Michael Freeman:"The exhibition highlights the history of the various boats that have been used during the long and active service of the RNLI in Aberystwyth, beginning in 1861 when the 'Evelyn Wood' was launched. By 1876 the 'Lady Haberfield' had taken over and she too was replaced by a new boat of the same name in 1881. "

your comments c maslin bridgend in the picture of the lifeboat and crew are my gt grandfather John Edwards and and his uncle captain Richard Edwards can anyone tell me anymore on these two men to add to what I know Carolyn Thu Jul 2 14:44:36 2009 Liberte Harries, when I was a child my great uncle Danny was cox. We lived in the street the lifeboat & trailer would go through. When the maroons went off my Mother would make a flask of tea, and some sandwiches & hand it to him as he went by in life boat. They had these 'odd' tins of soup & chocolate, with a sort of cork type stuff with a fuse going down the middle that you would set light to & it would burn down thus heating the contents; when Uncle Danny brought home the old ones my brother & I would argue as to who would have

them! As then we could light the fuse & drink the contents! . Another time I vividly remember is the sea so very rough it could not beach properly [in front of King's Hall on main prom]the men had to jump from the boat, & it was hauled in by hand. As children we would take the wooden sleepers, from the back of lifeboat and run round to the front with them so they would be there for the boat to go over so it was not stuck in the sand! Another time I remember the cars on the front turning to face the sea and switching their headlights on so that the boat could have light. I've lots of memories of lifeboat day & sellinf flags, and having a trip in the lifeboat! Happy days! Mon Jan 1 13:16:14 2007 This site is now closed and cannot accept new comments.

We have a dramatic breeches buoy rescue in the display and the inflatable lifeboat is a great hit with children. They can try lifejackets on and sit inside the boat if they wish to."

Michael Freeman:"The Aquila Wren was the last conventional lifeboat in Aberystwyth and was replaced by a much lighter inshore rescue boat known as a Zodiac. The reasons given for the development were explained as being due to the change in the nature of shipping lines and the decline in shipping trades at the centre of Cardigan Bay."
