Why listen to him? Transformational leadership is of importance in Bruce Avolio’s thinking. Bruce Avolio has worked a lot with leaders in an extreme context. Whether it’s a financial trader who could make a decision that could cost their organization a hundred million dollars, or members of military units, police, SWAT or firefighters. Avolio stresses on a leader’s ability to reduce uncertainty. A lot of things contribute to how well a leader performs when the extreme conditions set in. How authentic is the leader? How transparent? Are they someone that followers trust? Are they a cement head or are they somebody who has big ears and listens to people? Are they people who ask questions as opposed to provide statements? Are they ethical or not? Are they abusive?

Why listen to her? Her current research revolves around the promotion of creativity leadership, how to generate creative / innovative organizations and what management and organization achieves when staff are given space to be creative both in the private and public sectors.

individual worker.

Stefan Söderfjell Who is he? Stefan Söderfjäll is one of the founders of Ledarskapscentrum, and holds a Ph.D. in psychology. He is also an author, consultant and researcher with the mission of bridging science and practice in the field of work.

Farida Rasulzada Who is she? Farida Rasulzada is a researcher and lecturer in psychology at Lund University.

can create better conditions for the individual worker.

Why listen to him? Stefan will talk about leadership and the importance of emphasizing basic human needs when leading organizations. The basal psychological needs of a human being are to feel autonomous, competent and belonging. By taking these needs into consideration as a leader, one

Annika Ushio Who is she? Annika Ushio has a background in fine arts and craft furniture making. Now she works in the digital sphere designing large scale software experiences at Microsoft. Medium aside, her passion is rooted in the point of intrigue between people and their environments, both physical and digital. Why listen to her? Annika’s talk will be more of a “think about ____” talk than a “how to”. She will talk about the state of where we are in the world of communication and technology and how everyone – not just designers – designs the world around them through behavior and is thus responsible for the evolution of these services and their use.

Anna Borgeryd Who is she? Anna Borgeryd is a creative strategist with a PhD in conflict management and part of the fifth generation at the helm of the family business Polarbröd. Chairman of the Board of this Northern Swedish hydro-powered industrial bakery, she studies macro trends and future prospects for “Uthållig försörjning”, that is, the sustainable supply of food and other necessities, which requires that we provide in a way that does not breach the biophysical limits of the biosphere. Anna recently participated at a workshop arranged by the Swedish Government’s Future Commission. Why listen to her? Growing up in the family business, Anna has learned a lot about creative disagreement. Her mother and father 6

rarely started out in agreement about what path to take. But when they finally agreed on a plan, it was usually a good one, and if not, this solid process left them with an ability to quite quickly identify the second best option.

Working in food supply, Anna stresses the distinction between what she calls “Tier 1 sustainability” – when the prevailing economic logic is in harmony with ecology – and the costly “Tier 2 sustainability”. This means a choice between economic success and the environment. When goods and services are produced in a sustainable way, they cost more, and we will be forced to consume less. Industrial productivity and economics of scale will have to be weighed against higher distribution costs when our transportation is entirely powered by renewable energy.

University. Previously, she worked for 12 years for Nokia, most recently as Head of Design Research & Foresight.

Michael West Who is he? Prof. Michael West, Lancaster University. His areas of research interest are team and organizational innovation and effectiveness, particularly in relation to the organization of health services.

Anna Valtonen Who is she? Prof. Anna Valtonen, Rector of Umeå Institute of Design (UID), Umeå

Psychology of Work and Organizations (2010) and Effective Teamwork (2004), now translated into 12 languages. He has also published over 200 articles for scientific and practitioner publications, as well as chapters in scholarly books.

Evelina Wahlqvist Who is she? Evelina Wahlqvist is a living combination of creativity expert, futurist and devoted yogini, a fact that won’t pass unnoticed in her TEDxtalk. While having her background in Economic Geography as a researcher at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, she become known to the public as the “Creativity Researcher” after releasing commended research reports on the topic of the growing Creative Economy. Currently, she’s on a break from university life, working as a public speaker and motivator of conscious change. Why listen to her? What got you here, won’t take you there. That’s the subtle message of TEDx Umeå

Innovation

Evelina Wahlqvist, encouraging us to take charge and responsibility of our creativity. While creativity is being hyped as something particularly important for this very era in world history, Evelina reminds us that creativity is fundamental to life. We’ve always been creating. We are always creating. Whether we’re aware of it or not. Hence, when we leave the question of whether we are creative or not behind, a new and more important question arises: How do we use our creativity? The past century has taught us many important lessons on the causes and consequences of the human capacity to create. Hopefully, this can become the century of conscious creativity. In this talk, Evelina guides us through three contemporary trends, forecasting how we will use our creativity in the future.

Creativity/Innovation Afternoon session 1 14:00 - 15:30

continuous success. History has given us an endless amount of lessons to learn and patterns to follow - what environment creativity thrives in, what mindsets are needed and which collaborations that work better than others. But is creativity really the holy grail we should be striving for, or is there something else?

Alf will take his examples from the world of restaurants, where chefs manage to stay at the cutting edge of creativity. At the same time, they deliver a dish to a customer at top quality and with top performance every time. This is something the rest of us can learn from, and through Alf’s speech, we might do just that.

Emanuel Dohi Who is he? Emanuel Dohi is the CEO and Creative Director at Dohi Sweden. Originally from Transylvania, this 33-year-old serial entrepreneur now successfully runs a game company, a start-up accelerator and a full-service digital creative agency. Emanuel sees himself and his 37 artists in the multidisciplinary environment of Dohi Sweden as modern pioneers, claiming land in a new digital landscape. Everyone seeks the key that will unlock its hidden secrets which will ensure

Erik Nissen Johansen Who is he? Erik Nissen Johansen is a Norwegianborn artist, educated in Florence, Italy, and now living in Gothenburg, Sweden. In the early 90’s, he founded Stylt Trampoli, now a successful business in the hospitality industry. His work in the hospitality industry focuses on designing the interior of for example hotels and restaurants; Klaus K in Helsinki, Le Rouge in Stockholm and Radisson Sonya in St Petersburg among others. Erik uses storytelling as a concept when working with interior design. For Radisson Sonya he chose Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky as an inspiration, having TEDx Umeå

9

#tedxumea

heard that it was the best guide to St Petersburg available. For Le Rouge he wanted to create a feeling of a turn-ofthe-century French restaurant, similar to Moulin Rouge in Paris.

Why listen to him? In January, Erik will talk about the power of storytelling, and the use of stories to create an effect, no matter if it’s a true or fictive story, simple or extravagant. The principle for storytelling is that when interior design is telling a story, it’s more memorable than regular advertising. Thus, it is also more successful in attracting customers – since the customers themselves will be advertising and spreading the word when they leave. He will dwell on Umeå, and which forgotten stories from Umeå that are worthy to tell the world.

Stina Jonsson Who is she? Stina Jonsson works as an interaction designer at IDEO. She has had the opportunity to work on a diverse set of projects ranging from consumer 10

TEDx Umeå

products to highly specialized and complex tools for professionals as well as projects ranging from strategic, ambiguous and exploratory to more implementation focused. Stina’s knowledge of human cognition and social psychology heavily informs her work.

Stina holds a master’s degree in Interaction Design from the Umeå Institute of Design in Sweden. Prior to finding her way to the design world, Stina studied at Umeå University where she graduated with a master’s degree in Cognitive Psychology. Why listen to her? As the internet continues to play a significant role in most facets of our lives, how are we equipped to handle our increasingly complex digital world? Information overload is a term often used when talking about the internet. In the physical world however, we seem to have little problem processing exponentially more information. Could inadequate digital tools at our disposal rather than in the amount of information be the cause?  Psychomimicry is the examination of the human mind, its models, systems, processes, and elements to emulate or take inspiration from to improve our online and digital experiences. Inspiration can be drawn from theories of social psychology, perception, attention, identity and memory. Stina Jonsson would like to share concrete examples of how constructs of memory such as working memory and longterm memory could influence the next generation of the web.

Helge Tennö

Nomo Daco Who are they? Nomo Daco stands for Nordic Movement Dance Company, and is a collective based in Umeå. They work with contemporary dance on a local, national and international level. The talk at TEDx will be performed by Tove Skeidsvoll, an award winning graduate from the Ballet Academy in Stockholm, and Linus Andersson from Lampray, an Umeå based film production company. Why listen to them? What can happen within the context of a seemingly shared unity, and how can something change the energy within a room? Tove is curious about the building blocks of space, time and movement. Together with Linus Andersson she adds a contribution to this ongoing work of many creators within different disciplines.

Who is he? Helge Tennö is the author of several strategic and creative online resources. He has held positions from creative to strategic director, business developer to graphic designer, in advertising, design and IT. He works crossdiscipline exploring new products and business models in design, advertising, PR and service design. Why listen to HIM? Helge has, for the last nine years, been a profound proponent of sharing all original ideas with the online community, asking; what happens if your ideas are not protected and owned, but shared and open? He’s an international speaker discussing the future of digital as it moves from destination to integration, from platforms to everyday life.

Winner of the 2011 Svenska Ölfrämjandets Guldpin and one of the founders and vice-chairman of the Scandinavian Beer Writers Association. Why listen to him? ‘The Swedish craft beer revolution. Are stor stark’s days finally numbered?’ In his talk Darren will tackle what he believes are two of the most disgusting words in the Swedish language and explain why he knows the days of “stor stark” (“big strong”) are finally numbered. He’ll discuss how the exciting new wave of craft breweries starting up all over Sweden today are a backlash to boring industrial beers and why they represent a seismic shift in people’s tastes towards beers.
