Lesson Plan for Media Literacy Production
Lesson Focus: What is the focus of the lesson? How will I teach it? This lesson focuses on the critical analysis of websites, using the Guiding Questions from the AUDIENCE side of the Media Triangle. In a whole-class setting, using a Venn diagram to record similarities and differences between two websites with similar content, students gain the necessary understanding to practise identifying the intended audience of two other websites on their own. Rationale: Why am I teaching this lesson? Anecdotal observations made during previous lessons show that several students still require additional support in identifying the production and text elements of certain media works that appeal to particular audiences. Assessment: How will I know when my students are successful? Information regarding the students’ degree of success will be provided by observing them as they deconstruct two pre-selected websites, and recording the assessment data using the following tools: • Anecdotal Record Sheet • Website Analysis Venn Diagram Checklist • Effective Media Work Checklist Prior Knowledge: What prior knowledge do my students need in order to be successful with the focus of this lesson? Prior to this lesson, students will need to: • bring in signed permission forms allowing them to use the Internet; • understand the characteristics of effective websites; • understand the Media Triangle; • have experience using Think-Pair-Share; • have experience filling in a Venn Diagram; • be able to work cooperatively in pairs.

Curriculum Expectations: What expectations will I address? Language: Media Literacy: Grade 6 Understanding Media Texts: Purpose and Audience 1.1 explain how a variety of media texts address their intended purpose and audience; Understanding Media Texts: Audience Responses 1.4 explain why different audiences might have different responses to media texts; Understanding Media Forms, Conventions, and Techniques: Conventions and Techniques 2.2 identify the conventions and techniques used in some familiar media forms and explain how they help convey meaning and influence or engage the audience; Creating Media Texts: Form 3.2 identify an appropriate form to suit the specific purpose and audience for a media text they plan to create, and explain why it is an appropriate choice; Healthy Living: Grade 6 • describe the benefits of healthy eating for active living; Social Studies: Canada and World Connections: Grade 6 • identify Canada’s connections with the United States through the media, trade, immigration, culture, technology, tourism, history, and geography; • describe distinguishing characteristics of a country in another region with which Canada has links (e.g., climate, physical features, political system, economic activities, international influence, celebrations).

Differentiated Instruction: How can I ensure that I am meeting the needs of all my students? Pair students who are inexperienced in using technology with students who have experience creating multimedia slide shows or HyperStudio stacks. Offer more advanced users of technology the possibility of creating a website for their Canadian Trading Partners media work. The website can be a single- or multi-page site, using webpage authoring software available at school. Modelled/Shared Lesson: Before: • Activate students’ prior knowledge by posing the following question: “What are your favourite websites and why?” • List names of sites and reasons why on a T-Chart. During: • Model the use of a Venn diagram to compare two websites that offer the same content to different audiences. Using the Guiding Questions from the AUDIENCE side of the Media Triangle, record similarities and differences between the following two websites: • the Ministry of Health promotion (www.mhp.gov.on.ca/english/default.asp) • Pause to PLAY (www.pausetoplay.ca) After: • Assign students 2 pre-selected websites to view and compare. Have students compare CG Kids Atlas Online at www.canadiangeographic.ca/cgkidsatlas/market.asp with Industry Canada's Trade Data Online at http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/sc_mrkti/tdst/engdoc/tr_homep.html • Have students practise recording similarities and differences on a Venn diagram. • Circulate and gather anecdotal assessment information. • Lead a whole-class sharing session of student findings. Collect Venn diagrams. • Remind students of the importance of keeping audience in mind when designing their upcoming multimedia work on their chosen trading partner. Independent Whole Group:

Refer to the Effective Media Work Checklist to guide the discussion. Record individual student progress on the Anecdotal Record Sheet. Discuss next steps with students, constantly referring to the Effective Media Work Checklist.
