LEADER OF THE MONTH

Evey New is a year 12 Lambton High School Prefect. She is a strong leader both within the school and in the community. As a prefect Evey attended the 2015 Halogen National Young Leaders day which she found beneficial in her role as a prefect. She has achieved academic excellence medals from years 7-12 and also received ROSE awards from years 7-12. In 2013 Evey was presented the Principals Award. Evey has been active in supporting and organising various fundraisers like The Nepal Disaster Relief, 40Hr Famine and currently she is helping in the planning of RU OK Day. Evey is a keen sportswoman and has competed at The Australian Open Swimming Championships in 2014 and 2015 in Brisbane and Sydney. She has previously been Captain and Vice-Captain for the local swimming club and has assisted in coaching. Evey has also volunteered at local sporting events like The Colour Run. Evey hopes to attend university and study Medicine.

LEADERSHIP

SECRETARY FOR A DAY On the 27th and 28th of July, Andrew Gay and Ellie Bright had the opportunity to participate in the Secretary for a Day Program at the Department of Education in Sydney. Andrew shadowed Dr Michelle Bruniges in her role as Secretary NSW Department of Education. “During the first day, I got the chance to attend the launch of Education Week at The Jannali High School, where high profile figures such as the NSW Governor, His Excellency, the Honourable David Hurley, and NSW Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione were guest speakers. It was a great experience meeting these men and hearing their stories about how public education played a role in their life. I then returned to the Bridge St Office where I shadowed the secretary. It gave me an insight into the nature of a higher order workplace and the importance of leadership skills in senior roles”. Ellie shadowed Mrs Jane Thorpe in her role as Director of Employee Performance and Conduct (EPAC). “EPAC manages all allegations of misconduct against staff of the Department of Education. It also includes designing teacher improvement programs and assisting principals to manage issues when staff breaches the Code of Conduct.

Lambton Leader August 2015

During the day I had the opportunity to meet the fifty-five different employees that work for EPAC including lawyers, investigators, teachers and police officers. During this first day it was a great insight into the Department of Education and the different roles that go on behind the scenes”. Whilst they were in Sydney, Ellie and Andrew had the chance to meet another eighteen other students from all over the State that had different roles in the Department of Education during the day.

This program was extremely beneficial and such an amazing opportunity to have been involved with. It was a rewarding experience meeting the participants and the senior officers at the Department of Education. Ellie and I would like to thank Mr Rosser and Mrs Hayden and for their organisational skills and support in regards to the Secretary for a Day Program. Andrew Gay and Ellie Bright, Presidents of the SRC

CLIMATECAM STUDENT AND TEACHER TRAINING WORKSHOP Chloe Doyle, Rhett Prado and Monique Rosser gave a presentation on Green Day activities and organisation at the ClimateCam Student and Teacher Training Workshop at the Wetlands on 6 August. They addressed the topic “holding an environmental event at your school”. The purpose was to inform students and teachers from local schools about Green Day at Lambton. They presented a PowerPoint on the curriculum activities that lead up to the day as well as those that occur on Green Day.

“Meeting the students was a great way to share ideas about how other schools run different functions and activities through their SRC. By completing team building activities it was a great way to create new friends that we will be keeping in touch with as there is more to come from the Wellbeing Forum we attended on Tuesday the 28th of July. This forum had different activities and seminars that presented different information on wellbeing in all public operated schools in NSW. This was a great chance to see the work the Department of Education is doing and is hoping to achieve during the next few years”.

Chloe, Rhett and Monique were excellent ambassadors for the school. The experience was an opportunity for the students to develop their communication, leadership and teamwork skills.

The prefects and SRC collected a gold coin donation at the beginning of the day and raised $712.

JEANS FOR GENES Students and staff wore jeans on Friday 7 August to support Jeans for Genes. Since 1994 Jeans for Genes has raised over $62 million which was used in medical research to discover cures for conditions affecting children such as cancer, epilepsy and a range of genetic defects. Funding has achieved the following – 

Found a single genetic defect that causes cleft lip and palate

Identified the components of telomerase, which is important for treating 85% of all cancers.

Partnered with the Children’s Hospital Westmead on a cure for genetic liver disease

Discovered a new class of drugs for treating epilepsyonation at the beginning of the day

YEAR 12 2016 - REACHING INDIVIDUAL POTENTIAL MENTOR PROGRAM Students in Year 11 are currently in the process of selecting Mentors for the Reaching Individual Potential (RIP) Program for Term 4 2015 and 2016. RIP (otherwise known as mentoring), is a schoolbased scheme which aims to maximise the student’s performance in Year 12, culminating in the Higher School Certificate. It has been found that by fostering certain study skills and habits, improved learning can take place. The program encourages students to set realistic goals and to work towards achieving them with the assistance and guidance of a teacher mentor. It is also designed to provide 3

senior students with the support needed to achieve excellence in the HSC. Every Yr. 12 student at Lambton High School selects a teacher to be their mentor for the year. Teachers volunteer to be a mentor and this is not calculated in to teaching time. What does a Mentor do? Mentors:  advise, coach, counsel, teach and model successful behaviours. These roles vary depending upon the needs and abilities of the student;  improve academic skills by helping with organisation of school work and the use of appropriate resources;  assist with goal setting;  explore the world of employment and help with planning of a possible career path; and  broaden knowledge by providing opportunities to explore new situations  the student is also encouraged to seek help from their mentor when needed. Throughout Year 12 sessions in mentoring are offered on studying, getting ready for exams, reflecting on exam performance, applying for university, accessing BOS information, answering extended response questions, stress management, lectures and participation in the Elevate Education program. Mentor sessions are scheduled on Wednesdays during assembly time. Yr. 11 students were asked to select mentors for their HSC year by 29th August. The program will begin in Term 4 of this year.

ROBOCUP On the 6th August Lambton High School's first robotic athletes entered regional competition at Newcastle University's Forum. Many hours of training and preparation at school proved valuable in the heat of robotic battle. The Robocup teams were made up of year 8 students with an interest in the area of robotics. They were presented with changing courses of obstacles that their individually designed robots had to manoeuvre around, controlled by programs developed by the students themselves. The teams ranked 14th, 18th and 21st in a field of 34 teams. These results are very pleasing considering this is the first year of competition in this event for Lambton High School. The day was enjoyed by all the students with a good deal of experience gained for the next regional competition. I would like to thank the students who participated and represented our school in an exemplary fashion. Many other forms of robotics were witnessed by the students with many expressing the desire to 4

return to compete in different formats, for example, robotic soccer. The day was hosted and supported by volunteers from industry and universities, some having had experience as competitors in Robocup in their own school years. These people now have careers in robotics and mechatronics and are keen to see younger people enter the work force in this emerging field of work. Our representatives were Oscar Slatter Matthew Hayes Cameron James Jake O'Loughlin Angus Graham Jimmy Chung Cameron Gaddes Fahad Al Maraee Ethan Hodge Wesley Todhunter Trace Evans Brock Linsell William De Lore Elliot Yates Kelvin Gurung I would also like to thank the wonderful parent drivers for assisting us in making it to and from the competition venue, Ms Julie Dalgiesh, and Mrs Robyn De Lore. Looking forward to the next event. Mr McCudden

SPORT REPORT The month of August has once again seen Lambton HS sporting teams and students record a number of achievements. We continue to have various students achieve representative status in their chosen sports along with several other sporting events having occurred in recent times. The Open Girls Football Team has been the most dominant Lambton HS sporting team over the last few months. After comprehensively defeating Merewether HS in the Hunter Region Final and winning their Round of 16 match against Castle Hill, the team was pitted against Sydney South winners Woolooware HS. The team travelled to the Sutherland Shire in an attempt to qualify for the NSWCHS Semi-Final. Despite having the better chances in the first half, the team trailed 10 at the break. Woolooware made it 2-0 before Lambton was able to claw a goal back through REMEMBER – For all the latest Creative and Performing Arts Faculty news go to our Facebook page.
