been replaced. The Village plans on replacing almost all of the trees removed depending on location restraints and utility conflicts. Most ash trees will be removed by early 2016. Replacements will be planted by 2017. Species diversity will be a planting objective to better protect our community’s trees in the future.

• Open curtains, drapes, and blinds that receive direct sunlight during the day. Close the window coverings at night to keep the heat in.

If you have any questions regarding trees, including ash trees on private property, please call the Forestry Division at (630) 736-3850.
