The BBI Difference:

Philosophy and Instruction ELIMINATE: – Guesswork – Reliance on subjective "feel" – Reliance on memorization

Bicycle Mechanics is not an art. Whether tightening a bolt or making a bearing adjustment, we believe measurement quickly achieves consistent and accurate results. We strive to eliminate subjectivity in every way. This means that you don’t have to "get it," or have "a knack." We believe we are unique in this philosophy. Our commitment to help you learn after leaving the classroom is unmatched. By providing you with written materials in excess of the subject matter covered in class, and by providing you with detailed worksheets that guide you through all procedures down to the last detail, you will have us at your side for years after you take a BBI course.

Eliminate guesswork. Eliminate reliance on subjective “feel.” Eliminiate reliance on memorization.

INCOMPARABLE

PERSONAL ATTENTION Our class size is limited to 16 students – larger classes would enable us to boast about our total enrollment, but would you benefit? With no less than 2 instructors in the labs at any time, our 8:1 student/teacher ratio guarantees you a level of personal attention that can’t be matched!

CERTIFICATION & TESTING WITH REAL VALUE As long as we have been training mechanics, we have been testing mechanics. Although certification is new to the bike industry, it’s not at all new to us. In fact, we have been closely associated with every movement to initiate industrysanctioned certification since the mid 80’s. The original BBI Certification is now known as BSE Certification.

TOP INSTRUCTORS IN THE INDUSTRY All of BBI’s instructors are certified by the Colorado Department of Higher Education, Private Occupational School Board. Additionally, all of the instructors are BSE certified mechanics. Founder and director John Barnett has worked in the

He invents and manufactures tools for bicycle mechanics, consults with several bicycle tool companies about tool design, and designs and builds software for use in managing service departments. Mr. Barnett was also one of the founders of the BSE (a national mechanic certifying body). He has also worked as a team mechanic for a team in the Coors Classic (an international 10-day stage race). In addition to Mr. Barnett’s broad experience, the collective experience brought by current and prior instructors at BBI includes: • Experience working in more than 18 different bike shops

Beginning in 1980, Mr. Barnett was the first to offer independent bicycle-mechanic courses in the bicycle industry. In addition to his shop mechanic and service manager experience, Mr. Barnett writes the only technical manual for professional mechanics – Barnett’s Manual: Analysis And Procedures For Bicycle Mechanics, which has been in publication since 1989. He also has served as a columnist and associate editor for bicycle-industry consumer and trade periodicals.

• Team mechanic for the US National MTB Team for multiple World Championships • Teaching and organizing at USA Cycling’s race-mechanic licensing clinics

• Teaching consumer mechanic classes in bike shops • Organizer of the Women’s Mountain Bike Festival • Organizer of the WOMBATS Mountain Bike Festival • Consultant to a top-five bicycle manufacturer on women’s cycling • Columnist for Two-Wheeled Women (periodical) • Columnist for WOMBATS newsletter • Columnist for Bicycling Magazine • RockShox Test Lab Technician and Interim Test Lab Manager • Event organizer for the Bike Week Festival by Colorado Springs Metro Rides • Racing experience including MTB cross-country events, road races, single-speed races, and 24-hour MTB races

Quality Tools & Equipment Our graduates report a 99% satisfaction rating with the selection and condition of our tools.

TOP QUALITY

TOOLS BBI has invested the money to equip every bench with a full selection of the most expensive tools, such as milling tools, frame and fork alignment tools, specialized suspension tools, tension meters, digital calipers, and multiple torque wrenches. More importantly, BBI has an extremely close relationship with major tool manufacturers, and regularly consults with these manufacturers during their development of prototypes. Our students get a discount on tool purchases from United Bicycle Supply company. And when we don’t think anyone makes the right tool for the job, we produce it!

We are proud to receive tool support from Park Tool Company, J.A. Stein, United Bicycle Supply, and Shimano.

Great Program Choices OUTSTANDING

TECHNICAL PROGRAMS Bicycle Assembly & Maintenance (BAM) This forty-hour program provides skill training for the purpose of assembling and adjusting new bicycles, plus basic maintenance procedures that expands the suitability of this program to include those who do basic repairs in a shop, fleet maintenance, and home mechanics. This course is popular with professionals and enthusiasts alike, and is the place to start if you have little or no experience. If you want to achieve the highest level of training, take this program as a preparation for Bicycle Repair & Overhaul, which follows after a few-day break. Interested in wheel building? This course can be expanded by taking the Spoked Wheel Lacing (SWL) supplement.

Bicycle Repair & Overhaul (BRO) This eighty-hour program provides training in all the most common and advanced skills and knowledge of a bicycle mechanic, including frame preparation (milling and basic aligning), bearing service, drivetrain service, wheel building, wheel repair, brake service, component fit and compatibility, wear and failure analysis, and troubleshooting. This course is popular with professionals and enthusiasts alike, and is the place to start if you have more than a fix-your-own-flat level of bicycle mechanic experience.

Our committment to help you learn after leaving the classroom is unmatched.

Suspension Service & Tuning (SST) This three-day program fully acquaints the mechanic with service of a wide variety of current popular front and rear suspensions, and tuning techniques for all types of suspension systems. During the class you will have an opportunity to work on several models from each of the major manufacturers – Fox, Manitou, Marzocchi, and RockShox. Spring changes, travel changes, oil changes, damping-system service, seal service, and bushing service are all covered in this in-depth program, which is designed to bring you to the highest level of skill attainable for suspension-service specialists. Spoked Wheel Lacing (SWL) This program is a three-hour supplement to Bicycle Assembly & Maintenance that covers the skill of assembling a hub, spokes, and a rim into a wheel. Enrollment is limited to those taking the BAM program, and would not be of any value to anyone as a stand-alone program, because the information builds on topics included in the BAM program. Note: The material in this program is included in Bicycle Repair & Overhaul (BRO), so if you are enrolling in the BRO program by itself, or in the BAM and BRO courses together, this program is unnecessary except for the purpose of repetition.

Don’t Just Take It From Us LET OUR

GRADUATES TELL YOU "The Barnett experience was good for me. Thank you. I was just as interested in how you did what you did as in the content of instruction. I liked both. The Air Force is always deeply involved in technical education. For six of my 26 years, technical training was my line of work. I hope I don’t sound boastful when I say we were good at it. When I say you’re good, I measure against a high standard. You’re as good as the best I’ve seen. Here’s why: • You demonstrate your mastery of the field. • You spend the resources to stay current – ahead of the field. • You give candid appraisals of tools, methods, products. • Although tool and component manufacturers value your input, you’re patient with novices like me and with the (self proclaimed) experts who have nothing to learn from mere mortals. • You love bikes, tolerate bikers remarkably well, and love to share what you’ve learned. • Your instruction is excellent, written materials likewise; you make a natural transition to the hands-on stuff. • You are committed to continuous improvement. • You’re earnest, play no games, keep the objective in view, and press on.

"As I hope you could tell, the class clearly exceeded my expectations. I have been to a lot of training courses in my life and this was the most effective course I have ever taken, for a number of reasons.

Head Instructor at SRAM Technical University.

(The instructors) are obviously very bright, incredibly experienced in everything having to do with bicycles, good teachers, and very articulate public speakers. The manual is extremely well done and your ability to boil down each process into a clear set of procedures adds value far beyond just explaining what needs to be done. The manuals and the course are comprehensive and it is clear that you are keeping up with new developments in the bicycling world. Your use of measurements at every step of the way takes the guesswork out of each adjustment – and insures that I will get the same result every time I do an adjustment. The course is very logically organized. The educational process you use is based on reinforcing what we learn in a very effective way. The workbenches are fully equipped with all tools imaginable. The lab sessions are both efficient and effective because everything we needed was set up for us in advance and then put away for us when we were done – our time was spent only on doing what we were learning … our entire setup is optimized for efficient and effective learning…. … looked into BBI and UBI before deciding where to go. (I even visited UBI when I was in Ashland.) I had a feeling that BBI would be a better school and now I am sure I made the right choice…." James D. Kirsner, CPA Mill Valley, California
