Lincoln Ski Team Handbook

The Lincoln High School Ski Team (LHS SKI) is part of Three Rivers Ski League (TRL) http://www.ski3rivers.org/, under the jurisdiction of Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association’s (OIRSA) Alpine Division http://www.oisra.org/Alpine/. LHSKI trains at Mount Hood Meadows (MHM) https://www.skihood.com/ on Wednesday nights and have races on one of Mt. Hood’s 3 main ski resorts (Ski Bowl, Timberline or MHM) almost every Saturday in January and February. We are a Club sport and receive no funding from the school. All expenses are supported by the team members through fees, fundraising and donations. LHS SKI’s Head Coach is Robin Chapin and Assistant Head Coach is Cameron Clear. To ensure adequate coaching and training time, we would like the team size is limited to a maximum of 42 athletes. Should interest exceed capacity, spots on the team will be determined through a tryout process. Tryouts will consist of dryland training and, snow conditions permitting, at least one day of skiing on Mt. Hood. The tentative date for tryouts is either December 3rd or 4th. All NEW Racers are REQUIRED to attend Tryouts to be considered for the open slots on the Ski Team. Before committing to tryout for LHS SKI, please be advised of the following team membership criteria: 1) While no racing experience is required, the athlete must be able to ski carving, parallel turns on the equivalent of an intermediate (“blue”) run. Coaches will not be able to provide individual attention to skiers who do not meet this criterion. New team members will be required to ski with the coaches at least once to ensure minimum skiing ability. Should snow conditions preclude this and it later becomes clear that the athlete does not meet this requirement; the student’s eligibility to remain on the team will be revoked, with forfeiture of fees. 2) Participation in Wednesday night trainings, dryland trainings and Saturday league races is required. The minimum participation is four mountain trainings and four of the six TRL races. Should Lincoln qualify for State as a team, participation in four league races is required to be eligible to race both the slalom and giant slalom events. If you are unable to attend a practice or race, you must provide adequate notification to Coach Chapin, who reserves the right to remove a racer from the team for multiple unexcused absences, with forfeiture of fees. 3) Parent/Guardian Volunteering is MANDATORY. A minimum of two volunteer days, at least one of which is on the mountain at one of the two races we host or co-host, is REQUIRED. The team is fined if an inadequate number of volunteers is not provided. Each family is required to provide a $200 volunteer deposit check which is destroyed or returned at the end of the season if the volunteer commitment is met. On mountain duties consist primarily of gatekeeping. Training is provided and there are volunteer positions for non-skiers.

GENERAL INFORMATION COSTS AND REFUNDS Self-registration with OISRA OISRA Racer & Parent/Guarian Volunteer Registration ($65 for Racer & FREE for Parent/Guardian Volunteer) and for all NEW Racers, a nonrefundable $30 fee to LHS SKI is required to participate in tryouts, if necessary. For athletes who join the team, the subsequent 2016-17 7 season fee is estimated to be $800. Season fees cover the costs of coaching, chartered bus transportation to training at Meadows, Three Rivers League fees, lift tickets for races not at Meadows, team-building activities and equipment. Not included are the cost of a Meadows Season Pass, Timberline lift ticket for the Tryout (if necessary), team-building weekend (optional) or participation in the State Championships, should the team or individual racers qualify. Fees cannot be prorated based on reduced attendance. The budget is based on every team member paying fees. Refunds funds are not possible once the season has started. All fees are deposited into the team’s bank account and managed by the team Treasurer. Also, provided adequate notice (defined as prior to 7 am on race day) is given to the Coach Chapin and he confirms back to you receipt of notice, the cost of any unused lift tickets will be refunded at the end of the season. Racers with a Fusion Pass will receive a refund for the Ski Bowl Racer ticket value for all TRL Races held at Ski Bowl that the Racer attends at the end of the Season.

Dryland Tryouts 3:30-5 at LHS: 11/15, 11/17, 11/29 and 12/1 MANDATORY Mountain Day/Tryouts w/Coaches for NEW Participants, snow permitting, either December 3rd or 4th. An email communication will be sent when the date and location (Timberline or Meadows) is confirmed. Associated lift ticket cost is not included in the tryout fee.

TRANSPORTATION DURING SEASON Buses are chartered to transport racers to MHM for training on Wednesday nights. There is no bus for Saturday races, and while we try to facilitate carpools, parents are ultimately responsible for their racer’s transportation to and from the mountain on Saturdays. By OISRA regulation, racers are NOT permitted to drive to the mountain for night training or races. The TRL mandated penalty for violation of the rule against racers driving to the mountain is racer disqualification for four consecutive races.

DRYLAND TRAININGS Dryland training takes place at Lincoln on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 pm. Dryland will start on November 15th and continue through February 16th. There will be no dryland training if school is not in session and during finals week. Athletes should meet the coaches in the cafeteria and arrive prepared for outdoor activities, including running. Attendance is REQUIRED and will be recorded. Race order is often determined based on attendance at dryland training.

MOUNTAIN TRAINING On-hill training takes place at MHM, beginning on Sunday, December 3rd or 4th for the Mountain Day/Tryouts, snow permitting, followed by seven Wednesday night sessions 12/14, 1/11, 1/18, 2/1, 2/7, 2/15, & 2/22. Transportation to the mountain is provided via chartered bus and racers are expected to ride with the team. Storage space for gear is available before school on Wednesday mornings. Location for gear drop and times will be communicated prior to the first session. The bus arrives at Lincoln at 3:15, departs as soon as loaded, and typically returns to Lincoln around 10:30 - 11 pm. Please note that weather and road conditions may play into the arrival and departure times. Athletes should pack snacks and drinks for the bus so as not to waste valuable training time in the Lodge.

TEAM ATTENDANCE POLICY It is expected that athletes make it a priority to be part of the team, including attending scheduled trainings. This is a team, not an individual sport. Minimum participation for team membership includes attendance at dryland trainings, four on-mountain training sessions, and at least four of the six league races. Should Lincoln qualify for State as a team, racers must have competed in four TRL races to be eligible to compete in both the GS and slalom events.

Excused absences for dryland and on-mountain trainings must be requested from the Head Coach prior to practice. For Saturday races, the Head Coach must be notified regarding planned absences no later than the preceding Wednesday night. One unexcused absence will result in an automatic demotion in start order at the following race. After three unexcused absences, the Head Coach will contact parents about the racer’s level of commitment and desire to remain on the team. Subsequent unexcused absences may result in the athlete being removed from the team with forfeiture of all fees.

RACES There may be a non-league scored “fun” race likely to be scheduled for January 7th. Details are not known at this time. More information to follow. This will be a one day event and all racers are encouraged to participate. TRL races are Saturdays at Ski Bowl or Meadows (six races between 1/15 and 2/18 or 2/25 (final schedule not yet confirmed). Race schedule and start orders can be found on the league website www.ski3rivers.org before each race. Races start at 10 am, and racers should be in the Lodge by 7:45. Road conditions and traffic can hamper travel time and the parking lots fill up quickly. A timely arrival is crucial so, please plan accordingly and leave extra time for these common race day stresses. Athletes should pack or have money available for lunch. Please be aware that the lines to purchase food can be very long on race weekends. Racers are provided a bib which is their’s to keep at the end of the season. It is the responsibility of the racer to bring his or her bib to each race. Lost bibs can be replaced for $20, and forgotten bibs can be loaned on race day for a $20 deposit. At each race the boys and girls teams are divided into Varsity and Junior Varsity, with a maximum of 6 athletes on each Varsity team. For all races, the selection of Varsity and Junior Varsity as well as race orders are determined by the Coaching staff based on race times, dryland training and on-mountain training attendance and the Head Coach’s evaluation of each racer’s skills, progress and effort. Seeding may change from week to week as the Coaches adjust to the competitive environment, improvements in individual results and other factors. The Head Coach’s decision on race orders is FINAL, with no room for discussion.

ACADEMIC AND BEHAVIOR STANDARDS In order to participate in any OISRA sanctioned events, racers must meet grade eligibility requirements as determined by OSAA rules and regulations (carrying a schedule of at least 5 credit classes with no “F’s” or incompletes in the preceding and current semester). Grade eligibility checks are required by OISRA intermittently throughout the season. Use of illegal drugs and alcohol is not tolerated and will result in immediate EXPULSION from the team. Disruptive or otherwise inappropriate behavior toward coaches, racers, staff, officials, or parent volunteers may also result in suspension from the team. Racers and parents are expected to uphold the standards outlined in the Lincoln High School Activities Code of Conduct.

INSURANCE It is important that your medical coverage information is filled out completely on your medical consent form. A portion of each racer’s OISRA dues goes to cover indemnity

insurance for race workers, volunteers and coaches when assisting with sanctioned alpine events, both on snow and at dryland trainings.

EQUIPMENT Team members are required by OISRA rules to wear a ski racing helmet with a hard surface covering over the ears during gate training and sanctioned high school races. Starting this Season (2016-2017) OISRA Helmet Rule is in effect: The CE mark (a silver sticker) "FIS RH 2013" shall be affixed in a nonremovable way on the back of the race helmet in a visible location not covered by the goggle strap. If this sticker is not present, the athlete may not participate. Please discuss any questions/concerns with Coaches.

In addition to a racing helmet, athletes will need skis, boots, poles, goggles and proper attire. For beginning racers, a good all-mountain ski is adequate for both slalom and GS races. Some racers choose to wear race suits but are not required. Team jackets may be available for order (additional information coming soon) but are also not required.

TEAM-BUILDING ACTIVITIES 1) A pre-season or early season team-building option is being planned by the Team Captains and additional details will be provided as soon as the date and location are confirmed. Participation is highly encouraged, but optional. Costs are included in the season fees. 2) A team-building weekend (location TBD, based on snow conditions) is an optional (highly-encouraged) team-building weekend that will take place sometime in January or February (more details to follow). This is a great opportunity for athletes to improve their ski racing skills and spend time with their teammates and Coaches both on and off the mountain. Costs are not included in the season fees, and are anticipated to be around $250 - $300 to include lift tickets, lodging and food. 3) After the last Wednesday night training session, the bus stops at the Huckleberry Inn for milkshakes, the cost of which is included in the season fees. 4) An End of Season Team Banquet is held for all athletes and their families are invited to attend. Varsity letters and other individual awards will be presented at the banquet.

LEAGUE/STATE COMPETITION Each regular season TRL GS or Slalom race consists of two runs. Team scores for each race are based on the total of the top 3 individual times for each run. Team points are awarded for both varsity and JV based on the team’s finish. Individual finishes are also awarded points if the racer completes both runs successfully, and varsity points determine an individual’s eligibility for State should Lincoln not qualify as a team.

The top teams in TRL qualify for the State Championships based on accumulated team points at League races. Should the Lincoln girls or boys teams qualify, 5 racers plus one alternate will be selected for both GS and Slalom. The composition of the State roster and race orders are completely at the Head Coach’s discretion and participation requirements outlined earlier in this handbook. Should Lincoln not qualify as a team, the top individual GS and Slalom racers from teams who did not qualify for state can qualify as individuals, based on individual Varsity points accrued during the regular season.

VARSITY LETTERS Varsity letters will be granted to individuals who start in at least two Varsity races or to Seniors who have participated on the team in previous years at the Head Coach’s discretion.

FUNDRAISING There will be fundraising opportunities to help fund team-building activities throughout the Season. More details to come at the Ski Swap & Registration Night on November 2nd.
