DIRECTOR’S NOTES In the Heights celebrates life in a Washington Heights barrio. Propelled by the rhythms of hip hop and Latin music, the invigorating beat belies a musical steeped in Broadway tradition. There is a considerable amount of Spanish spoken and sung in the show, but it’s not necessary to be bilingual to understand the thoughts and emotions expressed. We are excited to bring this musical to our own community as we continue to explore our ‘home’. Our entire 2012-2013 season is dedicated to “home” and the strength of family. The Little Mermaid explored love having the ability to create a home beyond the world you know. In the Heights, explores how our community becomes our home and how family history can influence our identity. Our final production, The Dining Room, examines how our homes are where lives are molded over generations. Our own Tiger Drama family has grown this year welcoming new members to our artistic family and additional support from our new parent group, STAGE. STAGE (Supporting Theatre Arts Growth & Education) seeks to raise funds and practical assistance to keep LC Tiger Drama running strong for years to come. With the addition of our new parent group, our Tiger Drama family is truly complete.

Yeah, Baby!! You’ll always be our star. We love you! - “The Fam”

We want to thank you for your continued support of Educational Theatre and the Lewis and Clark High School Tiger Drama Department.

Kiley Barz Here’s to EP & TJ and all your dreams ARTISTIC TEAM Lisa Caryl (Costumer) has costumed shows for Spokane Civic Theatre, Interplayers, Spokane Children's Theatre, and Actors Repertory Theatre. SYNOPSIS As the sun rises on a July morning, Usnavi de la Vega, son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, opens his bodega (neighborhood store) and introduces us to life in the upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights. The barrio's pride and joy, Nina Rosario, has returned from a difficult first year at Stanford University. Her parents, Kevin and Camila, run a car service, but they are struggling to pay all the bills. Benny, a young man from the neighborhood, runs the dispatch while the Rosarios go to the bank to try to secure a loan. Nina enters in search of her parents, and Benny entertains her while she waits. Salon owner Daniela encourages one of her employees, Vanessa, to move out of her mother's apartment—she drinks away all Vanessa's hard-earned money. While getting moving supplies at the bodega, Vanessa agrees to go out on a date with Usnavi, who is so tongue-tied that his younger cousin Sonny actually makes the proposal. When Kevin and Camila return, Nina reveals that she has been lying to them about school for months. She lost her scholarship and has not been going to school since March, in part because she needed to two work part-time jobs to pay for tuition. Kevin resolves to find a way to pay for Nina’s education. Abuela Claudia, the "honorary grandmother" of the neighborhood, comes to Usnavi's bodega. Claudia raised

Usnavi when his parents died, and she has remained very close to Usnavi, dispensing wisdom to him and the other young people in the neighborhood from her front stoop. She has visions of her mother with whom she often speaks and prays. Usnavi discovers that he sold a winning lottery ticket worth $96,000 to someone in the neighborhood. He, Sonny, and Benny imagine what they would do if they had won. Benny and Nina reminisce about their childhood together, and Benny tries to reassure Nina about the future. During the celebration of Nina's return, Kevin announces that he has sold the business to pay Nina's tuition. Closing the car service will mean that Benny loses his job and Usnavi may lose his customers, which may mean the end of his business, too. The future of the whole neighborhood is thrown into doubt by this news. Usnavi, Vanessa, and Benny go to a club to forget their troubles. Nina tries to talk to Benny, but he blames Nina for losing his job. As everyone dances, there is a power blackout, and thugs loot the neighborhood. Amidst the chaos, Benny and Nina find one another and escape together. The first Act ends with both promise and doubt—will the neighborhood survive store closings? Will Nina and Benny's young romance survive her father's disapproval and the obvious differences in their heritage and education? Will Usnavi be able to keep open the bodega that has become the heart of the neighborhood, or will he decide to close it and return to the Dominican Republic? And who, exactly, has bought that winning $96,000 lottery ticket?

Notes on Washington Heights, NY The New York City neighborhood known as Washington Heights is in the northernmost part of Manhattan Island. It was named for Fort Washington, which was constructed at Manhattan’s highest point. Once a pastoral summer getaway for wealthy New Yorkers, Washington Heights was transformed almost overnight into an urban center when subway lines reached the area in the early twentieth century. It was then that the neighborhood saw its first wave of immigrants: the Irish, who had begun a mass migration to the United States after the Great Famine of 1845. European Jews followed between 1933 and 1941 as they sought refuge from the Nazis. During the 1950s and 1960s, Greeks fleeing the economic devastation caused by World War II and the Greek Civil War began to arrive. And in the 1960s, there was an influx of Puerto Rican and Cuban immigrants, seeking economic opportunity and political freedom. The migration of Dominicans to the United States began late in comparison to other Caribbean islanders, in large part due to the Dominican Republic’s political situation. Unlike Cubans, who fled to the U.S. after the rise of the communism, or Puerto Ricans, who had won U.S. citizenship in 1951, most Dominicans were not allowed to travel under the regime of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, the Dominican Republic’s brutal dictator. Although travel restrictions were lifted after Trujillo’s assassination in 1961, political oppression continued for decades. Thus, in the 1970s and 1980s, Dominicans

began emigrating to the United States in large numbers searching for freedom and opportunity. New York City, and particularly Washington Heights, became the most popular destination among Dominican emigrants. Today over fifty percent of the neighborhood’s population is of Dominican birth or descent, and another twenty percent identify as Puerto Rican, Cuban, or Mexican. Many businesses are Dominican-owned and drive the local economy. Walking down the street in Washington Heights, one is as likely to hear Spanish spoken as English. And the “endless wall of music” experienced by In the Heights creator Lin-Manuel Miranda as he walked the streets of his neighborhood growing up was infused not only with Hip Hop (born in the Bronx just over the river), but also Latin music of every genre. For many who have made the journey to live in a new land, negotiating the tension between the need to assimilate and the equally powerful need to preserve cultural identity can be difficult. Nowhere is this more in evidence than in Washington Heights where Dominican flags fly alongside the Stars and Stripes and where a mix of Spanish and English is spoken on every street corner. The entrepreneurial spirit of America is reflected in the ubiquitous small businesses that line the streets labeled with Spanish names. This intersection of cultures is both a celebration and a source of conflict with which every immigrant community must contend and with which every individual within that community must come to terms. It is a rite of passage. This is the celebration and the conflict at the core of In the Heights.

RAP AND HIP HOP

The Created Language of the Disenfranchised The narrator and central character of In the Heights, Usnavi, uses Rap to introduce himself, his world and the language of the show. I AM USNAVI AND YOU PROB’LY NEVER HEARD MY NAME REPORTS OF MY FAME ARE GREATLY EXAGGERATED EXACERBATED BY THE FACT THAT MY SYNTAX IS HIGHLY COMPLICATED CUZ I EMIGRATED FROM THE SINGLE GREATEST LITTLE PLACE IN THE CARIBBEAN… With this introduction, we’ve already learned a lot about the world we’re entering. Above all, we know that an intentional self-consciousness about language will be part of the journey. In a perfect marriage of form and content, the story about what happens on a Washington Heights street corner will be told in the forceful, poetic and sometimes brutal language of the street: Rap. The phenomenon of Rap and Hip Hop music could be described as the creation of both a language and an art form. Born in the Bronx section of New York City in the mid-1970’s, what was then called Disco Rap was the invention of the DJ’s of the time who began isolating the percussion breaks of songs during which an emcee (MC) would talk to the dancers, infusing the atmosphere with excitement. The DJ’s began to mix excerpts of music tracks with rhythmic scratching sounds and over this strong, driving background beat, the MC or “rapper” added extemporaneous rhyming spoken lines. These are the basic components of Hip Hop music today. Add break dancing and graffiti art and you have the cultural cocktail known as the Hip Hop movement.

She previously appeared in LC's production of The Little Mermaid and dedicates this performance to those who have never given up on her dream of performing! Danny Palomba (Class of 2013) is happy to be in his tenth LC production. Previous appearances include Honk!, Legally Blonde and The Little Mermaid. He enjoys playing the piano and guitar, making videos in his spare time, and is planning on attending Gonzaga University next fall. He dedicates his performance to his family & friends.

She has been dancing since she was 4 years old and hopes to become a chef and one day open her own bakery. Michaele' thanks her parents for always being there for her and riding along in all of the activities she does.

His theatrical appearances include The Little Mermaid, Give My Regards to Broadway, Aladdin, How I Became a Pirate, and Treasure Island. Ilan thanks his voice coach and Mr. Pschirrer and Mrs. Maguire for this opportunity. Gracias a mi familia por su amor y apoyo. Hannah Hudson (Class of 2013) is honored to be a part of her seventh show at LC after appearing in Guys and Dolls, Urinetown, Twelfth Night, Honk!, Legally Blonde, and The Little Mermaid. She is incredibly happy to be ending her LC musical theatre career with this amazing show. She dedicates her performance to her mom and dad, Hayley, Aaron, and Dre for all their love and support. Joe Johnson (Class of 2013) is beyond thrilled to be in his third LC show after Hairspray and The Crucible. He was in the orchestra for Legally Blonde and ran lights for The Little Mermaid. After being involved in Band and Theatre, he plans to pursue Psychology, Music, and Theatre in college. This performance is dedicated to all those who have supported him in his endeavors and put up with his craziness.

By the early ‘80’s the movement had a firm toehold in the popular music landscape. As an accessible outlet for artistic expression, the voice of inner city youth was being heard. Creatively, however, the form seemed to have run its course due to the limitations and similarities between songs of the disco and funk background beats. But new technology of the time allowed for more sophisticated musical accompaniment to develop including more complex layering of beats and sampling. At the same time, Rap lyrics became much more complex in their use of metaphor and inclusion of social messages. This watershed point in the evolution of the music was the end of “Old School” and the beginning of the “New School” music that gained huge mainstream success in the 80’’s. Using the vocabulary and the syntax of the street combined with rhyme and rhythm, Rap and Hip Hop are elevated to unique forms of musical poetry that give voice to the previously voiceless and disenfranchised. And while the music has been criticized for the use of profane and violent language, at the same time it can accommodate profound emotion. Somehow, it is the contrast of his vulnerability expressed through this tough sounding street Rap that makes Benny’s declaration of love near the end of the show so devastatingly romantic. FOR REAL THOUGH I THINK I MAYBE SORT OF LOVE YOU FOR REAL THOUGH MY SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS IS REAL LOW BUT I’LL DO WHAT I MUST FOR YOUR TRUST THIS AIN’T LUST THIS IS MUCH MUCH MORE! AND I’M AT YOUR DOOR! Throughout the life span of Rap and Hip Hop to date, there have been those who have claimed that this musical phenomenon is a passing fad. But at 30 years and going strong, Hip Hop has secured its place in popular music history.
