Introduction | Lensing analysis of CLASH

The CLASH survey - Overview Primary science goals: • Map the distribution of dark matter in galaxy clusters using strong and weak gravitational lensing - verify consistency of cluster/mass analysis methods - test the concentration-mass relation and the DM inner density profile in galaxy clusters, and verify if they are incosistent with numerical predictions, as often claimed (Coe+2010, Broadhurst+2008, Newman+2010,Sand+2008)

• Detect and characterize high-redshift galaxies at z > 7 - find the first generation of galaxies and understand their role in the reionization process at 6 ~< z > light is deflected when propagates through an inhomogeneous gravitational field ● The light deflection angle is linearly dependent on the projected mass density

Strong Lensing ➞ accurate masses of the lens core: N conjugated multiple images Solve for the source position and for the lens potential

Weak Lensing ➞ accurate masses of the lens outskirts Statistical analysis of the distortion induced in the shape of background galaxies

CLASH for galaxy cluster cores | Lensing analysis of CLASH

CLASH science goals Primary science goals: • Map the distribution of dark matter in galaxy clusters using strong and weak gravitational lensing → 16 filters >> photometric redshifts for most of the lensed images (typical magnitude 25 < I < 28) → Sample size allows measurements of the average of cluster concentrations with a ~10% accuracy: verify claims of cluster concentrations higher than numerical predictions

→ Optimal cluster sample/datasets to be compared with numerical results (see Meneghetti+2010,2008)

CLASH for high-z objects | Lensing analysis of CLASH

CLASH science goals Primary science goals: • Detect and characterize some of the most distant galaxies discovered at z > 7 Massive lenses as powerful gravitational telescopes: • Gravitational lensing (de)magnifies background sources > high SNR detections of more, faint high-z objects → most faint (AB < 26.5) high-z galaxy candidates have been found in cluster fields (Zheng et al. 2009, Bradley+2011, Richard+2011)

First detections of high-z objects: • double images of a z~6 galaxy identified in the core of Abell 383 thanks to the new CLASH data (Richard+2011), confirmed with Keck spectroscopy • Unlensed MH=27.2 ± 0.05, magnification factor = 11.4 ± 1.9 (2.65 ± 0.17 mag)

Summary | Lensing analysis of CLASH

The CLASH survey - Summary ➟ Current preliminary results: • indications that the DM inner slope is consistent with numerical predictions • measured concentrations are higher than predicted • 5 SN detected so far - more expected!

➟ Definitive results will be obtained after the observation cycle is completed: • precise photometric redshifts for galaxies having MF775W < 26, including hundreds of strongly lensed objects • tightly constrained cluster mass profiles over a large range of scales, thanks to the inclusion of WL constraints • constraints on the baryonic gas distribution from mm- and X-ray- imaging • robust measurements of their central density concentrations •detection of dozens relatively bright (m < 26 AB) galaxies at high-z (z > 7) • detections of dozens of z > 1 Type Ia supernovae that, combined with SNe Ia detected by the CANDELS program, will provide new constraints on cosmology
