Mogens billede i ny kontekst

Mogens Lassen Architect Mogens Lassen (1901-1987) is among the greatest and most influential of Danish architects, a pioneer of Danish Functionalism, and is internationally renowned for his characteristic architecture. Mogens Lassen was inspired by the German design school Bauhaus, and its geometric shapes recur often in his iconic designs. 3

4

Flemming Lassen Architect Flemming Lassen (1902-1984) was a Modernist and part of the movement that brought Functionalism to Denmark. Flemming Lassen is particularly well known for his work with Arne Jacobsen on the award-winning House of the Future and Søllerød Town Hall, and his furniture has also achieved international recognition. 5

Locally made & fine Craftsmanship ”Good craftsmanship should be appreciated.” Mogens Lassen, the man behind the quotation and designer of the iconic Kubus candleholder, was well aware of the importance of craftsmanship. The two architect brothers, Mogens and Flemming Lassen, shared the same approach to craftsmanship – good craftsmanship is not just synonymous with functionality and aesthetics, but also with quality. At by Lassen, we feel exactly the same way about craftsmanship, which is also why we manufacture our products locally. ‘Local manufacturing’ isn’t just a stamp on a product. It’s our firm belief.

The Lassen brothers always knew that they would become architects. Their enthusiasm spread to their good friend Arne Jacobsen, and they convinced him to become an architect. Later, the brothers received a letter of thanks from Jacobsen’s father for convincing his son also to become an architect. 11

MY KU BU S

We have invited two stylists to reveal what their Kubus means to them...

Natalia Sanchez Echevarria, Interior designer and stylist, Spatial Code “I received my Kubus candleholder as a gift 15 years ago. It stands on my desk, where it is surrounded by other objects that I come across in my endless inquisitiveness for beautiful things. My interior design style is a harmonious mix of various styles – everything that enters my home has a story and a special significance for me.”

Mette Helena Rasmussen, Artist, interior stylist owner of Retro Villa. “I own 3 Kubus candleholders. They can stand up to a lot of use, and I think they become more beautiful with age, patina and use. The candleholders fit perfectly into my home, which is a cornucopia of impressions, colours and curiosities. They compliment the art and the unique objects that I source at flea markets extremely well.” 13

Mogens Lassen’s Kubus candleholder from 1962 is a classic design icon that unites unparalleled Danish craftsmanship, functionality, aesthetics and quality. While the Kubus candleholder was originally intended for family and architect friends, it now adorns countless homes around the world. Here, two Danish stylists show how they decorate their own personal spaces with the Kubus candleholder.

About The Tired Man Flemming Lassen designed the overstuffed armchair, The Tired Man, in 1935 for the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Competition. According to Flemming Lassen himself, the aim of the chair was for the person sitting in it to feel “like a polar bear cub held by its mother in the middle of the ice cap feeling warm and safe”.

Mingle The Mingle sofa was designed in 1935. Flemming Lassen wanted to create a sofa made for conversation with a comfort that invited people to stay seated and talk together for long periods of time. The armrests were designed to encircle the sitters, generating intimacy and transforming the sofa into a cosy place to relax. Flemming Lassen took inspiration from both French elegance and modern Italian style, and transferred the trends and his own ideas to a small, upholstered sofa called Mingle. 37

About ML42 In 1942 Mogens Lassen designed the stool ML42 as a piece for a furniture exhibition held at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art. He took inspiration from the stools used by the shoemakers of the past, and transferred the light, elegant look to the creation of this sculptural three-legged stool. The stool ML42 is still manufactured in Denmark to this day with a focus on quality and Danish craftsmanship, and is considered a collector’s item by international design connoisseurs. 47

Twin Mogens Lassen’s preferred form was the square and stringent shape of the cube, and it is the source of the small table Twin. With its flexible top, which features a different surface on each side, Twin offers the potential for a variety of design expressions in one and the same table. Use Twin as a side table, night table or place several of them together to create a coffee table. Mogens Lassen had a playful side and for him, it was an honour to combine form and function. In his spirit, by Lassen has created the unique table known as Twin. 53

About Flow In 1946, Mogens Lassen took part in a competition to design wallpaper with a contemporary pattern. The result was a series of graphic wallpapers including ‘Flow’. Today, the wallpaper continues to look modern and it adds character and atmosphere wherever it appears. No wonder he won the competition.

About Line Mogens Lassen designed throughout his entire life, and he could never stop working on pieces he had already completed. In 1983 he reapproached his own geometric candleholders, and the result was Line, whose shape was conceived through a mathematical formula. The two candleholders form a single line, and the architectural look fits perfectly with contemporary minimalism. 85
