Lake Junaluska, NC 28745

As I sat listening to Bill Hollingsed, Waynesville Chief of Police, share his faith journey at vespers in February I thought, “without this gathering I would never have known this fine young man.” That made me start thinking about the folks who have shared the diverse aspects of their life at these meetings and how vespers has brought us closer as a community. One of the first vesper services I attended after moving back to Junaluska featured a retired minister (yep, we’ve got a plethora of those) who, in another life, was a professional baseball player! More recently we heard from a guy whose jumping over hedges coming home from school helped him become a high school track star, and receive a track college scholarship; he earned a first place NAIA award in track. Another presenter spends a lot of time behind bars—sharing his faith and ministering to prisoners. Another speaker worked after retirement as a volunteer helping hundreds achieve the dream of owning a new home. We’ve discovered several artists—one who designs calendars she sells in her shop, others whose oil paintings or water colors adorn walls in our homes. We also came across some good photographers who share their art in calendars and note cards. We’ve found several writers in our midst—some who have written books, others who are published in newspapers, and many who write Christian literature. A few poets live among us—some very good and some. . .well, a few who should keep their day jobs. Several surprises came from musicians who revealed earlier vocations poles apart from the performers and conductors we know and love. Did you know we had one speaker who met her husband on line? And we’ve had preachers and persons in law enforcement pick up a guitar and sing—they were even able to carry a tune! Several times family members of the presenters played the piano or violin to accompany family vocalists. And who can forget the minister who grew up in Canton but saw the second plane fly into the south tower of the World Trade Center on 9-11. We have heard from folks whose families have been Junaluskans for several generations and from several persons from outside the Assembly. Staff members have told us about life experiences far removed from the person we see on a daily basis. It seems more ministers have participated in our vespers thus far, followed closely by educators. We’ve heard from individuals who had a wonderful childhood and others whose early years were very sad. Some are eager to share their stories; others have been reluctant until someone (usually Dr. Wright Spears) talked them into taking part. Presenters often tell what a growth experience the process was for them. But I don’t think any participant has any idea how many lives they have touched by sharing their personal stories. One thing I know for sure: we are a closer knit Junaluska family because of the many who have shared their journey at vespers. Marie Metcalf, President of Junaluskans

Broadway Star J. Mark McVey Will Perform at The Junaluskan’s Dinner March 18 J. Mark McVey, who made his Broadway debut as Jean Valjean in 'Les Miserables' after having won the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Actor, will present an evening of Broadway music at the March 18 dinner meeting of the Junaluskans. He was also the first American to perform the role in London's West End. In 2008, Mark reprised the role with the Los Angeles Philharmonic to sold-out crowds at the Hollywood Bowl and again in May, 2011, on the 25th Anniversary Tour of Les Miserables where he won the Ovation Award and the BroadwayWorld.com Award on his way to eclipsing 3,268 performances in Les Mis. McVey made his Carnegie Hall debut with Mr. Marvin Hamlisch and continues to perform with numerous symphonies around the country and the world. His television credits include America's Got Talent and All My Children. Mark made his PBS debut with the Boston Pops and followed that performance with the PBS Christmas Special for the U.S. Military Troupes where he was featured with Marvin Hamlisch and The National Symphony Orchestra. Mark also appeared in the PBS Special ‘A Tale of Two Cities in Concert.’ Other Broadway and NY Credits include; Captain Walker in The Who's "Tommy," Tommy Tunes' "The Best Little Whore House Goes Public," the Off-Broadway revival of "Chess," "Hey Love" the critically acclaimed musical review of Mary Rogers' music, conceived and directed by Richard Maltby, Jr., "A Helluva Town" the Bernstein review at Rainbow & Stars, "The Show Goes On," with Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt and Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil staring Margaret Whiting. National Tours and Regional works include: Carousel, Chess, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Seven Brides and the Hal Prince production of "Show Boat." You will not want to miss this very special program. Tickets for the Junaluskans dinner are available at the Bethea Welcome Center. The meal will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Terrace back dining room. The J. Mark McVey concert will be immediately following the dinner in Terrace Auditorium. Put March 18 on your calendar NOW!

Page 2 ONE OF OUR OWN by Pat Maier One of our own, Ken Zulla, was honored with a Haywood County Community Pride Award on Feb. 26 in abstentia, (because he was having back surgery at the exact time of the award ceremony) The Commission for a Clean County (CCC) announces the Community Pride Awards. This program honors businesses, community groups, civic clubs, schools, and individuals for exceptional efforts in the categories of litter pick-up and control, recycling, beautification of public areas and environmental stewardship, which includes "green building". Community Pride winners are chosen based on quality of effort, quality of work actually done, and consistency in good practices, and commitment of those involved in the project. Ken Zulla, as a Lake Junaluska resident has devoted much time, energy, and money to organize the annual Spring Lake Junaluska Clean-up Day. Ken recruits a Boy Scout troop to help with these clean-up projects as a service project. You may not be aware that when Ken became unable (because of back problems) to do as much picking up of litter as in the past, he personally paid an unemployed person to pick-up litter around the lake. That not only got the lake cleaned up weekly, but gave an unemployed person a job. GOOD JOB KEN!! WE ARE PROUD TO CALL YOU ONE OF US!!

PROOF OF HEAVEN to be reviewed by Dr. Mollie Weaver The March Book Review on Wednesday, March 19, at 10:00 a.m. will feature Dr. Mollie Weaver who will review the book, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife, by Eben Alexander, M.D. This is the remarkable, life-changing journey of a highly successful neurosurgeon who had always discounted stories of near-death experiences---that is, until he had his own near-death experience. The book is a fascinating account of his personal journey beyond this world that changed his life, and his thinking. Dr. Weaver is the perfect person to review this book! Mollie, a resident of Waynesville, is an outstanding pediatrician and an engaging presenter. Married to Dr. Jim Weaver and the mother of three daughters, Mollie is an active in her church and in her community. She is personally acquainted with the author of this amazing book. Come and bring a friend to the Susan Todd Lounge on March 19. All are welcome.. Betsy Hardin

From the desk of Jack Ewing, Executive Director I want to give you some brief updates on a number of issues that I believe you will find interesting. 

Lake Lowered - As you have noticed the lake has been lowered. The primary purpose for this was to prevent water from going over the spillway to allow for some minor repairs to it. In addition to that we will be building a new boat launch and fishing pier on the north side of the pool while the water is down. We may also be able to remove a little of the accumulated sediment at the mouths of Richland Creek and Factory Branch (by the Bethea Welcome Center). The Army Corps of Engineers requires us to have the lake back at full pool by April 15 so you should start to see it coming back up around the first of April.

Children’s Playground – With a very generous financial commitment from the Junaluska Associates we are planning a major renovation to the playground behind the Wilson Children’s Building in 2014. We had hoped that we could complete this project this winter prior to the 2014 summer season. For a variety of reasons we have decided to not start the project until after the summer season ends. You should notice a lot of activity (of the construction type) by the middle of August.

Boat Dock and Fishing Pier – Thanks to a major gift by Walton Garrett we will be constructing a new boat dock and fishing pier just to the north of the swimming pool. Not only will this project brighten up the areas on both sides of the pool but it will provide a wonderful location for children (and their grandparents) to “wet a line” in our lake.

Former Private Boat “Storage” Area – In the area to the south of the swimming pool where private boats where piled on the ground we will be converting this space into an attractive contemplative space with an additional bench and nice landscaping. The docks will not be removed at this time.

Terrace Hotel Updates – The mattresses on the 4th and 5th floors of the Terrace Hotel will be replaced with new queen size mattresses. New sheets and towels will be purchased as well. While we are not able to renovate the bathrooms in the Terrace to the level we aspire to at this time we feel it is a good next step to have great beds and linens in our most heavily used hotel.

Jones Dining Hall – As I have previously reported, we will be “winterizing” Jones Dining Hall in 2014 by replacing the original windows with modern double pane windows and installing a heating and air conditioning system. While there are additional improvements that will be made, as funds are available, we believe this improvement will be one of the most significant for us as this wonderful space becomes more usable year-round.

Lambuth Inn – I will provide an update for you on the Lambuth renovation project after the Board of Trustees meeting March 6 & 7.

How blessed we all are to have this amazing place called Lake Junaluska to be our place of residence or, at least, a place we enjoy regularly. Stay tuned, there are many more improvements coming our way in the future.

Page 4 Rev. James Hart Day at Clyde Central UMC Clyde Central United Methodist Church celebrated Rev. James Hart day on February 16. After the worship service where Jim’s family and visiting friends were recognized the entire church gathered for a potluck luncheon and fellowship. Then the real fun began! Sarah Queen Brown, emcee, was supported by the Hart Throbs, a musical group that changed lyrics of songs from Heart to Hart—as in “Hart of My Heart.” Jim was presented an award by the Mayor of Clyde; he was also offered the Keys to the City of Clyde, but only on loan. Jim was praised for his 15 years of service to the church as Minister of Visitation then “roasted” by many of the same folks. Everyone wore bow ties and a parade of the many “hats” Jim has worn over the years included one from his Junaluska years as Santa. Lawrence Braxton and Marie Metcalf, who worked for many years with Jim at Lake Junaluska, were invited to join the “roast.” Lawrence did most of the “roasting” recalling a time when Jim was stopped on suspicion of drunk driving while transporting a group of staff (in a Junaluska van) because he was driving all over the road while he “talked” with his hands as he entertained his riders with a tall tale. Marie recalled how Jim at one time sold bags of food for the ducks to persons walking around the Lake— and now the lake can’t get rid of “Jim’s well-fed ducks.” In my opinion Jim deserved all the praise for his life of service, but he also deserved the “roasting” as well. Congratulations, Jim!
