The work station    

Must have a desk and all of your materials. Lots of space. Plenty of air. Keep it tidy!

 

Buy some files or cheap storage to help with organisation.

Split your area into two distinct functions – relaxation and revision. Put lap top, TV, phone pictures etc into relaxation zone. Music – but not too loud. Revise

Relax

The most optimum time for brain activity is around 35 - 50 minutes. Plan a ten minute break after this time. (Keep it to ten minutes!) Make a drink or have a snack – nothing too sugary though!

Breakfast 

   

It is the most important!

Cereal – low sugar/salt. Toast Fruit juice Porridge

  

School Dinners! Salads. Jacket potatoes. Five portions help your brain as well as your body!

Dinner

Steer clear of fatty, fried food. A proper evening meal will help your brain to tackle evening revision.

Sleep is more important than really late night cramming!

Aim for 8 hours a night. 

Allow some relaxation time. 

Go to bed at the same time every night.

Don’t have massive lie-ins at the weekend.

Don’t use electronic items in your bedroom – light significantly affects sleep.

Keep your bedroom dark, quiet and cool.

Avoid caffeine before bed (tea, coffee, chocolate, soft drinks).

Avoid alcohol and nicotine – proven to reduce your long term ability to sleep. Exercise regularly – but not just before bedtime. Establish a bedtime routine – bath, reading etc. Don’t eat just before going to bed.

Keep a note pad and pen by your bed. If you can’t sleep for thinking/worrying about things – write them down. Counting – count up to 10 and back – timing it with your breathing. GET UP – get a drink (water/milk), read something easy for pleasure – NOT a work book – listen to some relaxing music.

The ideal amount is at your discretion!

2 hours a night

5 to 6 hours a day but not in succession! Have a timetable and stick to it!

Start and end time.

1 - 3 hours at a time.

Most people are at their best in the morning.

Curriculum content will be completed by the Easter break. Lessons after this will be revision and recap.

Individual revision programmes taking into account ability to work without supervision, motivation and subject knowledge will be implemented. All classes will continue to run until their exams are completed. Some students will be asked to remain in these classes.

Don’t attempt to revise new content.

Light revision using notes.

Have all equipment ready.

Try to get a usual night’s sleep.

Get up in plenty of time.

Breakfast and liquids.

Don’t get there too early – this can increase nerves. Use flash cards for revising.

Morning examinations start at 09:00. Be in school for 08:45.

Afternoon examinations – usually 13.30.

Examinations in Hall and Gym, some in Room 47.

Be here for 15 minutes before the examination begins.

Clashes may occur.

Wear comfortable clothes.

Temperature regulation difficult.

Have at least  

   

two black pens two pencils rubber ruler calculator of necessary specialist equipment

We will be holding master classes with key points and instructions facilitated by specialist teaching staff before some key examinations. All will be invited – the programme will be issued to students and placed on the website.

Do

 Discuss

what the revision period will involve and how you can support it.  Provide a suitable environment.  Allow them to take over the house.  Help if they ask. If not right away then try to make some time.  Praise and encouragement. Stay clam.  Keep them well supplied with food and drinks.  Keep a low profile.  Contact school if you have a concern.

Don’t X X X X X X

Compare to brothers, sisters, friends etc. Constantly talk about examinations. Talk about how you did it! Worry if their techniques seem unusual. Have a battle over music. Expect them to study all of the time.
