Message from the Chairman The Annual Fund of the Annual Fund

Making a difference

Thank you to all alumni, governors, staff, parents and friends for your contribution to this year’s Annual Fund which ended on 31 July 2008. Each gift really does make a difference, and collectively your gifts have raised over £650,000 in unrestricted funding. You have helped to make this the Annual Fund’s most successful year to date. This donor report recognises all of you who have contributed to the Annual Fund this year, and shows you how much your contribution has impacted life at LSE. As you will see, the list of projects that your donations have supported is varied and makes the student experience and reputation of LSE stronger by supporting projects which may not have otherwise received funding. Your support of the Annual Fund is invaluable as it helps LSE remain a world class institution. Private support and especially your unrestricted gifts help to ensure that we can continue to provide outstanding facilities, resources and rewards. Thank you.

Sir Michael Lickiss, BSc Economics 1955 Chairman of the Annual Fund

The impact of your gifts From 1 August 2006 – 31 July 2007 the Annual Fund received over £600,000 to support projects around the campus and beyond. These projects would not have occurred without your support.

Thanks to the support of alumni, governors, parents, staff and friends of LSE, the Annual Fund has had its most successful year to date. Over £650,000 in unrestricted funds has been raised to provide support to projects which will greatly impact the School and the life of its students. This is a 10 per cent increase on last year’s total. Your collective support is an investment in LSE’s future and helps to maintain the School’s standing as a world class institution. Without your generous support many of the programmes and activities that make LSE unique would not be able to occur.

‘As a recent graduate, and currently a sabbatical officer of the Students’ Union, I have had the opportunity to witness first-hand the impact of the Annual Fund. I believe every aspect of the student experience has been improved during my time at LSE due to the Annual Fund. This extends from the educational experience to extra curricular activities and even lending a helping hand during times of hardship.’ Libby Meyer, SU Treasurer, 2007-08

Thank you for choosing to invest in the future of LSE.

Gifts received from 1 August 2006 – 31 July 2007 were spent on:

What difference will your gifts make?

Dr Mary Blair, Director of Development and Alumni Relations Andrew Farrell, Director of Finance and Facilities Professor George Gaskell, Pro-Director, Planning and Resources Sir Michael Lickiss, Chairman of the Annual Fund Dr Eileen Munro, Reader in Social Policy Applications are invited from any member of the LSE community. Information about awards made and how you can apply will be available on the Annual Fund website at www.lse.ac.uk/annualfund

• £9,005 for bursaries for Grimshaw Club academic trips to assist with the cost of students attending Grimshaw International Relations club trips abroad. • £50,000 for flexible hardship funding for the New Futures Fund which supports students in need at the School who might not otherwise receive additional funding to assist them in their education.

These awards help young members of the teaching faculty at LSE promote and support their research. • £20,000 to start a new initiative, the Teaching Innovation Awards, to reward academic departments for advancements in teaching and learning. • £41,266 to help make the CND Archive in the Library a permanent resource.

‘The Annual Fund grant has been crucial to the work of the Telling the Story of a Peace Movement project. Cataloguing is the bedrock on which the promotion and use of our archival collections is grounded, and the generosity of the Annual Fund in supporting this essential work will ensure that an important part of the history of post Second World War Britain will be available to scholars and the public, now and in the future.’ Sue Donnelly, LSE Archivist

• £50,000 to start a new programme entitled the ‘Scholars at Risk’ programme. This programme enables the School to bring academic scholars, whose life or work is at risk in their home country, to LSE.

The event will greatly assist the School as it re-invigorates its efforts in Africa.’ Gus Stewart, Director, Research and Project Development Division

Reunion Giving

coming back, giving back

Every year hundreds of alumni return to campus to celebrate their anniversary reunion and catch up with old classmates. Many alumni decide to mark their anniversary year by making a collective Class Gift to the School through the Annual Fund. The value of an LSE education lasts a lifetime. Alumni often tell us of their fond memories as they revisit their old haunts and discover how life at LSE has changed since graduation. 45th Anniversary – Classes of 1962 and 1963 This reunion took place on the 19 and 20 September 2008. As of 31 July 2008, the Class of 1962 has given £8,845 to the Annual Fund, and a further £377,800 in major gifts and pledges to the School. The Class of 1963 has given £20,006 to the Annual Fund in class gifts, and £197,660 in major gifts and pledges.

40th Anniversary – Classes of 1968 and 1969 This reunion took place on the 19 and 20 September 2008. As of 31 July 2008, the Class of 1968 has given £20,304 to the Annual Fund. The Class of 1969 has given £14,538 to the Annual Fund in class gifts, and £248,500 in major gifts and pledges.

‘The reunion weekend reminded me of the truly unique nature of LSE. Speaking to old friends from across the globe and finding out what they have done since graduating demonstrated the real impact that LSE has had on all of our lives. My time at the School has provided me with opportunities in my career and opened doors to me that would otherwise have been closed. By making a class gift I feel I can truly give something back to an institution that has given me so much. Thank you to everyone that joined with us in making a gift.’

25th Anniversary – Classes of 1982 and 1983 This reunion took place on the 11 and 12 July 2008. As of 31 July 2008, the Class of 1982 has given £17,051 to the Annual Fund. The Class of 1983 has given £10,014 to the Annual Fund in class gifts, and £557,000 in major gifts and pledges. 20th Anniversary – Classes of 1988 and 1989 This reunion took place on the 11 and 12 July 2008. As of 31 July 2008, the Class of 1988 has given £20,528 to the Annual Fund, and the Class of 1989 has given £7,746 to the Annual Fund in class gifts, as well as a further £10,026 in major gifts and pledges.

‘LSE is a campus with a real buzz and energy. Coming back for the reunion gave me the chance to experience this again and to reconnect with old class mates – as well as meeting some new ones. I was very proud to be able to give back to LSE with the class gift. Supporting students and staff at the School has a real impact on campus and means that they get the same opportunities I had. Thank you to everyone that joined with us in making a gift.’ Martin Newson, Reunion Class Chair 1988-89

Thank you to all those who have contributed thus far. The reunion counting period for these classes lasts until 31 July 2009, so there is still time to contribute. We will publish the names of all donors who have made a class gift in next year’s annual report.

Staff and facultyLSE on top keeping LSE not only makes an impact on the lives of students, it can also be an immensely rewarding and unforgettable experience for members of staff, who have always played a fundamental role in the School’s continued success and commitment to educational excellence. Some members of staff also choose to support the School by making a financial contribution to the Annual Fund and this kind of institutional support can be vital in enabling the School to secure additional funds from other sources and foundations.

‘I remember many years ago a colleague smiling seraphically at an economics department meeting and saying, ‘Of course, we are all only here because of the rest of us’. By ‘we’ he meant both teachers and students – LSE is LSE because of the people. The Annual Fund is essential to nurturing the mix of people – to fund students from around the world, to improve teaching facilities, to support student societies, and to make improvements to the campus.’ Nicholas Barr, MSc Economics 1967, Professor of Public Economics, LSE

‘As an Annual Fund caller I really enjoy hearing about the experiences of alumni. They’re often amazed at how much has changed over the past few decades, but I’m always fascinated at how similar our experiences are! Speaking to alumni gives me a real sense of pride and reaffirms what I’ve always known: that LSE is a unique and inspiring place. I’ve loved my time here, and I know first hand how much impact the support of alumni makes to student life and the high standard of teaching and research LSE is rightly proud of.’ Dan Sheldon, Students’ Union Communications Officer, LSE

Annual Fund supporting businesses

‘Working in the Annual Fund is a great way to give back to the School and make a real difference for future generations of LSE students. The camaraderie is wonderful and I love being able to engage with alumni and hear how their LSE degree helped them thrive. The best job on campus is with the LSE Annual Fund!’

We are extremely grateful to our Supporting Businesses, who help our call room to be a fun, motivating environment by donating prizes such as gym passes, cinema tickets and book vouchers.

Maya Soble, MSc International Relations 2008

‘My favourite thing about working for the Annual Fund is the opportunity to speak with LSE alumni all over the globe. It’s great to hear about all the amazing things our alumni have gone on to do with their lives and where in the world they have ended up. Our donors are always excited to hear about what’s been happening at the School, and it’s great to know that the Annual Fund gives them a chance to stay connected with the School and contribute to its future. I look forward to joining the LSE alumni network and being in the company of so many accomplished people.’ Vincente Salazar, MSc Social and Public Communication 2008

‘I have thoroughly enjoyed working at the Annual Fund in the past year. There is a great sense of personal satisfaction when I walk around campus knowing that I, as part of the Annual Fund team, have made some contribution towards the development of LSE. I have come across very supportive alumni, but it has been an all round fantastic experience!’ Jerusha Kimani, BSc Government and Economics 2010

‘The Annual Fund is indeed a worthy cause and I feel most honoured to be part of it. Amongst the many causes the Fund provides for is financial aid; being the recipient of such an award myself I greatly appreciate the importance of such an initiative. Work at the office is challenging and engaging yet never lacking a sense of self-fulfilment.’ Ammar ul Alam, BSc Accounting 2010 14

‘This year the Annual Fund student callers have contacted alumni across the world. We’ve let you know about how your generous donations have benefited students and the School, along with the latest alumni services available to you. One of the most enjoyable aspects of working for the Annual Fund is listening to these conversations and appreciating the hard work that the students and alumni have put into making LSE such an incredible place for learning and ‘living’. I’d like to thank you not only for the donations, but also for giving your time and engaging with the student callers. I’m sure in the next few years they will look forward to receiving a call from the next generation of students! We look forward to talking with you again in the 2008-09 academic year.’ David Berridge, Annual Fund Caller Manager

Our goal is to increase alumni participation to the Annual Fund over the coming year. This will enable the Annual Fund to support more projects at the School and make a real difference to the student experience. Every gift really does make a difference. All gifts, regardless of country of origin, will be eligible for the match. For UK taxpayers, gift aid will also be matched.

There has never been a better time to support the Annual Fund at LSE. The UK Government has introduced a Matched Giving Scheme to match private donations to universities with public funds and encourage donors throughout the world to support UK higher education. Through this scheme LSE Annual

Fund donors are eligible for a 3:1 match on gifts to the Annual Fund until 31 July 2011. This means that every £3 you donate to the Annual Fund will be matched by £1 from the UK Government. Potentially this scheme could enable the Annual Fund to

Help us to reach our goal of doubling the number of donors to the Annual Fund over the next three years. Please continue to support LSE and renew your gift today! For further information about the Annual Fund and the Matched Giving Scheme please visit our website at www.lse.ac.uk/annualfund
