This course adopts a playful approach to practical instruction, teaching children basic skills as well as the French vocabulary that goes with them. Charcoal is an ancient dry medium, which was utilized in many cultures throughout centuries. Nowadays charcoal is still highly appealing to artists. In our classroom we will explore the versatility of the charcoal. We will implement art techniques such as hatching, rubbing and lifting (erasing) into our experimentation. We will work with compressed charcoal, vine charcoal and charcoal pencil. Starting with the basics, depicting fruits and drapery, your child will conclude the class with a charcoal drawing of your home based on a photograph. Your child will time travel through historical periods while learning about important artists who produced charcoal drawings. We will investigate prehistoric cave drawings, renaissance studies, and the work of Dürer, Degas, Matisse, Picasso and contemporary artists. Your child will learn through doing, gaining visual and linguistic fluency in the field of charcoal drawing.

La Traviata offers one of the repertoires’ most striking portraits of a woman, Marie D'Agoult, the so-called Dame aux Camélias made famous by Dumas Fils. Benoît Jacquot directs Diana Damrau, cruel and sublime in this gripping masterpiece of love and sacrifice. On meurt souvent à l'opéra, un peu moins au ballet… Inspired by L'Abbé Prévost’s legendary heroes, Kenneth MacMillan reconstructs the tragic story of the sensual, yet naive creature who is more victim than architect of her own fate. The choreographer constructs his ballet on a mosaic of extracts from Massenet finding in the music the drama and romanticism necessary for this grand fresco in dance. Cast: Laëticia Pujol, Mathieu Ganio, Stéphane Bullion Conductor: Martin Yates, Choregraph: Kenneth MacMillan

Il Trovatore / Opéra © JP Delagarde

Saturday, May 7, 1:00 p.m. Guiseppe Verdi (2016, 175 min) 4 acts

A true gem of the operatic repertoire, Il Trovatore is one of Verdi's most beloved masterpieces. The world famous Russian soprano Anna Netrebko carries this enraptured music to new heights in the role of Leonora, intended by Verdi to be a secondary role, who inherited the opera's most famous arias, including "Tacea la notte," "D'amor sull'ali rosee" and "Di te! di te! Scordarmi di te!." Cast: Ludovic Tézier, Anna Netrebko, Ekaterina Semenchuk Conductor: Daniele Callegari, Director: Alex Ollé

Nov. 3, 6:30 p.m. Exhibition on display through December 22 Free Admission · In French and English Writer and artist Raymond Fontanet, known as Renefer (1876 – 1957), was mobilized to serve in the French military in 1914 and, throughout the war, always carried pencils and a sketchbook in his hands. Renefer’s works included illustrated correspondence with his daughter — a unique testimony from a father to a daughter about life in the trenches. This bilingual exhibition presents the correspondence and works of Renefer during the Great War with each panel including text depicting the life of Renefer as an artist and soldier. This exhibition is designed from an artistic and educational point of view as photos taken by soldiers are connected to reference the works of Renefer, offering an opportunity to understand how he depicts and transcends the reality of a soldier’s life. Awarded the label "Centenaire" by the French Government, this exhibit is organized by the Association Renefer, the Cultural Service at the Consulate General of France in Chicago and the Department of French at DePaul University with the support of the Institut Français and the Mission Centennaire 14 – 18 in Paris.

Exhibitions open during our regular business hours, please enter via 810 N. Dearborn.

celebrate the French table

Tuesday, November 17, 7:00 p.m.

Wine is inseparable from the famous French art of living. Come and experiment an evening unlike any other when jazz and wine come together. Pick up the tempo and raise your glass to The Bridge, featuring an ensemble of French and American musicians, with a selection of wine by Viktorija.

The Bridge project, led by music anthropologist Alexandre Pierrepont, brings together France and Chicago through jazz. With French vocalist Claudia Solal, who's been working for several years on freely reinterpreting major works of literature through jazz, the ensemble features Benoît Delbecq (piano, prepared piano), Tomeka Reid (cello), and Katherine Young (bassoon, effects). Jazz, electroacoustic music, contemporary improvisation, and pop meet in ANTICHAMBER MUSIC — or Improvisations for an Imaginary Quartet — inspired by James Joyce's 1907 poetry collection "Chamber Music". This program is part of à la carte week, a celebration of contemporary French food, wine and art of living.
