Letter from the CEO and Board Chair

The 2013-2014 Girl Scout year was one of growth and changes, and so we must first say THANK YOU to the thousands of dedicated volunteers, supportive parents, and longtime supporters for helping us become a better GSNI! In October, GSNI celebrated a new year with a new Chief Executive Officer, Fiona Cummings. Fiona has an incredible passion for Girl Scouts; she herself is a former Girl Guide from the United Kingdom, she raised her daughter in Girl Scouts in the Naperville area, and also put her two sons through Boy Scouts. Our brand new Rock Falls Service Center and Girl Scout store opened in February, with the community wholly embracing our new presence there. Since then, our members have enjoyed purchasing their Girl Scout supplies and meeting with staff and volunteers in a location much closer to home. Last summer we held our inaugural session of Camp CEO, a new kind of camp experience for high school girls. The girls learned about potential career interests, resume writing and interview skills, and how to professionally represent themselves online. At the end of camp, they were able to network with female role models at the first-ever Champions Dinner in Elgin. The girls (and the role models!) loved it so much, we’re looking forward an even better year of Camp CEO this summer. Due to the support of a few generous foundations, we’ve also seen some great improvements at our camps this year. Camp Dean in Big Rock received a brand new greenhouse and plant identification signs, so girls will be able to start growing and tending their own native plant species, trees, and shrubs this spring. At Mary Ann Beebe Center, we are creating programs-in-a-box that troop leaders and girls can use for fun, educational activities about nature and the environment. In September, we also held an open house at Far Horizons in Hanover and met lots of past and present camp supporters. Despite these successes, we and many other Girl Scout councils across the nation are facing declining membership. Competition for girls’ and parents’ time, lack of adult volunteer mentors, and changing community demographics mean that we must work even harder to ensure that all girls have access to world-class leadership opportunities through Girl Scouts. That’s why 2015 will be a year of intensive research and strategy surrounding parents’ and girls’ motivations for joining and staying in Girl Scouts, and then acting on those findings to implement winning programs and marketing. In March of 1912, Juliette Gordon Low gathered just a few girls to begin the Girl Scouts. Juliette’s outstanding leadership was matched by her stewardship when she converted the carriage house of her home into the first Girl Scout national headquarters, and she gifted the property to Girl Scouts in her will.

Juliette’s bequest was the beginning of planned giving to Girl Scouts. In her memory, the Juliette Gordon Low Society was established to thank and honor friends of Girl Scouting who choose to make Girl Scouts part of their legacies and a beneficiary of their estate plans.
