In July 2012, the PA DEP launched a one‐year ambient air monitoring project with an emphasis on characterizing near‐source concentrations of criteria and hazardous air pollutants from permanent facilities related to the Marcellus Shale gas industry in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
•
The data from the study will allow DEP to assess any potential long‐term impact of air emissions from unconventional natural gas operations in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Long‐Term Air Monitoring Project Sites Headings : White Text 40 pt. Calibri • Why these sites? • They are sites for permanent facilities, whereas well‐installation activities (drilling, fracking, etc.) are more short‐term activities, which don’t factor in chronic risk analysis. • Methane, nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emissions were detected during the PA DEP short‐term studies. • Complaints have been filed with the Southwest Regional Office concerning malodors and other issues. • The data collected will allow the PA DEP to assess any potential long‐term impact of air emissions from unconventional natural gas operations to nearby communities.
