No grape variety is as reflective of climatic and site differences as Pinot Noir. This fickle grape demands a cool climate to thrive, and small distance differences in the valley often yield wines of distinctively different character. The protection afforded by the Cascade Mountains to the east, Coast Range to the west, and a series of lower hill chains to the extreme north make the lower hillsides of the Willamette Valley the ideal place to grow cool climate grapes. It is on these hillsides that these wines develop their distinctive attributes. In 2002, a collaborative group of vineyards and wineries submitted petitions to divide much of the northern part of the large Willamette Valley American Viticultural Area into more specific AVAs to better reflect how the subtle differences in growing location can greatly impact the characteristics of the fruit from vine to bottle. The high bidder of this impressive collection will take home a selection of magnums of Pinot Noir from the six Willamette Valley AVAs: Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge, and Yamhill-Carlton. Package includes 32 magnums of wine, each from a different winery, from six Willamette Valley AVAs: • Chehalem Mountains AVA: • One magnum of 2013 ArborBrook Vineyards Estate 777 Block Pinot Noir • One magnum of 2013 Bergström Silice Pinot Noir • One magnum of 2011 Redman Wines Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noir • One magnum of 2012 J.K. The Walla Walla valley is a beautiful oasis amid the vast sagebrush desert that rolls across most of America’s northwest interior. The name Walla Walla means “many waters,” and it highlights the rivers and aquifers that provide so abundantly for those who discover this place—from the earliest native peoples and French fur trappers, to Oregon Trail pioneers and Victorian wheat barons. For each wave of arrivals, the Walla Walla Valley presents a remarkable agricultural bounty. The local wine industry continues this rich legacy, and you can explore why as you visit this renowned winemaking region and charming town. Two couples will enjoy a relaxing three night stay in one of the beautifully renovated Waitsburg Cottages. These cozy cottages are completely furnished with two queen bedrooms, each with its own bath suite, and are stocked with morning basics, fresh flowers, an assortment of wines, and all the comforts of home—even a bag of carrots for a visit to feed Izzy, the adorable Waitsburg camel. Acclaimed wine writer Paul Gregutt will greet the group with a personally guided wine tasting where he will pour a selection of well-aged wines from top Walla Walla vintners from his extensive private cellar, and share his vast knowledge of local winemaking practices. Four of the most renowned wineries in the valley, many of which are not open to the public, including Doubleback, FIGGINS, Gramercy Cellars, and Leonetti Cellars, will also host the couples for private barrel tastings. In 1971, timber products executive and Oregon wine industry pioneer, C. Calvert “Cal” Knudsen, and his wife, Julia Lee, purchased a 200-acre former walnut orchard in the Dundee Hills for its potential as a vineyard site. Vineyard development commenced immediately. In 1975, Knudsen Vineyard had 60 acres planted, making it the largest vineyard in the Willamette Valley. Cal was the first vineyard owner in the Willamette Valley to plant grape vines at a large scale, and for many years, Knudsen Vineyard continued to be the largest producing premium grape vineyard in Oregon. Cal and pioneering Oregon winemaker, Dick Erath, formed the Knudsen Erath Winery partnership in 1975. The partnership received a permit to operate Oregon Bonded Winery No. 52 on the Knudsen Vineyard site, the first commercial winery in the Dundee Hills. For a decade thereafter, Dick produced award-winning Knudsen Erath Winery wines, primarily with grapes from both Knudsen and Erath vineyards. In 1987, Knudsen Vineyards entered into a long-term grape supply agreement with newly established Argyle Winery. Cal had always wanted to make an Oregon sparkling wine and realized his vision was shared by Rollin Soles, founding Argyle winemaker, and Rollin’s partners in the winery. Knudsen Vineyards has remained a prime supplier of the highest quality fruit to Argyle for their production of Sparkling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay wines. Over the years, Argyle has garnered more Top 100 scores in Wine Spectator for both still and sparkling wines, than any other winery in Oregon. Your group of four will receive exclusive access to this historic property as you stay for a long weekend at the private Knudsen family cabin built by Cal Knudsen in the early 70s. With sweeping panoramic views of the Dundee Hills, this comfortable bungalow sits just above the vines which produce Argyle’s renowned Blanc de Blancs. During your stay, you will embark on a tour of the historic Knudsen Vineyard followed by a gourmet picnic lunch on the deck hosted by Page Knudsen-Cowles, Cal Knudsen’s daughter, and accompanied by Knudsen Vineyards wines. Later that evening, a true wine country dinner at the iconic Tina’s restaurant in Dundee will be savored. The next day, a VIP tour and tasting at the spectacular new Argyle Tasting House will provide an overview of the award-winning still and sparkling wines Argyle produces, many from the grapes surrounding your weekend vineyard retreat. Before your Sunday departure, each person in your group will go home with a bottle of Knudsen Vineyards wine as a memento of your stay in this piece of Oregon wine history. Package notes: To be used on a mutually agreed upon date in 2016, excluding IPNC and ¡Salud! auction weekends. Please provide 60 days advance notice when scheduling your stay. Non-transferrable. Now off the drawing board, the long-anticipated James Beard public indoor market is set to open in 2018! Located in the very heart of Portland, the market will connect the city to the river and the region’s food to its citizens. The architect, internationally regarded Snøhetta, is known for award winning civic and cultural projects including the National Opera in Oslo, the redesign of Times Square, the Norwegian currency, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art expansion, along with that of The French Laundry’s kitchen. The two-story building will provide 88,000 square feet of stalls, restaurants, event space, a teaching kitchen, and more. A citizen task force, city officials, urban designers, and builders are furiously working to meet the opening date. James Beard Award winning cookbook author, Janie Hibler, invites your party of six to join her around the dinner table with a core group of market insiders. See the plans, meet the movers, and share the vision. You’ll indulge in a gourmet meal with expert wine pairings to suit the tastes of your fellow aficionados, while overlooking the expansive view of Portland from Janie’s spectacular West Hills dining room. Janie will include a tour of her cook’s dream kitchen and Gary Hibler will raid his well-stocked wine cellar. If you have an interest in the future of the already acclaimed Portland culinary scene, this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of the food movement that’s drawing international attention. Package notes: To be scheduled on a mutually agreed upon date before November 1, 2016. • James Beard Public Market insider’s dinner for six people with James Beard Award Winner Janie Hibler at her and Gary Hibler’s home in the West Hills of Portland Donated by Janie & Gary Hibler and The Ponzi Family
