A BIG WARM WELCOME TO LISTOWEL’S 21st FOOD FAIR! Listowel Food Fair has come of age. Twenty one years of continued success will be celebrated this year with a bigger and better festival and a new date. This year’s Food Fair is being moved to June. To celebrate the 21st we will host the inaugural All Ireland Craft Beer Championships and a whole range of foodie fun. The shift to summer will mean lots of open air activities including barbeques, food foraging in the local park known by the natives as The Cow’s Lawn and a food trail through the old heritage town of Listowel, on the hub of The Wild Atlantic Way. Kerry Group, the biggest food ingredients company in the world, started out here. The rich farmland of North Kerry provides food fit for kings and our unique farming seminars are geared towards the enhancement of our local produce. Listowel is the people’s food festival and we encourage and promote emerging artisan producers who are given prizes and publicity. Their genius and endeavour is celebrated at our Gourmet Celebration Dinner.

Our childrens’ activities include school competitions and workshops and our new nutrition events place an emphasis on healthy eating. Bring the family for the day out! Listowel’s restaurants have won numerous awards including Kerry Chef of the Year and Georgina Campbell’s Best Casual Dining. There are famous pubs too in this town that boxes well above its weight when it comes to festivals. Listowel is all about genius, tradition, friendship, innovation, education and fun. There are workshops and cooking demos, big stars from the world of cooking and a superb Farmer’s Market in the Town Square. Listowel has always been a food town and a fun town. Our visitors come as tourists and leave as friends. You are all invited to our 21st. Ah but it will be some party. Billy Keane | Writer and Journalist | The Irish Independent

This remarkable lady will be honoured with the unveiling of a plaque in her memory by U.S. Ambassador Kevin O’Malley at her original home, 26 Upper William Street at this year’s Listowel Food Fair.

TRIBUTE TO KATHY BUCKLEY AMERICAN PRESIDENTS COOK FREE ENTRY Date | June 18th TIME | 5 pm VENUE | Outside 26 upper william st. The story of Listowel woman Kathy Buckley who became chef for American presidents in the White House is a remarkable one. Born in 1885 at 26 Upper William Street, Listowel, Kathy was educated at the Convent Primary School in Listowel and afterwards secured employment as a trainee cook from the Huggard family at the renowned Butler Arms Hotel in Waterville. In the early years of the 1900s an entourage of wealthy Americans, led by the famous banker and financier J.P. Morgan, visited the hotel. Morgan was so impressed by the quality of the cuisine that he offered Kathy a position at his own mansion in Connecticut. She rapidly progressed to become head chef at Morgan’s home and from there was invited by his personal friend, incoming President Calvin Coolidge, to become head of the White House kitchens. Kathy retained this position during his and the subsequent terms of Presidents Hoover and Roosevelt. From various anecdotes Kathy appeared to have a good personal relationship with the Presidents. Thanks to local historian Vincent Carmody, many stories prevail about ‘Kathy White House’ as she became known on her visits back to Listowel. Kathy retired to her beloved home on the banks of the River Feale in the early fifties. Kathy Buckley, cook extraordinaire to three American Presidents, died on 19.07.69.
