Senior of the month
Joan Cohn The Culver City Senior Citizens Association is honoring
J0an Cohn
Senior of the Month ~ April 2018
Joan is the person with the beautiful smile that greets you at the door when you attend our big parties, and has been doing so for 15 years! Surely you have experienced her warm welcome over the years as she enjoys giving you your party favor and wishing you a “Happy _____” (insert holiday or special occasion). Joan also enjoys serving you at the monthly Birthday Party and helps with the Tuesday movie. She always assists with Membership Registration and the Flu Clinic, and served on the CCSCA Board in 2004. For many years, Joan has been willing to help at Senior Center activities whenever and wherever needed. She also loves all the music performances at the Senior Center and participates in the Tai Chi classes when able. Joan was born in Brooklyn and moved to Los Angeles with her family when she was 10 years old. She attended Los Angeles schools and graduated from LACC with a degree in Journalism. She has a certificate in Braille and has written a book in Braille. She enjoyed years of family life with her husband and two sons, Roy and Alan, helping with PTA, scouting, volunteer work and all the fun activities of childhood. Tragedy struck in 1977 when her son, Alan, and her husband both passed away. Joan then returned to the work force in Professional Library Services and worked for lawyers and CPA’s. Joan has been a resident of Culver City for 65 years!!! Thank you, Joan, for your many years of service And charming presence at the Senior Center!
FROM THE CCSCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS A message from Dora Sher, Treasurer of CCSCA IS THERE SUCH A THING AS A FREE LUNCH? Well, yes and no. Imagine a place where you can attend a discussion about current events...or learn computer skills...or learn a new language...participate in a dance class...learn to play a musical instrument...learn about health and diet issues...attend a movie...listen to live music performances...eat a nutritious lunch...socialize with peers over a cup of coffee or tea...and much more, with almost no cost. Does such a place exist? Of course-it’s your Culver City Senior Citizens Center! Most of our outstanding programs are free to our members, but they cost thousands of dollars to develop, produce and run every day. We rely on our members for a small portion of our programming budget. That is why we have formed a Budget Committee (a sub-committee of the Finance Committee) to help review our expenses, identify sources of income and prepare an overall budget for future sustainability and viability of our programs. Your participation, by renewing your membership, supporting our programs through donations and assisting Board Committees and City Staff in running the Center’s programs, is needed and appreciated.
Please note these changes, effective May 1: Pool Room fee will be raised from $.50 to $1.00 Saturday Dance fees will be raised from $3 to $4 for members and from $4 to $5 for non-members Birthday Party prices will be raised from $.50 per item to $.75 per item. Special: 3 items for $2.00
