Scholarships with April 2011 Deadlines

Scholarship information is listed below in order of deadline date. Applications and information are available in the Longview High School Senior Scholarship and Counseling Center on the second floor of the main building. Please note, however, that some applications are only available online through the scholarship donor’s website.

Longview Area Association of Realtors Scholarship The Longview Area Association of Realtors will award five $1,000 scholarships to area graduates who will pursue a degree from a college, university of technical institute in any field. An applicant must: • submit a completed application form; • write a one page essay on your career plans and include a brief explanation as to why you should be considered for the scholarship • provide one letter of recommendation from a teacher • provide one letter of personal recommendation form an adult other than a teacher • provide one copy of your complete high school transcript • may be required to sit for an oral interview with the scholarship committee; • be a resident served by the Longview Area Association of Realtors • enroll in and maintain a minimum course load of 12 semester hours during each semester for the first year of college. A receipt of enrollment in a minimum of twelve semester hours must be provided in order to receive the first installment of the scholarship funds; • maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA during each semester of the first year of college. Proof of semester grades and registration of at least twelve hours for the second semester must be provided in order to receive the second installment of the scholarship fund. Only the scholarship recipient will be notified and presented the award at the school’s senior awards ceremony. Return the scholarship application to Mrs. Ray to mail. Deadline is Friday, April 1, 2011.

The East Texas Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers The East Texas Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineering awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan on majoring in petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering or chemical engineering at an accredited four year university. Freshmen receive $500 per semester, upper classmen receive $1,000 per semester for a total of $7,000 given over four years. To remain eligible a student must maintain a 3.0 GPS and 30 hours of course work per year. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2011.

Longview Regional Medical Center Auxiliary Scholarship The Longview Regional Medical Center Fund was established for the purpose of providing financial assistance to eligible high school students who are pursuing a career in a medically related field of study and can demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Scholarships are in the amount of $500 with a maximum of four scholarships per student. All applicants must complete and submit the application, including • a high school transcript attesting a 3.0 GPA • a certified copy of ACT or SAT scores • a personal biography • three personal references returned in separate envelopes by person writing the reference. o Two school related and one community related personal reference. o Include address and phone numbers o No family members • enroll in a minimum of 12 hours per semester • submit application postmarked on or before Friday, April 1, 2011.

Gregg County Chapter of the Ex-Students’ Association of the University of Texas at Austin Scholarships The Gregg County Chapter of the Ex-Students’ Association of the University of Texas at Austin will award scholarships to selected Gregg County residents who will be incoming freshmen at the University of Texas at Austin in fall 2011. These scholarships funds are awarded by the local chapter are in addition to other scholarship programs maintained by the University of Texas at Austin. Applicants are ranked and the scholarships awarded according to academic standing (class rank, grade point average, SAT/ACT scores), extra-curricular activities and achievements and financial need. The ranking process is weighted in favor of academic achievement although the other factors are certainly considered and are of importance.

The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, April 1, 2011.

Cecile Moeschle Scholarship Trust for Longview High School and Pine Tree High School Seniors The Cecile Moeschle Scholarship Trust was created in accordance with the last will and testament of Longview philanthropist Cecile Moeschle who died June 17, 1982. She desired that deserving high school graduates have an opportunity to obtain a college education; therefore, this educational trust was created to provide financial assistance to worthy graduating senior at Longview High School and Pine Tree High School. Each application must include the following: • Completed application form • Photo attached to first page • Four (4) letters of recommendation • High school transcript • ACT/SAT scores included and verified • Application signed by applicant Applications must be returned to Mrs. Ray by Monday, April 4.

Bettina Gray Scholarship—Captain William Young Chapter of the DAR The Captain William Young Chapter of the Daughter of the American Revolution will award the Bettina Gray Scholarship to female seniors at Longview High School. Applicants must complete the scholarship application, write a one page essay about the question stated on the application, and provide two letters of references from teachers, counselors or principals. Deadline is Monday, April 4, 2011.

LHS Viewette Scholarship To be considered for one of the LHS Viewette Scholarships, an applicant must adhere to the following guidelines: • The applicant must be a graduating senior and a LHS Viewette. • The applicant must enroll in and maintain a minimum course load of 12 semester hours during either the fall/spring semester for the first year of college. The Scholarship Committee will need confirmation of enrollment. • The applicant must submit a scholarship application, accompanied by the following attachments, to receive consideration for the scholarship: an official

high school transcript and two letters of recommendation from a LISD teacher or administrator. Incomplete applications will not receive consideration. The scholarship application and all attachments must be returned to Mrs. Ray in the College and Career Center on or before Monday, April 4, 2011.

Junior Achievement of East Texas Scholarship To be considered for a scholarship under current selection procedures, a candidate should: • have completed, or will complete by spring graduation, a Junior Achievement High School program. • Be a high school senior who will be graduating at the conclusion of the current school year. • Be qualified, upon graduation, to enroll at an accredited two or four-year college or university. • Ensure that an application, accompanied by an attached transcript with current class ranking be received at junior Achievement, 911 NW loop 281, #211-16, Longview, Texas 75604 by April 15. • Attachments beyond the two-page application and transcript will be not accepted.

Longview Lions Club Annual Nursing Scholarship The Longview Lions Club Annual Nursing Scholarship is an annual award of $500, payable to Kilgore College or LeTourneau University on behalf of the student, for one academic year of study to pursue a nursing career, one the first day of classes. Successful students may reapply for this annual scholarship. The recipient of this scholarship must be either: • A student living in the Longview area accepted to a two or four year college or university or a vocational school, or • Enrolled in the first or second year of college Although not required for selection, family members of Lions will be given priority. Selection will be based on the following criteria: • Completion and submission of the attached application—deadline April 17, 2011 • A 200 word essay entitled, “Volunteerism and Its Importance in Today’s Society: • List all community and extracurricular activities, including after school work, that you were involved in during the past four years. • All candidates must be students in good standing for four years of high school, plus any college credits, which will be verified by the appropriate school officials. • List any special awards or achievements you have received. • Provide two written references from a teacher or organizational leader.



List family members who are members of a Lions Club. Lack of such a relationship does not disqualify application from selection.

Deadline is April 17, 2011.

Longview Lions Club Annie Louise Garmon Scholarship The Annie Louise Garmon scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 payable to the institution of higher education on behalf of the student, for one academic year of study, on the first day of classes. Successful students may reapply for this annual scholarship. The recipient of this scholarship must be either: • A student living in the Longview area accepted to a two or four year college or university or a vocational school, or • Enrolled in the first or second year of college Although not required for selection, family members of Lions will be given priority. Longview Tennis Association Scholarship Each year the Longview Tennis Association awards scholarships to graduating seniors who are involved in the tennis programs of Longview area schools. An applicant must: • submit a completed application form • write a one page essay on your career plans • submit two letters of recommendation from teachers who know you well Deadline is Friday, April 8, 2011.

2011 Ozarka Natural Spring Water $10,000 “Every Drop Counts” Earth Science Scholarship To be eligible for consideration, each candidate must submit: • a completed application • complete high school transcript and/or college transcript if applicable • completed essay • signed “General Rules and Guidelines’ document Selection Criteria: Candidates for the “Every Drop Counts” Earth Science scholarship must, through a combination of the completed application and the required supporting documentation, demonstrate to the satisfaction of the scholarship committee that they: • are a United States citizen and a Texas resident at the time of application • have a 3.0 or above grade point average • are currently pursuing or have plans to pursue higher education in the Earth/Environmental Sciences at an accredited four-year college or university (Examples of earth/environmental sciences are geology, hydrogeology, environmental science, environmental law, environmental education, forestry, oceanography, ecology) • are not employees or related to employees of Nestle Waters North American or Ozarka Natural Spring Water

Deadline is Friday, April 8, 2011. Must be postmarked by or on that date!

Aaron Burleson Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution The Aaron Burleson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will award one $500.00 scholarships to a graduating high school senior from the Longview, Texas area high schools (Longview High School, Pine Tree High School, Spring Hill High School, Trinity School of Texas and White Oak High School). This award is not open to children or grandchildren of member of the Daughters of the Revolution or Sons of the American Revolution. An applicant must: • be an American citizen. • submit a completed application form • submit high school transcript, • submit proof of ACT or SAT score • submit two letters of recommendation from instructors • submit a copy of birth certificate • complete a statement of career objectives—a 1,000 words or fewer essay stating career objectives and specifying how college relates to the applicant’s future goals and reasons for these choices.

Only the scholarship recipient will be notified and presented the award at the school’s senior awards ceremony. Deadline is Monday, April 11, 2011.

East Texas Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse's Elwanda Burgess Scholarship The East Texas Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse is proud to offer the Elwanda Burgess annual scholarship of $500. The recipient will be asked to attend ETCADA's Board of Directors' meeting at noon on May 19 where the recipient will read the winning essay. In order to apply, the recipient must: • attach to the completed application form a 300-750 word essay entitled "What I Have Learned About Drug Abuse and ETCASA." The essay should be typed and double-spaced. • Mail to ETCADA Scholarship, 708 Glencrest Lane, Longview, Texas 75601 • Applications postmarked after April 15, 2011 will not be considered. • Relatives of employees of the East Texas Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse are not eligible. Deadline is Friday, April 15, 2011.

Pilot Club of Longview, Inc. 2011 Scholarship The Pilot Club of Longview will award a scholarship in the amount of $500.00 to a deserving senior Anchor Club member. Deadline is Monday, April 18, 2011.

Country Patches Quilt Guild The Country Patches Quilt Guild is offering a $1000 scholarship for one semester only to be used for tuition and books. Applicants must: • have a great point average of B or above • have a strong interest in textile arts or other art/homemaking fields as exemplified by the student’s past involvement in scholastic and extra-curricular activities in these field • have references from two people who know this student well enough to furnish statements about the student’s character, academic potential, and community

involvement. These people may be school personnel, church friends, or others not related to the students. Deadline is Friday, April 15, 2011.

Deep East Texas A&M Mothers' Club 2011 Scholarship The Deep East Texas A&M Mothers' Club is offering two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors from Longview, Hallsville, Gladewater, Pine Tree, Kilgore, Sabine, Spring Hill, and White Oak. To be considered for the scholarship, the applicant must: • have accepted admittance to Texas A&M University at College Station • be planning to attend Texas A&M University in the fall 2011 • have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Selection will be based on the following criteria: • scholastic achievements and honors/awards • financial need • extracurricular, church, community and volunteer involvement • essay Required documents: • completed scholarship application form • official high school transcript • three letters of recommendation • copy of SAT and/or ACT scores (only if not included on official transcript) • essay Return all documents to Mrs. Ray on or before Friday, April 15.

Longview-Gregg County Retired Teachers Association The Longview-Gregg County Retired Teachers Association is offering a $250 scholarship for seniors who has a relative who is either a current or retired Texas public school employee (any position in a Texas public school, not just a teacher). Deadline is April 15, 2011.

The East Texas State Fair Scholarships

The East Texas State Fair is offering five different scholarships. They are: •

The East Texas State Fair Scholarship: $3,000 to attend Tyler Junior College in any field of study. Will offer scholarships up to ten students. Deadline is June 30. East Texas Farm and Ranch Scholarship: $1,000 to attend the college of your choice and major in any field. Will offer a scholarship to one student. Deadline is April 15. East Texas Cattle-Ettes: $1,000 to attend the college of your choice, but recipient must major in agriculture. Deadline is May 1. East Texas Pineywoods Cattlewomen: $500 to attend the college of your choice, but the recipient must major in agriculture. Will offer a scholarship to two students. Deadline is May 1. Texas Fairs and Event Education Foundation: $2,000 to attend the college of your choice and major in any field of study. Will offer ten scholarships. Deadline is April 15.

2011 Upshur Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation (URECC) Scholarship Program The Upshur Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation is offering several scholarships—two four-year $4,000 scholarships; two two-year $2,000 technical/vocational scholarships; and twenty $1,000 scholarships, payable $500 per semester. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of funds available and the applicants’ eligibility, academics, school and community involvement as well as financial need. Applicants must: • be a graduating high school senior whose parents/legal guardians are active members of Upshur Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation (URECC). An active member is defined as someone who is receiving electric service from URECC with the membership in the name of the parents/legal guardians. Ask your parents! • be a 2010 graduating senior; • provide a certified high school transcript with the application form; • have taken the ACT or SAT. Test scores must be on the official high school transcript and/or a copy of the official results attached to the scholarship application form. ACT or SAT scores are not required for the technical/vocational scholarship; • provide a copy of a photograph with the scholarship application form; • be of good character as evidenced by three letters of recommendation. Please submit two letters from a teacher, principal, counselor, etc. from your current school and one from a community member, pastor, or employer, etc. All letters must be signed and accompany the scholarship application form.

The recipient of the URECC scholarship award is expected to enroll as a full-time student no later than the fall semester immediately following his or her graduation from high school. URECC Director and/or employee family members are ineligible. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, April 15, 2011.

The Donnie Daniels, Jr. Memorial Scholarship The Donnie Daniels, Jr. Foundation will offer a $500.00 scholarship to a high school student. Applicants must: • complete an application; • provide three letters of reference, two from school employees and one community person; • attach a 300 word essay on the topic of your choice; • attach an official transcript; • and have a GPA of 3.0 or above. Deadline is Monday, April 18, 2011 to return the completed packet to the College and Career Center.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Epsilon Zeta Omega Chapter Scholarship This scholarship is available to graduating seniors in the Gladewater, Gilmer, Longview, Kilgore, and Henderson area. The scholarship is a one time award of $500. To be considered for this scholarship, students must complete a scholarship application. Applicants are considered based on academic excellence and leadership promise. Deadline is Wednesday, April 20, 2011.

Mike Politi Memorial Golf Scholarship The family of Mike Politi is proud to offer the Mike Politi Memorial Golf Scholarship to boys and girls who are currently on the school’s golf team. Applicants must: • be a member of the Class of 2011 • be a member of the Longview High School Golf Team, boys or girls team • complete an application • attach a letter of recommendation from the golf team coach • attach a letter of recommendation from one teacher who knows you well. • write a one page essay on your career plans, how college ties into those plans and why you should be considered for this scholarship. The family reports that each year students are disqualified because they return incomplete applications or miss the deadline. Please review the application before submitting or bring it to Mrs. Ray in the counseling department for review or ask your golf coach to review it. The deadline is no later than Saturday, April 30. Hearing Loss Association of Longview The Longview Chapter of hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) will award a $500 scholarship to a Greater East Texas area hard-of-hearing high school senior pursuing a college degree or vocational training. Recipients must have applied to a college or vocational education program, be between the ages of 17 and 20, have a 50-80dB loss, and wear a hearing aid(s) or cochlear implant(s). Financial need is not a consideration. Hearing Loss Association of America is a volunteer, international organization of hardof-hearing people, their relatives, and friends. It is a non-profit, non-sectarian

educational organization devoted to the welfare and interests of those who cannot hear well but are committed to participating in the hearing world. To apply for the scholarship, pick up an application, complete it and send it to Hearing Loss Association of America, Debra Myers, P. O. Box 4115, Longview, Texas 75606-4115.
