Lester Cemetery - 1825 This site displays photographs of the cemetery made starting c. 1960. The cemetery is located in Montgomery County, Virginia, south of the town of Riner, just off of State Route 8 on Route 602, N37° 1' 16.98", W80° 25' 1.56" his old cemetery is the resting place of John Lester (1752-1825) and his wife Catherine Plickenstalver (1759-1833). They had 11 children, 6 sons and 5 daughters. The only one of their children buried here is their youngest son, Hulen (1795-1888) who established his home near John and Catherine's. John II, James T., Abner A., William S., Susannah, Rhoda, Pamelia, and Catherine all moved nearby to what is now Floyd County. Mary married Isaac West and moved to Tennessee. Samuel married Nancy Cox and moved to Tennessee and thence to Alabama. Six of Hulen's children are buried here: Ira H. and wife, Amanda Ann Guy; Joshua P. and wife, Catherine Peterman; John Floyd and wife, Susan Chafin; Charles D. and wife, Mary E. Wright; Ellen; and James W. An infant granddaughter of Ira and Amanda Lester, Banie Lester, is buried beside Amanda. She was the third child of Albert Lester and Susan Altizer. A grandson, Augustus Lester, who died the day he was born is also buried here. These are the only know descendants of Ira and Amanda buried in this cemetery, but there are many illegible tombstones near Ira and Amanda that could also be their descendants. Additionally, Helm T., son of Joshua P., and Montie E., grandson of John Floyd, and Montie's first wife, Bertie Gay Richardson, are buried here. Posie Inez Lester, and Ida M. Lester, daughters of Charles D. and Mary Lester are also buried here. Octavia Lester, first wife of Hulen B. Lester, son of John Floyd Lester, and their son, Ottis S. are buried here. Octavia's twin sister, Sarah Malinda Lester, is also buried here. Octavia and Sarah are the daughters of Leftwich Lester and Christina Bishop. Leftwich was the son of James Lester, the second child of John Lester and Catherine Plickenstalver. I counted 47 grave sites of which 14 have unmarked stones or stones which are illegible. ohn and Catherine Lester had 11 children, 83 (known) grandchildren, and 460 (known) great-grandchildren. Their descendants migrated to West Virginia, Indiana, Tennessee, Missouri, Iowa, Idaho, Texas, Oregon and other states and number in the thousands.

4-Sarah M. Lester (Epperly) (Mar 8 1861-Jun 7 1910) Was the daughter of Leftwich Lester and Christiana Bishop. Leftwich was the son of James Lester and Cloe Wilson. James was the second child of John Lester and Catherine Plickenstalver. Sarah's twin sister, Octavia, is also buried here. They are the only known Lester's buried here that are not descended from Hulen Lester, the youngest son of John and Catherine. Octavia is listed with Hulen's descendants because she married her second cousin, Hulen Berdine, who is descended from Hulen.

A picture taken c. 1960 shows how nicely the cemetery was maintained when Bentley Lester, Hulen's great-grandson, owned the property on which the cemetery lies and was maintaining it.

Cemetery Care
Additional pictures on this site reveal that the cemetery is once again well maintained. Dale and Anita McDowell of Christiansburg began caring for the cemetery in 1990 and restored it to a very presentable appearance. Anita is a great-granddaughter of John Floyd Lester and Susan Chaffin, who are buried here. Anita and Dale retired from the cemetery care in 1999 at which time I obtained the services of Mark Dominesey of Christiansburg who cared for the cemetery until 2006. Helm was the son of Joshua and Catherine Lester. He married Laura E. Basham on Jan 24, 1900. Laura married Clay Roop, a widower, on Aug 8, 1917. She is buried in Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, Va.
James was the son of Hulen and Eleanor Lester. He was their eighth child. He died at age 15.

Samuel, Mary
These were the children of Joshua P. and Catherine Mary Wilson (Peterman) Lester. They all died in the diphtheria epidemic of 1863. They are buried side by side. A fourth child, George, died of typhoid fever at the age of 21. The sequence of graves is George, Samuel, Mary, and Christena .

They had 15 children (another source has 13), none of which are buried in this cemetery. Their headstones are separated by one unidentified grave, which is peculiar. But, Ira predeceased Amanda by 24 years, which may explain why they were not buried side by side.

Octave was the daughter of Leftwich Lester and Christine Bishop. She was the twin sister of Sarah Milinda Lester. They were the ninth and tenth children. She was the first wife of Hulen B. Lester who was the son of John Floyd Lester and Susan Chaffin, who are buried in this cemetery. Hulen B. Lester is buried in Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, Va. Hulen married 2) Nanzella Duncan on Oct 16, 1884. Most records have the spelling as Octavia.
Ottis was the son of Hulen B. Les Octave Lester. He went West to Io Abe Lester, his uncle, and was ki threshing machine accident. Isn't i he was brought back to this ceme burial?

They had two children, Ruby Lake Lester and Luther Evans (Buster) Lester. Bertie died 3 years after the marriage. Mont then married Woodie Reed Cooper, a widow. Woodie married a third time after Mont's death. The double head stone was placed at the time of Mont's death, but Woodie is not buried with him. She was buried in Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, Va..

Posie Inez Lester was the daughter of Charles D. and Mary Ellen (Wright) Lester. She was their fourth child. She married George Thomas Akers June 14, 1897. They had five children. She died at age 37. Her children were given homes by her relatives. It is not known why the spelling of her name is "Posey" on the tombstone, rather than "Posie."
Ida M. Lester was the daughter of Charles D. and Mary Ellen (Wright) Lester. She was their sixth child. She married G. David Bolen Nov 21, 1904 They had no children. She died at age 27.

They had no children and it is not clear that she lived with him for very long. She and her sister, Catharine, cared for their parents in their last years and Ellen lived with them.
Mary's parents are unknown. She was not quite two years old when she died.
