October 28 to November 2 A Jewish Journey ISRAEL Friday October 19th Professor Rachel Elior will join us in Safed for Shabbat. 12:45 pm: Departure for Safed from David Intercontinental Hotel in Tel Aviv 4:45 pm: Erev Shabbat program visiting several shuls in Safed (tentative, depending upon arrival time). 7:15 pm: Shabbat Dinner at hotel.

Saturday October 20th Synagogue or walk around Safed. 11:00 am: Lecture by Professor Rachel Elior. “Safed Kabbalah – Catastrophe and Restitution”. Lunch at Rimon Inn. Afternoon visit to Frankel and Castel Art Museum and Gallery. 7:00 pm: Dinner at Haʼari 8 in Safed with Klezmer Band.

Sunday October 21st 8:30 am: Depart Hotel and Safed. Visit to Hula Valley 11:30 am: Travel to Nazareth where we will spend an extremely interesting afternoon with Prof. Noam Shoval and members of the Nazareth community. 7:15 pm Enjoy a light dinner in Jerusalem before checking into the David Citadel Hotel.

Monday October 22nd 8:30 am: Issues facing Ethiopian Community by Professor Steven Kaplan. Visit to Hebrew U legal clinic supporting Ethiopian community issues. 12:30 pm: Lunch on Mount Scopus with Hebrew University program director responsible for Haredi student program and with students in this program. 2:00 pm: Presentation on Professor Nachman Ben- Yehuda.

3:00 pm: Tour of Haredi neighbourhoods in Jerusalem. 6:30 pm: Light dinner at a Mamilla Mall Restaurant followed by, 8:00 pm: Israeli folk dancing evening at hotel.

Tuesday October 23rd 8:30 am: Meet with Fuad Abuhamed, Asper Foundation prizewinner and local businessman, who will discuss Entrepreneurship for women in the East Jerusalem sector and with Dr. Eshel Ophir, Director of the Hebrew University Belmonte Labs, who will discuss a program that teaches science to Arab school girls from East Jerusalem. Travel to Lod to visit Hebrew U project for Arab youth. Return to Jerusalem. Light lunch at Cafit Restaurant. We will be joined by Nir Waiskopf, a recipient of one of CFHUʼs Prize in Excellence. % ! !%"!% $ % !%! %###" 

2:00 pm: Choose your activity: Yad Vashem; Israel Museum; Herzl Museum; Begin Museum. 7:30 pm: Dinner with Professor Vered Vinitsky Seroussi, Dean of Faculty of Social Science, who will discuss the social protest movement in Israel today.

Wednesday October 24th 8:30 am: Share an exciting and informative morning with outstanding researchers from the Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada at our Ein Kerem Campus. 12:30 pm: Lunch at the Belgium House Faculty Club on the Safra Campus followed by a wonderful tour with Professor Hanoch Gutfreund, former president of the Hebrew University, who will lead us on an historic 1948 to 1967 tour of the Hebrew University campuses situated throughout Jerusalem. Late afternoon and evening free.

Thursday October 25th 8:30 am: Depart hotel for visit to Faculty of Agriculture in Rehovot with emphasis on water technology, International program and agribusiness. 12 noon: Lunch with International students. 2:00 pm: Afternoon visit to Tel Aviv and Bauhaus Tour. Free time. 7:00 pm: Dinner in Tel Aviv at Maganda Restaurant.

Friday October 26th 9:00 am: Tour of City of David and recently opened Roman tunnel with Dr. Yoav Farchi, from the Department of Archaeology, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Free afternoon or tour of Old City with our guide Jeff Katz Erev Shabbat: Walk to Western Wall. Shabbat Dinner at ʻ28 King David Streetʼ. % ! !%"!% $ % !%! %###" 

Saturday October 27th Morning free. Afternoon walking tour of Jerusalem neighbourhood Neve Shaanan. 7:00 pm: Casual dinner at Black Burger restaurant after Shabbat

BARCELONA Sunday October 28 – Friday November 2 With Scholar in Residence Professor Rachel Elior Sunday October 28th 4:00 am: Depart hotel for 7:30 am departure to Barcelona. Meet and greet at the Airport followed by lunch in city. Visit to Miro Museum followed by brief panoramic tour of Barcelona. 3:30 pm: Transfer and check in to Hotel Condes de Barcelona. 5:30 pm: Introductory Lecture with Professor Elior Between Myth and History- the Jewish Settlement in Spain ( Hispania= Sefarad)Minority and Majority 7:00 pm: Dinner at restaurant close to hotel.

Monday October 29th Day tour of Barcelona with lunch at kosher restaurant. 8:00 am: Lecture The Jews of Spain between Moslems and Christians- Integration and Segregation % ! !%"!% $ % !%! %###" 

The Gaudi tour, Parc Güell, the Sagrada Familia temple, the Gaudi houses, Milla and Batllio at the Paseo de Gracia boulevard, finishing at the Gothic quarter; View the Cathedral, the Kings square, the town hall square and the Jewish quarter with the oldest synagogue in Europe. Evening: Flemenco Show and light vegetarian dinner walking distance from hotel.

Tuesday October 30th 8:00 am: Lecture The Beginning of the Kabbalah in Gerona and Barcelona Day tour of Girona and Besalu. The old city of Girona, the Jewish quarter and the Centre Bonastruc Saporta (the Jewish museum). Lunch in Girona. Besalu, visit of the old city, the reconstruction of the medieval synagogue and the oldest Mikva in Europe. Dinner in Barcelona -- Brown 33 – to be confirmed.

Wednesday October 31st 8:00 am: Lecture The Cultural Heritage of the Jews of Spain-Poetry, Medicine, Mysticism and Philosophy Day tour of Figueras and Montserrat. Starting at the Dali Museum at Figueras, the largest Surrealistic object in the world continuing to Montserrat, a town of historical and cultural importance. Free evening.

Thursday November 1st 8:00 am: Lecture Jews and the Inquisition: Jewish Women and the Secret Jewish Kitchen Day tour of Barcelona and Taragona. Starting at the Rivera quarter with the Palau de la musica, the Picasso museum and the church of Santa Maria del Mar, the Ciutadela park and the arc de triumph. Continuing on to the Sant Pau hospital, the largest Modernismo complex, and from there we will climb to the Tibidabo mountain with its magnificent view of Barcelona. After a light lunch we will drive to the Roman imperial city of Terraco, nowadays known as Tarragona, with the oldest Roman remains outside of Italy. Evening night tour of Barcelona with views of illuminated Gaudi houses, the Pueblo Espanyol at the Montjuic, finishing with dinner at Botofumeiro Restaurant (to be confirmed).
