CCFLs

TECHNICAL NOTES

1,8mm & 2,0mm CCFLs Diameter: Current: Surface Brightness: Life Hours: CIE Colour:

Operation: Cold cathode lamps operate by the principle of gas-discharge illumination. The electrodes inside each end of the CCFL create electron emission when connected to the matched electronic ballast unit. In turn the electron emission causes the Argon/Neon gas-filling to become ionized resulting in discharge glow. The discharge glow reacts with the phosphor coating inside the CCFL glass resulting in visible light. Features:

Incandescent Lamps

Incandescent Lamps

Lamp Construction

Replaceable lamps

An incandescent lamp consists of a tungsten filament within a glass envelope containing a vacuum or inert gas atmosphere. Filaments are made of tungsten wire which can be resistance heated to incandesce for long periods, has a high melting point 3655°K, and has a low rate of evaporation at elevated temperatures. The varying electrical characteristics of the lamps require different filament dimensions. This can result in various shapes of filament construction. These shapes are identified by a filament code. Filaments can be made of straight wire (S), coiled (C) or coiled coil (CC) wire. Short filaments require no additional supports but higher voltage, longer filaments may have one or two supports.

EBS Type lamps

The EBS-Type Lamps can be interlocked by a quarter turn in a suitable PCB cutout. Lamps are available which can be installed from the front or from the rear of the PCB. EBS types may be used with both single and double sided PCB. Coloured lamps

Glass envelopes are available in several shapes and sizes. The most common shapes are tubular, round (globular) and pear-shaped which have designation codes T, G and S respectively. Two size codes are in common use: one - the oldest established - is based upon increments of 1/8-inch so that 1 = 1/8” = 3mm, 2 = 1/4” = 6mm, etc, and the other is a simple millimeter code. Thus, a l0mm diameter bulb is T31/4 or T10. To distinguish the two codes the millimeter version invariably does not have a dash between the letters and the numeric parts.

To impart colour to the light emitted by an incandescent lamp it is common to use a coloured light filter, whether it be a coloured lens or a silicone boot, or a colour coated lamp.In most applications for indicator lamps the definition of colours is based upon the two ordinate system found in the CIE Chromaticity Diagram.

Various types of construction are possible; the most common being bead seal, butt seal and wedge base. The latter has the advantage of being a plug-in construction without the need for an additional cap to be fitted.

CML IT uses a precision colour measurement that indicates not only colour coordinates, but also the luminous density within selectable areas to less than 1 mm diameter. In production CML IT can hold the x, y coordinates of the colour coating to a tolerance of typ. ±.02. The colour reproduction of the printed chromaticity diagram does not give an exact definition of colour, it does however, give a close approximation of the colour.

The brightness of miniature lamps is usually measured as luminous flux using the unit lumen (Im). In the Anglo-American literature the unit “Mean Spherical Candle Power” (MSCP) is used. Both units can be related as follows: 1 MSCP = 4*pi*Lm = 12.57 Lm. The normal production tolerance is ± 25%; however for an extra charge the brightness tolerance can be reduced to 10% or 15%, designated by the suffix AS 10 or AS 15. “AS” means aged and selected. PCB Lamps

The use of lamps on PCB has become very common. The actual installation of the lamps into, and/or onto the PCB can be difficult and costly. Over the course of several years, we have developed lamps which solve many of the common installation problems. The two main categories of lamps are replaceable lamps and non replaceable lamps.

10

Lamps have to be replaceable if their life-time is shorter than the probable operating life of the application. This also allows installation of the lamp at the end of the assembly line to avoid damage caused by PCB handling.

Pure white (an equal mix of all three primary colours: red, green and blue) is located at point “E” (x and y 0.333).

The colour temperature of uncoloured vacuum lamps varies from 1500°K to 2500°K depending upon the ratio of light output to watts consumed. The corresponding colour definition for the Kelvin temperature of the filament is plotted as a curve in the chromaticity diagram. The colour temperature 4000¡ K would have colour coordinates x = .38 and y .38. The brightness of all colored lamps starts from this curve. The greater the distance from the curve the more intensive the colour causing a corresponding reduction in brightness The numbers represented by the x and y coordinates have no unit designation, but the numbers along the edge of the diagram are the wave lengths in nanometers for monochromatic Iight.

Incandescent Lamps

Wedge Base Lamps

Lamps with silicon boots

T11/2 Wedge Base Lamp (5mm)

The advantages of lamps with colour coated silicone boots compared with coloured lamps are: Nonfading during life time of lamps (with high efficiency). Temperature resistant up to 180°C. Resistant to standard solvents used for PCB cleaning. Uniform illumination by diffusion of the intensive filament’s spot. In addition to a range of standard colours, customer specific colours are available. The most economical way to get coloured light is by colouring the lamp. CML IT has developed a coating process that has significantly improved the quality of coloured lamps. The lacquer is nonfading, heat-proof and resistant to scratches and conventional solvents. It is applied in an automated spraying machine which guarantees a uniform coating on the glass. The colour coordinates and luminous flux of the lamps are measured frequently, therefore small tolerances can be maintained. The glass bulb can be etched (frosted) to diffuse the image of the filament. All lamps can be coloured. Some of the advantages of using coloured lamps instead of filters are: Saves money - The colouring of a lamp is less expensive than a colour filter. Samples of various colours and hues of colour can be procured with little expense.
