Literacy Homework Sheet 1 Monster – 1 “Monster!” said Monster Brown happily. The bell rang for the end of afternoon school. Monster took one last look at the book open before him. He wished that he could take it home with him. There was a large picture of a dinosaur on the page. The artist had left out nothing. Monster looked at the great scales, the sharp teeth and the pointed horn on its head. “That’s what I call a monster picture,” he said. The other children were already walking noisily out of the room, pushing and shoving. No one disturbed Monster. The others all liked him because he was such an easy-going boy, but you did not muck about with Monster Brown when he was reading about beasts from long ago. Monster stood up and took the book back to the shelf. Carefully he put the book in its place. There were many more books on the shelf. Monster knew them all by heart. There were pictures of the dinosaurs, dodos, unicorns, and all the others. He had been reading about them for years. He knew them so well it was almost as if he had seen them all, even if none of them had lived for thousands of years. Mrs Mack looked up from a pile of books she was marking. “I can never remember,” she smiled. “Do they call you Monster because you’re always reading about them, or because you always call something monster when you like it?” “I don’t know,” said Monster. “Bit of both, I expect.” He turned to leave the room. His foot caught in a hole in the floor and he almost tripped. “Careful!” warned Mrs Mack. “This place is a danger to life and limb. Holes everywhere.” Monster looked round the room. It did look fairly grotty. The walls were cracked and one part of the ceiling was lower than the other. Pearson Publishing, Chesterton Mill, French’s Road, Cambridge CB4 3NP Tel 01223 350555

“It looks lived-in,” he said. “It almost looks died-in,” said Mrs Mack. “Never mind. Tomorrow’s the big day.” Monster looked blank. Mrs Mack sighed. “The clean-up,” she said gently. “The parents, teachers and children are all coming in tomorrow morning to give the school a good clean-up. You took a letter home about it.” “Oh yes,” said Monster. “That’s right.” Questions A 1

Literacy Homework Sheet 24 Writing – 1 Activities A Name these three animals.
.................................
................................
................................
Make a list of ten other animals. Draw a picture of one of the animals on your list. Activities B Look at the pictures of the animals at the top of this page. Make up a new name for each animal. This name must have something to do with what the animal looks like or does. For example, if you had to make up a new name for a cat, you could call it a purrer, because it purrs, or a lightfoot, because it is light on its feet. Make a list of ten different animals and the sound each one makes. Extra work If there is time, make up an imaginary animal, like the unicorn. Draw a picture of it and give it a name.
