Logo Usage Guide for OGP Partners 2015

OVERVIEW Open Government Partnership (OGP) encourages partners, including government points of contact, civil society leaders, funders and multi-lateral organizations, to adapt and use our visual identity (logo plus particular aspects of the logo such as the color bands) to celebrate their association with OGP and advance the cause of open government. At the same time, it is important to the integrity of our organization to maintain the consistency and professionalism of our brand. Guidelines on modification of our visual identity are critical. The following pages will detail how the OGP visual identity should be adapted and used, stressing the need for consistency in sizing, fonts, colors, and other elements of the logo. We have provided several examples of OGP logo variations that we consider acceptable and unacceptable. Taken as a whole, this document provides a set of brand guidelines that should serve as a tool for partners in the development of all print, digital, and event communications. SECTION 1: Our Brand This section provides an overview of basic elements that are core to the Open Government Partnership’s culture and reputation. What is a brand? In an organization such as OGP, a brand is the impression that partners, funders, beneficiaries, and related groups have of the organization. It’s the way people think, feel, and respond when they hear Open Government Partnership or OGP. Having a well-defined brand helps us create stronger connections with important stakeholders. Foundation of the brand Many elements help convey and reinforce an organization’s brand. Its vision, mission, and personality traits provide the foundation, capturing the core elements of the organization’s work and goals. The standards set forth in this document govern only the logo, when it can be used, and its various elements, such as fonts and colors.

Name Written communications should refer to our name as: Open Government Partnership Please note: - The first letter in all three words “Open, Government, Partnership” should be capitalized. - “Open Government Partnership” may be referred to as the acronym “OGP” after first use of our full name. - In all formal publications, a copyright line should be used that refers to “Open Government Partnership”. For example, “Copyright © 2015, Open Government Partnership.”

Format The Open Government Partnership logo has been specially designed and formatted in several different versions and should only be reproduced from approved electronic master artwork. To protect the legibility of the logo, a clear area (x height) should be left around it. No other text or image should be placed within this area.

Sizing In re-sizing the logo, the exact proportions must be preserved. Do not make the logo so small that it then becomes unrecognizable or that the name “Open Government Partnership” can not be easily read. Minimum size for printed material (brochures, letterhead, packaging):

SECTION 3: Logo Use

Usage The OGP logo may be used by a range of partners including: • Domestic reformers in participating countries • Civil society organizations and coalitions • OGP working groups • Partner organizations such as funders, multilateral organizations, and campaign or consortium networks. These organizations are encouraged to use the OGP logo in print or online communications directly related to OGP initiatives. Examples of such initiatives include: • National Action Plans • Government Self-Assessments • Launch events of OGP publications • Peer exchange events with other countries/partners • OGP official regional or global meetings   The OGP Support Unit should be informed of intent to use the OGP logo at least one month in advance of any publication or event. Third parties should be clear that using the OGP logo does not imply automatic OGP endorsement. Any party using the OGP logo should adhere to the guidelines about border areas, sizing, colors, and fonts explained in the following pages.

Use in Events OGP permits our name and logo to be used in co-hosted events (on promotional materials, signage, banners, etc.) only with approval from the OGP Support Unit at least one month in advance of the event.

Right to Fair Use If use of the OGP name or logo is recognized as “fair use,” it is not necessary to request permission in order to use the OGP name or logo. Examples of “fair use” include: • academic research • educational purposes • news/current affairs The use of the OGP name and logo in a “fair use” context does not imply automatic endorsement by OGP. Drafts of publications or materials that use the OGP name and/or logo under fair use should be submitted to the OGP Support Unit either by mail to 1110 Vermont Ave NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20005, or by e-mail to communications@opengovpartnership. org at least one month before release of publication.

SECTION 4: Colors Primary Color Palette The preferred method of reproducing the Open Government Partnership logo is to use only a supplied RGB and/or CMYK version. The colors in the logo make up the full color palette. The supporting primary palette is below and should be used whenever possible across all printed materials. Process Blue

Secondary Color Palette for Background Use We recognize the occasional need for more colors in our materials beyond OGP’s primary colors. SECTION 5: Fonts Fonts The Open Government Partnership logo font is a variation of Gill Sans MT. This is for informational purposes only, as the primary logo should never be re-typeset. You should only use the provided logo files. The primary font to use for all printed communication is Gill Sans and/or Open Sans. •Gill Sans (light, regular and bold)

Acceptable Variations The logo should only appear in Open Government Partnership’s specified colors. Graphic devices, such as outlines, drop shadows, etc., should not be applied to the logotype. The following are examples of acceptable adaptions of the logo:

Unacceptable Logo Variations Used correctly, the Open Government Partnership logo helps to convey the professionalism of our organization. With that in mind, here are some examples of ways NOT to use our logo:

SECTION 6: Examples of Adapted Logo Country-specific Logos Using these guidelines, any OGP member country is encouraged to use and customize our logo to advance the cause of open government with their domestic audiences. Points of contact in countries that want to use the OGP logo should contact the OGP Support Unit at least one month before use. The preferred method of customization of the logo is for the country name to be set in Gil Sans bold below the words “Open Government Partnership.” Other variations with a country’s language are also acceptable.

SECTION 7: Examples of Adapted Color Bands

Branded Material Further branding can be done with OGP’s color bands. Government points of contact, civil society leaders, and other external audiences associated with OGP are encouraged to adapt our color bands for use in connection with events, reports, and other products. The color bands should be consistent with the amount, size and proportions of the logo and should compliment any other visual elements used. Color bands can also be used creatively as long as the OGP logo is present and not modified.

A Final Word Open Government Partnership encourages government points of contact, civil society leaders, and other external parties associated with OGP to appropriately use and adapt our visual identity to advance the cause of open government. We hold our branding standards in the highest regard and request that these guidelines be employed to maintain brand consistency and professionalism. We hope that you find these guidelines to be a useful tool in communicating about OGP and our collective work to make governments more open, transparent and accountable.
