COMUNA PUNTA ARENAS País: Chile Región: Magallanes y Antártica Chilena Provincia: Magallanes Centro urbano situado a orillas del Estrecho de Magallanes, en la península de Brunswick, a 53º 08’ grados latitud sur y 70º 55’ grados longitud oeste. Punta Arenas es la capital de la región de Magallanes y a su vez capital de la Patagonia chilena, llamada antiguamente Punta Arenosa y “Sandy Point” por John Byron (en inglés), durante su recorrido por este pequeño y lejano paraje en el siglo XVII . La ciudad fue fundada en 1848, y se convirtió en el principal eje del desarrollo comercial, cultural y social de todo el territorio magallánico. Aquí puede realizar excursiones hacia los principales atractivos turísticos de la región. Los recursos son en su mayoría bellezas naturales que pueden ser visitadas por tierra, mar y aire. Existe una variada gama en la oferta de las agencias de viajes locales ya sean tours programados para grupos o servicios privados. Es posible recorrer gran parte de la región mediante los caminos visitando lugares como el Seno Otway, de gran atracción turística y científica, donde se ubica una colonia de pinguinos, o continuar por el camino hacia el sector de Río Verde y Seno Skyring ideal para los amantes de la pesca deportiva. Al recorrer los caminos regionales en general es posible observar una variada fauna, con aves como: el ñandú, el cóndor, el cisne y el flamenco. Magallanes es una zona rural de bellos paisajes que ofrece también agroturismo. Al sur de Punta Arenas la carretera baja el litoral central de la península de Brunswick en la ruta histórica por excelencia, por mar o por tierra pasaron alguna vez descubridores y conquistadores, indígenas, colonos y pioneros. La ruta actual conduce a sitios históricos como Fuerte Bulnes y Puerto del Hambre.

This is a County located in the Province of Ultima Esperanza, Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region. Its capital is Cerro Castillo Village. It has a superficies of 6.630 Km2, including Torres del Paine National Park. Its population is 800 people. El Calafate is one of the three more important cities of the Province of Santa Cruz, access to The Glaciers National Park, located 80 km from Perito Moreno Glacier at the foothill of Calafate Mount and settled on Redonda Bay.

Habitada en sus comienzos por los Aonikenk y actualmente una pintoresca ciudad que ofrece todos los servicios que un visitante puede requerir y lo mejor es que está rodeada de un magnífico entorno Natural.

This was inhabited at the beginning by Aonikenk people, nowadays it is a picturesque city that offers all the services that a visitor may need and it is surrounded by a magnificent natural landscape.

Ubicada en la costa del canal Beagle, esta hermosa ciudad se encuentra rodeadas por la cadena montañosa del Martial, lo que hace un entorno maravilloso que es digno de fotografiar, contemplar y estampar como un inolvidable recuerdo.

This is the capital city of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctic and Islands of the South Atlantic, it is also known as one of the southern most cities in the world, same as some neighbor Chilean cities. It is located on the coast of Beagle Channel and surrounded by Martial Mountain Range, which provides a wonderful area to take pictures, contemplate and get as an unforgettable memory.

Sus primeros pobladores fueron los cazadores y recolectores de los cuales surgieron los Selknam y Haus, también Yámanas y Kawesqar quienes llegaron desde los archipiélagos occidentales, los cuales fueron dejando su rastro, los que actualmente podemos encontrar en museos de la ciudad, algunos de ellos; Museo del Fin del Mundo, Museo Yámana, Museo Acatushun – Estancia Harberton. También los visitantes pueden navegar en el canal Beagle, o realizar excursiones por los senderos del Parque nacional, sobrevolar los glaciares u otras alternativas según la época que visiten esta ciudad.

Creado el año 2002 por un grupo de artesanos de la ciudad, Junto con el apoyo de la Ilustre Municipalidad de Puerto Natales, en la actualidad el Pueblo Etherh Aike, ofrece productos elaborados, exclusivamente, por los artesanos locales, destacando la cultura de los pueblos originarios de la Zona, la flora y fauna autóctona y el entorno natural del paisaje de la región. Los objetos más representativos de su trabajo lo construyen los tejidos en lana de oveja, usando para esto técnica de palillo, telar y fieltro teñido en forma manual. También se puede encontrar diseño en talabartería, cerámica, orfebrería y tallado en madera Nativa.

PROFESSOR ALFREDO SOTO OUTDOORS EDUCATOR El Ferry “Bahía Azul” de la Compañía Marítima Austral Broom, era sometido a las negociaciones en su conducción, por un lado su joven capitán evaluaba el posible desembarco en un lugar que no era de mi gusto, tanto así que le insinué que el se preocupara de la situación del desembarco y yo de la posibilidad de encaramarme por las laderas de extensos precipicios que protegían los contrafuertes del enorme Glaciar Italia. Fueron varias las opciones descartadas por el hábil navegante en lo que respecta a su aproximación a la costa mientras tanto yo descartaba otras por la inclinación de las laderas sin tener alguna posibilidad de armar campamento alguno. De pronto nos queda la ultima posibilidad ya que el viento y marejada arreciaba y se pronunciaba en forma hostil para nuestros propósitos….la ultima alternativa se pudo concretar, era segura para el navegante del Ferry y adecuada para los que quedaríamos en tierra. La emoción de estar nuevamente en la Cordillera Darwin se hacia ver en nuestros rostros, meses previos de trabajos administrativos y poca montaña ahora toda esta banda de nieve, roca y hielo estaba frente a nosotros. Como ocultando los signos del alivio de ya estar en el lugar elegido se comienzan a recordar instrucciones ya dadas previamente en la navegación. Víctor y Natalia sacarían la alimentación y el equipo necesario para pasar la noche, mientras Nelson, Rodrigo y yo buscaríamos el mejor lugar para acampar. La lluvia intensa nos obli-

gaba a buscar rápidamente donde establecernos a descansar. Todo el Cerro era de turba e incluso en pendiente lo que nos hacia pensar que con lluvia o sin ella era lo mismo instalar el campamento en cualquier lugar. Elegido a 200 metros de altitud de la Costa establecemos nuestro campamento, Víctor y Natalia ya venían con lo solicitado y rápidamente nos refugiamos. ( Té de Canela) Al día siguiente, continua la lluvia y el viento, pero debemos portear nuestros equipos a un lugar adecuado y al alcance de los próximos campamentos, al mismo tiempo realizaremos una exploración buscando el paso al Glaciar Italia y por supuesto a la vista de nuestro objetivo principal la cumbre Sur del Monte Italia hasta ahora inmaculada, blanca e inescalada. Entre turbas y pequeños morros vamos ganándole a la altura percibiendo la gran cantidad de vetas de cuarzo, algunos tramos con nieve endurecida permitían avanzar de mejor manera y rápidos. En este día alcanzamos hasta la cota 700 metros y “boquiabiertos” veíamos en toda su magnitud el caos orográfico de un gran vació entre las laderas sur del Monte Italia, un Glaciar por el Oeste que erróneamente sale en las cartas marítimas como Glaciar Francés y al Este el Magnifico y afamado Glaciar Italia que cae directamente al Canal Beagle en innumerables y vertiginosas moles de hielo. Como empotrado en el fondo y por el colorido del día parecía un dibujo de carboncillo la imponente figura del Monte Francés (2.150 m.s.n.m.). La inspección visual se centra en la escalada mental del Monte Italia. Debemos en el futuro y cuando decidamos asumir el Monte Italia cruzar un collado hacia los márgenes occidentales del Glaciar Italia , luego hacer una travesía hasta llegar a lo que denominamos “El Hombro del Italia” y allí enfrentar la pared Este del mismo la que no estaba a nuestra vista. Un poco de viento nos avisa que ya es hora de regresar, y buscar el sitio para el futuro campamento 2 y dejar lo que mas podemos de equipo innecesario en la costa. Al retornar el viento se presenta mas fuerte y ya en nuestro campo 1 aprovechamos de secar lo que mas podamos pero atentos ya que las nubes del fondo occidental del Canal Beagle nos indica que se viene la lluvia nuevamente. La primera noche sobre la turba nos hace reflexionar e intercambiar opiniones acerca de las propiedades calóricas de la Turba ya que a pesar de la humedad sentimos nuestros pisos temperados y sin ser invadidos por el agua. ……Ventisca por el día y lluvia por la noche fue nuestro primer día de tormenta, esperaremos y dormiremos y comeremos y….. (Té de Naranja)…… segundo día de tormenta …..Campamento anegado…debajo de nosotros escuchamos el agua como se escurre por las piedras pero nuestra plataforma no se ha desmoronado…debemos abrir canaletas para que escurra el agua libremente… (Té de Eart Grey) por la noche los vientos mas fuertes …percibimos chorros de hasta 110 Kilómetros de velocidad…dormimos vigilantes de la carpa yo de las 00:00 hasta las 03:00 y luego mi compañero Victor Nuñez desde las 03:00 hasta las 06:00 horas….Tercer día de tormenta se levanta un fuerte vendaval de viento blanco…se va el agua pero regresa el hielo y la nieve….la temperatura baja considerablemente…debemos palear y reconstruir nuestros muros para la carpa…cada cierto tiempo revisamos nuestro campamento….los chorros de viento no bajan de 50 nudos y se intensifican siempre en la noche….en el interior de la carpa podemos percibir como nuestra ansiada luna se cubre y descubre con el vertiginoso pasar de las nubes….ella juega con nosotros…. yo estoy enfadado con ella….(Té de Canela) Nuestro cuarto día de tormenta sigue nevando y seguimos paleando….por la tarde reúno a mis alumnos y evaluamos situación anímica, alimentación, temores, probabilidades y decisiones. Esperamos informe detallado del tiempo atmosférico de Faro Yamana reforzado con indicaciones de la Dirección Aeronautica desde el Aeropuerto de Puerto Williams….pronostico : nublado… rachas de viento entre 35 y 25 nudos sin precipitaciones….. se perfila buen tiempo….Ok…muchachos mañana es el día, a dormir temprano. ( Té de Manzana). Nuestra levantada se agiliza pero se desmorona la intención del intento, no hay viento y esta nublado. La tarea del día prepararse para hacer una exploración en el margen Oeste del Glaciar Italia en su vertiginosa caída al Canal Beagle. Mientras nos equipamos también estoy atento a las condiciones y se mantiene muy nublado y oscuro el lado Oeste pero frente a nosotros entre el Italia y el Francés las nubes danzan libremen-

te llevadas por tenues brisas….mientras nos equipamos les grito a estos jóvenes exploradores de la Tierra del Fuego que ha llegado la hora para ir hacia el “Hombro del Italia” y partimos en una hora estábamos en el Collado entre el “Mirador Joshiken” y el Glaciar Italia que se encumbra hacia la catedral de blanco de la cima Sur del Italia. Desde allí avisamos a Faro Yamana de nuestra intenciones y que no se preocupe por si no lo llamamos ya que estaremos ocupados en nuestras tareas sobre el hielo. Nos calzamos los crampones, nos encordamos los cinco de No 1 va Rodrigo, le sigue Nelson, en el medio va Natalia, continua Víctor y yo cierro este carro lleno de ilusiones. Comenzamos a enfrentar los primeros acarreos aledaños al Glaciar Italia, después de una hora mas, ya estamos sobre el Glaciar y avanzamos rápidos, cruzamos el tramo en donde se veía vestigios de derrumbes de piedras desde lo alto de la cima….con cuidado hacemos un largo través pensando en que si zigzagueamos podríamos provocar una avalancha de placa , ya había visto en montañas cercanas en sus laderas, grandes superficies de avalanchas de placa ,cosa que se percibe solo en la Antártica , esto me recuerda que el frío es intenso y nos abrigamos lo suficiente para evitar se minados por este factor….en ese instante comentamos con Víctor que tenemos frió en los Pies, pero no le hacemos mucho caso ….estamos emocionados de la manera que progresamos sobre el Glaciar, compacto y firme….de pronto la cordada se detiene ya casi llegando al “hombro” vemos adelante a Rodrigo en el suelo y nos hace seña….todos tensamos la cuerda y Natalia asegura a Nelson quien se acerca para ayudar a Rodrigo…este esta metido en un Grieta y no se podía mover quedando sus crampones atascados en los bordes de la grieta…después de unos minutos logra zafarse y continuamos….veo que Rodrigo después de ver las fauces de la grieta se inquieta y comienza a tantear con el Piolet posibles falsos puentes y hendiduras . A medida que avanzamos se nos va aclarando el panorama de la Cara Este del Monte Italia con sus dos cuernos, el Monte Francés ahora ya nos queda en las espaldas. Desde aquí veo en forma magnifica la figura cónica del Monte Bove y el enmarañado de pendientes y glaciares colgantes del Monte Roncagli. Sin detenernos

para evaluar lo que vemos y ya habiendo superado el “Hombro” vamos con fuerza e intencionado en subir a la cumbre a como de lugar….de pronto se aparece una espesa niebla que nos cubre y hiela , sentimos nuestras ropas duras…. nuestras mochilas como monturas…los sierres no se abrían ni se cerraban….las barbas y bigotes llena de carámbanos de hielo pegada a los “pasamontañas”…esto se esta colocando muy helado….esto lo he visto solo con -30 grados de temperatura por suerte no hay viento sino quedaríamos con la marcha congelada . Nos aproximamos a nuestro gran obstáculo visto en fotografías y ahora la enfrentamos de verdad una gran rimaya a la que había que buscarle el lado débil, pero no se ve….no se ve porque la noche se ha apresurado y la oportunidad que le había dado a la luna para nuestra reconcialición de noches pasadas en la que escuchaba reírse de nuestro encierro en las carpas nuevamente nos negaba su ayuda…¡¡¡¡no esta en ninguna parte!!!!....Se colocan las estacas para asegurar a Rodrigo, el resto se apresta a cualquier caída….mas abajo se ven abiertas algunas grietas y percibimos que todo se torna lento….mis pies ya no lo siento…¿estaré en el limite para soportar el frió?....nadie mas se ha quejado…esperamos el lento avance de Rodrigo buscando por donde mejor pasar y de pronto….¡¡¡¡me lleno de angustia….veo como Rodrigo no se alcanza a sostener y se desliza por la pared en una suerte de péndulo arrastrándose unos 20 metros mas abajo….los seguros funcionaron bien….ya no hay mas luz que las lámparas y algunas estrellas que hacían el esfuerzo para “ayudar”…..Pregunto a gritos…¿Cómo estas?.....¿te sientes bien?....Rodrigo se incorpora pero no dice nada….al parecer siente frió en las manos a pesar de los guantes. Quiero seguir en esta lucha, estamos muy cerca….pero viene la sumatoria de hechos y que la experiencia me indica que no continúe….mañana es otro día y ya sabemos como es la cara Este del Cerro…..¡¡¡OK….muchachos….eso sería todo por hoy vamos de regreso!!!!....nadie discutió ni emitió opinión alguna….sacar los anclajes y

de regreso!!!!!....como si cada uno de estos aventureros del hielo ya habían realizado la sumatoria de los acontecimientos:…… salida Tarde…..cordada de 5 (lenta)….atascamiento de Rodrigo en la Grieta……se nos viene la noche…..nos cubre una niebla helada………pies helados……rimaya enorme…..y caída de Rodrigo….creo que esta demás algún comentario para tratar de buscar los limites…no es necesario…. mañana podremos volver y con alguna estrategia diferente. La bajada se hace eterna….sobre el Glaciar y con las lámparas encendidas pareceríamos fugaces estrellas en cámara lenta. Casi sin habla retornamos…..el silencio se hacia notar y mas sin la presencia de viento. El hielo cristal sobre las piedras hizo mella con Natalia que antes de advertirle ya estaba en el suelo y por varias veces. 21:30 horas nos fundimos en un abrazo fraterno por la experiencia del día…..Con Víctor nos revisamos los pies y están insensibles….rápidos primeros auxilios y no reaccionan. Víctor los tiene Morados todos los dedos de ambos pies y yo solo los del Pie Izquierdo…aplicamos calor con agua tibia y temperamos nuestra carpa….pasan dos horas y nuestros pies siguen rígidos y sin responder a los estímulos apropiados…..Nos reunimos todos en nuestra carpa y hacemos un llamado a Faro Yamana para que nos contribuyan con algunas sugerencias para enriquecer los primeros auxilios….recibimos algunas recomendaciones pero a la medianoche ya sin respuesta alguna de nuestros pies solicitamos aplicar el protocolo diseñado con la armada para evacuar del lugar al menos los afectados por las quemaduras de frió. Salimos en la noche a las 01:30 de la Madrugada y a cada hora comunicados por radio para enlazar con la Patrullera de la Armada que salio de inmediato y que se demoraría unas 4 horas desde Puerto Williams hasta nuestro lugar de embarque.¡¡¡¡¡ahora salió la luna…resplandeciente y guía para nuestra marcha nocturna….cumpliendo para ser reivindicada de su loca presencia en los días de tormenta!!!!!. En la bajada pudimos comprobar que el campamento Ferrino continuaba de pie…siempre tuvimos nuestras aprehensiones de que estaría en su lugar o no por los vientos de noches pasadas . Exactamente a las 04:30 horas nos despedíamos de nuestros compañeros que no me dejaban de preocupar ya que la instrucción era esperar la luz del alba para dedicarse a bajar el Campamento 2…desarmar y portear el campamento Ferrino…por lo tanto significaba hacer un vivac en el bosque cercano a la playa. El resto de los acontecimientos nos demostraron que nuestras decisiones fueron las correctas, fuimos atendidos en la Patrullera “Hallef” de la Armada de Chile (no hubo Te pero si un rico Consomé) y a las 08:30 horas en el hospital de Puerto Williams…y al mediodía evacuados hacia Punta Arenas en un avión de la Fuerza Aérea de Chile. Durante el vuelo y en la trayectoria del Valle Lapataia pude asumir visualmente los innumerables Glaciares que caen en la vertiente Norte de la Cordillera Fueguina, haciendo memoria reconozco algunos tales como el Glaciar Stoppani, Glaciar la Viuda, Glaciar Cuevas, Glaciar Darwin y el Glaciar Marinelli uno de los mas grandes y por sobre el Monte Bukland mi amiga la luna…esta vez esta seria y dormida enternecida por los débiles rayos del Sol que la cubren. De día el Sol y de Noche la Luna recorren sagradamente el santuario de “Joshiken” …..Donde florece la Nieve…..

In mount Italia (Andes Fueguinos – Chile)

PROFESSOR ALFREDO SOTO OUTDOORS EDUCATOR The “Bahia Azul” Ferry of the Austral Maritime Company Broom, was subjected to negotiations during its driving, on one side, its young captain was evaluating its disembarking on a place that I didn`t like, so I suggested him to worry about the disembark and I would worry about climbing the hillsides of extended cliffs protecting the buttress of the huge Italia Glacier. Many options were discarded by the skillful sailor respect to the approach to the coast; while I was discarding other options due to the inclination of the hillsides without having the chance to broke camp. Suddenly, we had the last chance because the wind and the rough water was intensified and it pronounced in an hostile way for our purposes…the last chance could be reached, it was safe for the sailor of the ferry and adequate for those who would stay on land. The emotion of being again in the Darwin Range could be seen in our eyes. Previous months of administrative work and very short times in the mountain….now, all this band of snow, rock and ice was in front of us. As if it was hiding the signs of the relief of already being in the chosen place; we started to remember the instructions previously given on the sailing. Victor and Natalia would be in charge of the necessary food and equipment to spend the night, while Nelson, Rodrigo and I would look for the best place to camp. The intense rain forced us to look quickly for a place to set and rest. The whole mountain was turf, even in a slope; so this made us to think that with or without rain it made no difference where to camp. We chose a place at 200 meters high from the coast, set our tents, Victor and Natalia already came with the stuff and we protected ourselves. (Cinnamon Tea). The next day, the rain and the wind go on, but we must carry our equipments to an adequate place and close to the next camps, at the same time, we will make an exploration looking for a route to Italia Glacier, and of course, with a view of our main objective: the south top of Mount Italia, immaculate until now; white and non-climbed. Among turfs and small hills we go on over passing the altitude and perceiving the big amount of quartz seams, some areas with hardened snow allowed us to go on better and faster. This day, we reached the level of 700 meters and “open-mouthed” we saw in all its magnitude the orographic chaos of a huge space among the south sides of the Italia Mount, a Glacier on the West, that appears mistakenly as French Glacier on the maritime charts, and to the East, the magnificent and famous Italia Glacier falling directly to the Canal Beagle in uncountable and vertiginous masses of ice. As if it was set in the bottom and due to the colorful day, the impressive figure of the French Mount (2.150 meters) seemed a charcoal drawing. The visual inspection focused on the mental climbing of the Italia Mount. In the future and when we decide to assume the Italia

……Blizzard during the day and rain at night; this was our first storm day, we will wait, sleep and eat… (Orange Tea)…… second storm day…Flooded camp…under us, we heard the water running through the rocks but our platform hasn`t been collapsed…we must open channels to leave the water flow freely…(Eart Grey Tea). At night, the strongest winds….e could feel gusts of even 110 Kilometers …we slept alert by shifts: I slept from midnight to 3 am, then my companion Victor Nuñez slept from 3 to 6…Third storm day…There is a strong white wind gale…the water leaves but the ice and the snow come back…temperature goes down considerably, so we must dig and rebuild our walls for the tent…every once in a while, we check our camp….the wind gusts aren`t slower than 50 knots and always get worst at night ….in the tent, we may feel how our moon gets covered and uncovered by the clouds….she plays with us….I am upset with her….(Cinnamon Tea). Our fourth storm day is still snowing and we are still digging ….in the afternoon, I meet my students and we evaluate the mood, food, fears, probabilities and decisions. We wait for a detailed atmospheric weather forecast from Yamana Lighthouse reinforced with indications of the Aeronautical Direction from the Airport of Puerto Williams… prognostic : cloudy…wind gusts between 35 and 25 knots without precipitations…..it seems to come good weather….Ok…fellows, tomorrow is the day, so go to sleep. (Apple Tea). Our get up gets faster but the intention of the try falls, there is no wind and it`s cloudy. The task of the day is to get ready to explore the West border of the Italia Glacier in its vertiginous fall to the Beagle Channel. While we get ready, I am also alert to the weather conditions and the West side is still cloudy and dark but in front of us between the Italia and The French, the clouds dance freely taken by smooth breezes…while we get

“JOSHIKEN” WINTER EXPEDITION

Mount, cross a mountain pass to the West limits of the Italia Glacier; then, do a journey to reach what we call “The Shoulder of the Italia” and there, face the East wall of it, which we couldn’t see. A bit of wind alert us and we know it’s time to go back and look for a place for the future camp 2, and leave the most of the unnecessary equipment in the coast. When going back, the wind became stronger and already in our camp 1, we tried to dry all what we could, but we were alert because the clouds at the west bottom of the Beagle Channel announced us that the rain was coming again. The first night on the turf makes us to think and change opinions about the caloric properties of the turf; because in spite of the humidity, we felt our own grounds warmed and without being invaded by water. (Apple Tea).

equipped, I tell these Young explorers from Tierra del Fuego, that it`s time to go to the “Shoulder of the Italia”. So, we went and in an hour we were in the Collado between the “Mirador Joshiken” and the Italia Glacier rising to the white cathedral of the South top of the Italia. From there, we saw the Yamana Lighthouse, and don`t worry if we don`t call you but we will be busy walking on the ice. We put the crampons, we roped ourselves the 5 of us; number 1 was Rodrigo, followed by Nelson, in the middle Natalia, then Victor and I closed this lorry full of illusions. We started to face the first transportation zones close to the Italia Glacier. One hour later, we were on the Glacier and go on fast, crossed the area where there were rests of rock falls from the top…carefully, we go on straight thinking that if we went on in a zigzag, we could cause an avalanche of the plate . I had already seen on the sides of close mountains, big superficies of avalanches of plate, a thing that is only perceived in Antarctica. This reminds me that the cold is intense and we wrapped ourselves up enough to avoid to be diminished by this factor…in that moment, Victor and I commented that our feet were cold, but we didn`t care much about it ….we are so excited due to the way we progress son the compacted and strong Glacier… the roped team stops almost arriving to “The Shoulder”…Rodrigo was on the ground and tried to say something…we all stretched the rope and Natalia assures Nelson who went to help Rodrigo, who is in a crack and cannot move because his crampons get trapped in the sides of the crack… after a while, he could get out and we went on…I saw that Rodrigo got worried and started to inspect with the ice ax the possible false bridges and fissures. As w ego on, we start seeing the East side of Italia Mount with its two horns; the French Mount is back now. From here, I see in a magnificent way the conic shape of Mount Roncagli. We didn`t stop to evaluate what we see and as we over passed “The Shoulder”, we go on stronger and trying to climb to the top anyway… suddenly, a thick mist covers and freezes us, we felt our clothes

hard…our backpacks as saddles…the zippers didn`t open or close…the beards and moustaches full of icicles slicked to the “pasamontañas”(head and face covering cap)…this is becoming very cold….I have seen this with temperatures of -30, fortunately, there is no wind, if not, our march would be frozen. We got closer to our great obstacle seen in pictures, and now we really faced a big obstacle to which we had to find its weak side but we see nothing…we see nothing because the night comes quickly…and the chance that this gave to the moon for our reconciliation of past nights when it laughed at us of our confinement in the tents and rejected its help again… it`s nowhere!!!... So, we put the staves to assure Rodrigo, the rest is ready for any fall…we see some open cracks lower and we feel everything becomes slow…I don`t fell my feet…am I in the limit to support the cold?....no one else has complained…We waited for the slow march of Rodrigo looking for the best way and suddenly, I get anxious and see how Rodrigo cannot hold himself up and slides on the side like a pendulum falling about 20 meters lower…the lock worked well….there is no more light from the lamps and some stars will help…I cried out: How are you?...How do you feel?...Rodrigo gets ready but says nothing…it seems that he feels cold in his hands in spite of the gloves. I want to go on fighting, we are so close…but the facts weight and the experience tells me no to go on…Tomorrow is another day and now we know how is the East face of the Mount…..¡¡¡OK….fellows….That`s all for today, let`s go back!!!... As if each of these ice adventurers had deduced all the facts:…late departure…roped team of 5 (slow)….trapping of Rodrigo in the crack…the coming night…the cover of a cold mist…..cold feet…..and Rodrigo`s fall….I think it`s not necessary to comment any more to try to look for the limits…Tomorrow we can go back with a different strategy.

The return becomes eternal…on the Glacier and with the lamps on; we seemed to be shooting stars at low speed. We returned without saying any word…silence was present without the presence of the wind. The crystal ice on the stones played with Natalia who was on the ground many times before I could tell her. At 9.30 pm we hugged all together thanking the experience of that day…Victor and I checked our feet and we feel nothing…after the first aids, there is no reaction. Victor has all his toes purple and I have only my left foot purple. We put tibia water and warmed our tents…after 2 hours our feet are still rigid and no reaction to the stimuli… We all gathered in our tent and called the Yamana Lighthouse to ask for some suggestions to improve the first aids…we got some, but at midnight and without any result, we decided to apply the protocol designed with the Navy to evacuate the place; at least those who were affected by the cold burns. We left at night at 1.30 am and every hour we got in touch by radio to meet the Navy Patrol that came immediately, taking about 4 hours from Puerto Williams to our boarding place. Now, the moon was shinning and guide our night march…answering to make up from its crazy

presence during the stormy days!!!!!. As we went lower, we confirmed that the Ferrino Camp was still there…we always doubted about it due to the winds of the past nights. At 4.30 sharp, we said good bye to our companions. The instruction was to wait for the light at dawn to go to Camp 2…disassemble and carry the Ferrino Camp. So, this meant to make a bivouac in the forest close to the beach. The rest of the facts showed us that our decisions were correct. We were helped in the Hallef Patrol of the Chilean Navy (there was no tea, but a delicious soup) and at 8.30 we were at the hospital in Puerto Williams…At midday, we were evacuated to Punta Arenas in an airplane of the Chilean Air Force. On the plane and following the path of Lapataia Valley, I could visually assume the uncountable Glaciers falling from the North side of the Cordillera Fueguina. I recognize some of them, such as the Stoppani Glacier, Widow Glacier, Cave Glacier, Darwin Glacier and Marinelli Glacier, one of the biggest and over Mount Bukland. This time, my friend The Moon is serious and slept tenderised by the weak sunrays covering it. Day time, The Sun and nighttime The Moon go around the “Joshiken” Sanctuary….where the snow blooms…

HISTORY AND CULTURE OF CUEVA DEL MILODON (MILODON CAVE)

El nombre Cueva del Milodón se originó porque en el lugar se encontraron restos paleontológicos de un animal extinto hace varios milenios, que se denominó Milodón. También se descubrieron evidencias del primitivo hombre patagónico, cuya data aproximada bordea los 12.000 años de antigüedad.

Its name was originated because in its site were found some remains of an extinct paleontological animal several millennia ago, this animal was named Milodon. There was also discovered evidence of the primitive Patagonian man, from about 12,000 years ago.

En cuanto al origen de la caverna propiamente tal, actualmente hay dos hipótesis que explican su formación: una dice que se debió a la erosión provocada sobre el conglomerado rocoso, por las olas de un enorme lago que habría invadido la cuenca de Natales, al producirse el retiro del hielo que la rellenaba durante la última era glacial cuaternaria de la Patagonia (aprox. 20.000 años atrás). La segunda hipótesis señala que se habría ido formando lentamente al disolverse el hielo y mediante la acción del agua, las sales y el viento en la roca formaron la cueva durante unos 100.000 años aproximadamente y que corresponden al periodo Cretácico. El interés científico data de 1896, cuando se produjo el hallazgo, de piel, huesos y otros restos de un animal extinto, un perezoso terrestre llamado MILODÓN (Mylodon Darwin J.). En 1902, el inglés Hesketh Prichard exploraró la Patagonia con la esperanza de encontrar un Milodón vivo. Actualmente hay una réplica de la figura del milodón en fibra de vidrio en la entrada de la cueva. Esta caverna tiene 200 metros de profundidad y un promedio de 35 metros de ancho. Está localizada frente a un fiordo del Océano Pacífico, rodeada por bosques nativos y fauna regional. En el área hay otras cavernas de menor tamaño, algunas con estalactitas. En casi todas estas cavernas se han encontrado restos humanos de 12.390 años de antigüedad. El clima es seco, con 450 mm de precipitaciones al año; en otoño y primavera llueve y en invierno nieva.

As for the origin of the cave itself, there are currently two hypotheses to explain its formation: one says that was due to erosion of the conglomerate rock, the waves of a huge lake that have invaded Natales basin , after the glacier ice that filled it receded during the last Patagonian glacial Quaternary (approx. 20,000 years ago). The second hypothesis states that could be originated slowly when the ice melted and through the action of the water, salts and the wind in carving the rock and forming the cave during about 100,000 years . The scientific interest dates from 1896 when a skin, bones and other remains of an extinct animal were discovered,a ground sloth called MILODÓN (MylodonDarwin J.). In 1902, the englishman Hesketh Prichard explored Patagonia with the hope of finding an alive Milodon. Currently there is a replica of the Milodn figure made of fiberglass at entrance of the cave. This cave is 200 meters deep and an average of 35 meters wide. It is located in front of a Pacific Ocean fiord, surrounded by native forests and fauna. There are other smaller caves in the area, some of them have stalactites. In most of these caves have been found human remains from 12,390 years old. The climate is dry, with 450 mm of rainfall per year, in autumn and spring rains and winter snows.

Ingredients

Ingredientes 2 Kilos De Ruibarbo

2 Kilos Of Rhubarb

2 Kilos De Azucar

2 Kilos Of Sugar

Jugo de 1 limón

Juice of 1 lemon

Preparación En una olla colocar 2 kilos de ruibarbo picado fino, 2 kilos de azúcar y el jugo de 1 limón, revolver y dejar reposar unos minutos, luego, cocinar durante 1 hora a fuego medio o hasta que la mezcla tenga consistencia de Mermelada. Retirar del fuego y verter en frascos y dejar enfriar.

Preparation In a saucepan put 2 kilos of finely chopped rhubarb, 2 kilos of sugar and the juice of 1 lemon, stir and let stand a few minutes, then cook for 1 hour over medium heat or until mixture has consistency of jam. Remove from heat and pour into jars and let cool.

Fauna de la Patagonia

EL NEGRITO DE ULIAN PROFESSOR ALFREDO SOTO OUTDOORS EDUCATOR

Fueron ellos, los animales del bosque, los que, cuando Ulian era niño, lo salvaron de una muerte horrible... Cierto día, el indiecito se sentó en el bosque para hablar seriamente con un insignificante pajarito negro al que él llamaba precisamente “Negrito”. Como tantas otras veces, Ulian trataba de convencerlo de que él era tan útil y bello como los otros pájaros, pero el Negrito no se convencía: -¿No ves que no tengo ni una pluma de color? ¿No te das cuenta de que soy tan chiquito que casi no se me ve? Mírame bien: ¡Soy feo!... ¡muy feo! Tan seguro estaba el pajarito de lo que decía, que creía que todos pensaban lo mismo que él y, por eso, andaba

siempre solo, así nadie podría compararlo con las bellísimas aves de colores que habitaban el bosque. Tan ocupado estaba el indiecito con su pajarito desvalido, que no oyó acercarse a un gigante malvado que vivía en las cercanías y que tenía mucha envidia de los poderes mágicos de Ulian. En un abrir y cerrar de ojos había atado al pobre niño tehuelche y lo había encerrado en una cueva, que había tapiado totalmente, esperando que muriera. Pero... sin darse cuenta, el gigante había dejado una pequeña hendidura sin tapar, y por allí se coló el Negrito. Con su débil pico intentó desatar las cuerdas que inmovilizaban al prisionero, pero tenía tan poquita fuerza que no pudo conseguir nada. Además, el gigante, al darse cuenta de su presencia, lanzó un rugido tan fuerte que le arrancó todas las plumas de su espalda. Anda y pide ayuda a mis hermanos, los animales, ellos me

Ulian era un indio tehuelche que poseía extraordinarios poderes. Todos lo amaban y respetaban en su tribu y no sólo sus hermanos, los indios; lo amaban también las plantas y los animales, con los que podía hablar porque conocía todos sus idiomas y podía entenderse con ellos a las mil maravillas.

El negrito estaba tan asustado y desesperado que se olvidó de su vergüenza y de un solo vuelo aterrizó en el claro del bosque, donde estaban reunidos los animales y les contó, casi llorando, lo que pasaba. Rápidamente, se formó un congreso y quedó preparado el plan: La Liebre cavaría un túnel desde su guarida hasta la cueva y por él sacarían a Ulian. Esperaron a que se hiciera de noche y comenzó la tarea; si bien es cierto que el jefe era la Liebre, todos los animales ayudaban a sacar la tierra y despejar el túnel, hasta que por fin llegaron a las paredes de la caverna.

Allí escucharon unos golpecitos que Ulian pegaba con los talones para indicar su posición y, en el mayor silencio, la Liebre cavó un gran orificio. El Negrito, mientras tanto, se había vuelto a meter en la cueva, para hacerle compañía a Ulian y ver los pormenores del rescate. Entre todos los animales arrastraron al prisionero, todavía atado y amordazado, por el túnel recién cavado, rumbo a la guarida de la Liebre, donde pensaban esconderlo. Ya estaban por empezar la marcha, cuando el gigante se despertó y lanzó un feroz rugido. El Negrito se llevó un susto mayúsculo, pero lo primero que pensó era que debía avisar a sus amigos que el gigante estaba furioso, y lo primero que se le ocurrió fue ponerse a gritar tan fuerte como el gigante (en realidad, eso creía él): - chuuit... chuuit... chuuit... chuuit... chuuit... chuuit... chuuit... chuuit. El gigante, más enfurecido que antes, por semejante osadía del Negrito, le arrojó una gruesa capa de arcilla color marrón que se pegó profundamente en la espalda del pájaro, y se dedicó a perseguirlo. Los animales aprovecharon para proseguir con el rescate, mientras la Liebre iba taponando el túnel recién construido Cuando estuvo seguro de que Ulian estaba a salvo, el Negrito, totalmente embarrado en su espaldas, dejó de gritar y, con las pocas fuerzas que le quedaban, voló hasta un matorral, a cuyos pies cayó desmayado. Allí lo recogió una Bandurria, que lo llevó hasta Ulian que, con unos pocos pases mágicos lo curó, pero decidió que para siempre llevara el color marrón en su plumaje de la espaldas, como muestra de su coraje y valentía. Y, por esa causa, el Negrito ya no lo es en su totalidad, sino que tiene los colores que tanto envidiaba a las otras aves.

THE NEGRITO OF ULIAN PROFESSOR ALFREDO SOTO OUTDOORS EDUCATOR

Ulian was a Tehuelche native having extraordinary powers. Everybody loved and respected him within the tribe, and not only his brothers the natives; but the plants and the animals loved him. He could talk with them because he knew all languages and could understand each other clearly. When Ulian was a kid, the animals of the forest saved his life from a terrible death... One day, the native sat down in the forest to talk seriously with an insignificant black bird that he used to call Negrito. As many other times, Ulian tried to convince him that he was as helpful and beautiful as the other birds, but Negrito was not convinced: -Don`t you see that I have not even one colored feather? Don`t you realize that I am so little that I am almost seen? Look at me well: I am ugly! ... Very ugly! The little bird was so sure of what he said, that he thought everybody thought the same and because of that, he was always alone, so no one could compare him with the beautiful colorful birds living in the forest. The native was so busy with his disadvantaged bird, that he didn`t hear a devil giant coming. He lived around and he was very envy of Ulian’s powers. In a blink of an eye, he had tied up the poor Tehuelche boy and put him in a cave that he had totally closed, waiting for him to die. However... without realizing about it, the giant had left a small crack open and Negrito went in through it. With his weak beak, he tried to untie the ropes that immobilized the prisoner, but he was so weak that he couldn`t get anything. Besides, when the giant realized about his presence, roared so loud that he took all the feathers from his back.

Go and ask for help to my brothers the animals; they will help me; Ulian thought, because he was gagged. Negrito was so scared and desperated that he forgot about his shame and in just one flight he landed in a forest clearing, where all animals were together. Almost crying, he told them what was happening. Immediately, there was a congress and they prepared a plan: The hare would dig a tunnel from his den to the cave, and through it, they would liberate Ulian. They waited for the night and started the mission; it was well known that the hare was in charge, all animals helped to take the soil off and clean the tunnel, to find the walls of the cave. Then, they heard Ulian knocking with his heels to indicate his location, and in the major silence, the hare digged a big hole. In the meantime, Negrito went into the cave again to be with Ulian and see the details of the rescue mission.

All animals took and dragged the prisoner, still tight and gagged, through the tunnel to the den of the hare, where they wanted to hide him. When they were about to start the march, the giant waked up and roared loudly. El Negrito was very scared; but the first thing he thought was to tell his friends that the giant was furious. The first idea he had, to shout as loud as the giant (so, that is what he thought): - chuuit... chuuit... chuuit... chuuit... chuuit... chuuit... chuuit... chuuit. The giant, more furious tan before due to such Negrito’s daring, threw him a thick portion of brown clay that got strongly sticked in the back of the bird, and he started to go with him. The animals took advantage to go on with the rescue mission, while the hare was closing the tunnel that had been recently built. When he was sure that Ulian was safe, Negrito totally mudded on his back, stop crying and with the little strength he had left, he flew to a bush and he faint and fell down. A Bandurria took him and went to Ulian’s, who healed him with a few magic steps, but decided that Negrito always had that brown color on his feathers, as a symbol of his courage and bravery. And, due to that, Negrito is not totally brown. But he has the colors of other birds that he envies.

Festival de la Esquila 2015

Eventos

El Festival de la Esquila, es una fiesta típica de la comuna rural de Laguna Blanca, ubicada en la provincia de Magallanes. La cuál se lleva a cabo el tercer fin de semana de enero de cada año, en la capital de la comuna, Villa Tehuelches, con demostraciones de esquila, movimiento de perros ovejeros, jineteadas, música gaucha y folklórica, bailes, asados, comidas típicas, artesanías. Este evento es imperdible para los visitantes de esta zona, ya que muestra parte importante de nuestras raíces, costumbres, y lo mejor de nuestra tierra. Cabe mencionar que el festival cumple 25 años y la entrada es gratuita, por lo cuál está toda la comunidad y los visitantes invitados a participar de estas actividades, los días 17 y 18 de enero.

SHEARING FESTIVAL 2015 VILLA TEHUELCHE – PATAGONIA - CHILE

The Shearing Festival is a typical party of the rural county Laguna Blanca, located in the province of Magallanes. This party is celebrated the third weekend of January every year, in Villa Tehuelches, with shows of shearing, sheep dogs, rodeo, gaucha music and folklore, dances, barbecues, typical food and handcrafts. The visitors cannot lose this event because it shows an important part of our roots, costumes and the best of our land. It is worth mentioning that this Festival has its 25th anniversary and the entrance is free. So, all people and visitors are invited to participate in these activities on January 17 and 18.

MÚLTIPLES LECTURAS, MÚLTIPLES LECTORES La lectura, seguramente como todo quehacer humano, no supone una actividad unívoca. Sentidos, percepciones e interpretaciones confluyen y a la vez se desparraman en divergentes miradas de lo que se dijo o quiso decir. En este sentido, de seguro es certero eso de que “hay un libro para cada uno”. Ficción o no ficción, literatura o títulos técnicos, títulos que serán objeto del gusto de unos u otros según las personales inclinaciones o el ánimo del momento. La lectura, más allá del ejercicio de la decodificación, es un escenario de encuentro (o desencuentro) entre el mundo del autor y el del creador, choque de galaxias que en el más feliz de los casos pone en marcha reconocimientos, nuevas miradas y siempre frescas complicidades. Y cuidado!... que en esto no nos engañe la trampa de la singularidad: la lectura se ejerce en plural. Múltiples lecturas, y en consecuencia, múltiples lectores. Mundos, voces, mira-

das diversas en posibilidad de encontrarse. Un ejercicio, entonces, donde la imposición y el intento de sacralizar “la correcta interpretación” no puede o no debiera tener cabida. Es por esto que resulta preocupante la fallida pretensión, no poco habitual, de inculcar el amor por la lectura a los niños a punta de “bibliografías obligatorias” y controles de lectura, propios de un ejercicio escolarizante tan vacuo como superado por nuevas prácticas y afanes, dentro y fuera del aula. Como si fuera esto una condena, los pequeños deben cumplir con un rito que considera seguir al pie de la letra la ceremonia transmitida por algunos padres y maestros: una forma leer, un sentido y lugar para la lectura. Mitología que asigna un rol sagrado al objeto libro, “que no puede salir de la sala”, “que no se puede llevar al piso”, “cuidado con ensuciarlo”, “no arrugue las hojas”, son frases ya conocidas. ¿Cuál será la mejor forma de alejar a los niños del libro y la lectura? Seguramente por aquí hay un punto de partida.

Si aceptamos la multiplicidad de lecturas y hábitos lectores, entonces por qué invalidar la posibilidad de que los pequeños exploren, indaguen y elijan libros e historias a su arbitrio. O que puestos frente al soporte (objeto) libro le den usos sorpresivos, para concluir que también sirven como asiento, terrario o cofre de mapas y secretos piratas. Formas, colores, sabores y texturas son descubiertas entre los recovecos de un relato, por quienes apenas saben de letras y formalidades. Están en todo su derecho. ¿Y por qué no, si ellos construirán los significados del mañana?. Dejo mis viejos libros, recogidos / en rincones del mundo, venerados / en su tipografía majestuosa, / a los nuevos poetas de América (Pablo Neruda, Testamento II)

MULTIPLE READINGS, MULTIPLE READERS Reading, probably as any human task, doesn’t suppose an unambiguous activity. Senses, perceptions and interpreting converge and at the same time spread in different looks about what was said or meant. In this sense, it is sure that saying: There is a book for each of us”. Fiction or not fiction, literature or technical titles, titles that will be the objective of some people’s likes or others according to the personal preferences or the mood of the moment. Reading, beyond the decoding exercise, is a meeting scene between the author’s world and creator’s world, crash of galaxies that in the happiest of the cases, it activates recognitions, new looks and always fresh complicities. And be careful!... So as not be deceived by the singularity: Reading is executed in plural. Multiple readings, and as a consequence, multiple

readers. Worlds, voices, diverse looks with the chance to meet. Then, an exercise, where the imposition and the try to sacralize the right interpreting” cannot or cannot have a place. Due this, it is worrying the failed pretension, not so unusual, of instill the love for Reading to children by means of mandatory bibliographies” and Reading quizzes, proper of a school exercise so vacuous as over passed by new practices and efforts, in and out of the classroom. As if this was a condemn, children must comply with a rite that considers following the rules of a ceremony transmitted by some parents and teachers: a way to read, a sense and a place for reading. Mythology assigning a sacred role to the object book, “that cannot be out of the classroom”, “that cannot be put on the floor”, “be careful to get it dirty”, “do not crumple the sheets”, are well known phrases. What will be

the best way to distance children from books and reading? Surely, there is a starting point here. ¿Cuál será la mejor forma de alejar a los niños del libro y la lectura? Seguramente por aquí hay un punto de partida. If we accept the multiplicity of readings and readers’ habits, then why to invalidate the chance that children explore, find out and choose books and stories at their liking. Or, facing the support (object) book, give surprising uses, to conclude they also serve as seats, terrariums or maps chests and pirates secrets. Shapes, colors, flavors and textures are discovered among the nooks of a tale, by who know about letters and formalities. They are in their own right. And why not? If they will build the meanings of tomorrow?
