From the Headteacher March was peppered with unseasonably cold weather, but this did not chill our spirits or put us off our learning. Pupils in Year 3 made us very proud at the Dance Festival on 7th March, performing on a professional stage at The Harlequin Theatre, Redhill. Well done Year 3, you showed poise, control and excellent concentration, way beyond your years! See the article on page 8. Science investigations dominated the curriculum from 12th to 16th March for British Science Week when our pupils were all ‘super scientists’. From Year 1, where they looked at which material is best for Flat Stanley’s umbrella, to Year 6 who became ‘slimeologists’ for the week! Please see the article on page 2 written by our Science Governor. Book week at Langshott was 19th to 23rd March when we shared our love of books by dressing up as our favourite book characters and by joining between year groups to read to each other. Thank you to parents for all the effort you made to make the children look so spectacular in their costumes and to those parents and grandparents who were able to join us on Friday afternoon for our family reading session. This week we waved off our Year 4 pupils who embarked on their visit to Hindleap Warren, where they were to spend three days and two nights away developing life skills such as teamwork and resilience. We can’t wait until next term to hear all about their escapades when Year 4 will share at assemblies to the school and to their parents.

Finally, staffing news. Our Langshott extended family continues to grow! I am pleased to report that Mrs Cybuch (Amethyst class teacher) gave birth to a baby boy this month, weighing in at 6lb 11oz. This term we sadly say goodbye to Mrs Patel (Sapphire class teacher) who embarks upon her maternity leave; she will be replaced by Miss McElrea, who will teach Sapphire class for the summer term. We wish Mrs Patel all the very best for the birth and we can’t wait to see her twins. Good luck! Wishing you all a wonderful Easter break. I look forward to seeing you all again on Monday 16th April for the start of the summer term. Mrs Mackintosh Page 1

A Note from the Governors – My Visit to Science Week As the Link Governor for Science, it was an enormous pleasure to visit the school during Science Week. Pupils were fully engaged in their Science learning and were clearly enjoying the activities that they were taking part in. This was evident from Year 1 who were investigating three areas 1) which aeroplane is the best, 2) how to blow the biggest bubble, 3) which material is best for Flat Stanley’s umbrella, up to Year 6 who became ‘slimeologists’ who were persevering to create the best slime polymer. It was great to see children using their skills of prediction and hypothesising whilst carrying out various investigations. The pupils were challenged through differentiated questioning within class discussion and group work and also challenged to use scientific vocabulary in their answers. It was pleasing also to see the children putting their mathematical skills into practice by recording data in tables. I also observed the children skilfully using scientific equipment and resources to carry out their own experiments, including thermometers, measuring cylinders, stopwatches and magnets. As I journeyed up the school, it was evident that the children were progressing well and becoming more autonomous in their learning as they had more control over their choice of resources and how to conduct the activity. Further challenge was seen through the topic sheets which suggested a level of challenge from bronze, to silver and then gold. Thank you to all the teachers and pupils for making me feel so welcome and showing me such superb work. Here are some photos showing some of the great Science learning…

Another Note from the Governors Dear Parents, As we approach the final term of the year, we have an exciting term ahead as the first Year 6 of the school approach their SATs tests. As Governors, this is a key milestone for Langshott Primary as we finally see the school in its full primary status and listed amongst the other primary schools across the nation. We now have an important task on our hands to look at the long term strategic direction for the school, now we have reached full Primary School status. To support the school we continue to work as a team, making sure that a good quality education is provided for all pupils. As a governing body we regularly visit the school to monitor the effectiveness of the teaching and we see some great teaching in action and great behaviour and effort from the children. This also extends to the children's behaviour outside of school where I had the privilege to watch the children from Year 1 behave impeccably as they visited Gatwick Airport on a recent school trip. We meet regularly as a governing body and we review the financial performance of the school, ensuring money is spent effectively for the pupils to get the best education possible. We also monitor other aspects of the school, for example, how the school manages the appraisal process for the staff and we conduct health and safety walks. On behalf of the Governing Body, I would like to thank Mrs Mackintosh and her fantastic team of staff for working so hard to provide the best education and environment for our pupils. I would also like to wish you all a nice relaxing Easter break and look forward to the warmer weather the summer term brings. Alex Carter, Co-opted Governor

KS1 School Council Over the past couple of months, we have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all the amazing School Councillors from Key Stage 1. During our many monthly meetings, we have come up with a lot of fabulous ideas about a variety of topics like healthy eating and many others. Some of them include: a fruit bar outside; always having the option of fruit for dessert; having a healthy eating challenge and dips for any vegetables we decide to have on the side for lunch. We hope to keep coming up with even more amazing ideas in future meetings that will change the school in positive ways. Hopefully, these ideas will be integrated into or school society once approved by Mrs Mackintosh and her team of teachers. In the future, we hope fellow parents will be able to notice what our stunning School Councillors have done for the schools well-being. Kind regards, Elyan Biggs - Deputy Head Boy Madeline Zaloumis - Deputy Head Girl

KS2 School Council Last month, in our School Council meeting, we were talking about how we can make Langshott a healthier place. We collected ideas from our School Council team and discussed our favourites. They included: smoothies to sell after school, a fruit stand, an award for healthy packed lunches, healthy eating posters to be displayed around the school and fruit salad as a choice of pudding (for school dinner). We would like to put these ideas into action and we look forward to doing so. In our most recent School Council meeting, we were carrying on with the healthy eating theme and were creating posters to display around our school. We thought about how to promote a balanced diet and how to appeal to all children in the school. Therefore, we included pictures and fun challenges so it was really successful. We can’t wait to display our work! Thank you to our School Councillors and minute keepers: Karli, Sienna, Charlotte, Olivia, Lauren, Kiera, Callum, Henry, Ellie and Loredana. By Luke Smith and Sophie Dean (Head Boy and Head Girl)

Early Years Library Visit On Friday 16th March, the Early Years children had the opportunity to visit our local library in Horley. They enjoyed a carousel of activities including using the self-check-out machines, making bunting and reading a selection of books from the children’s section. The children learnt about how to become a member of the library and the exciting selection of books available to them. It was lovely to hear the children discuss their experience as they walked to and from the library. Thank you to all the parent helpers for volunteering and making our trip possible.

Reception is Cheeping!

Some cheeping noises have been coming from our Reception classrooms recently! We have chicks! As part of our learning on the life cycles, we have been looking at chicks hatching from eggs. What better way to learn than to see it in real life, hence we recently took delivery of some eggs from The Happy Chick Company. We have been observing the eggs wobble and hearing cheeping from within the egg. We have been asked to cluck to the chicks so they think we are its mummy and, amazingly, the chicks cheep back! They are now all hatched and are beautiful bundles of yellow fluff. This has been an inspirational experience that has encouraged even the most reluctant learner! Mr Thompson, EYFS Leader

Science Week 2018 This year’s theme for Science week was ‘explore and discover’. The whole school took part in a range of activities that allowed them to develop their science skills through exploring and discovering. The children were predicting, questioning and explaining throughout the week. We also all looked at people who have explored parts of our planet and even the Solar system, such as Neil Armstrong, Oral Doherty and Charles Darwin. At the end of the week, the children shared their learning with each other by setting out their experiments and records of their work. The children then went around each class to see what each year group had been exploring. “During Science Week, KS2 did lots of interesting experiments, such as expanding gummy bears with water; making slime; recreating a mini version of the greenhouse effect and testing materials. In KS1, they also did experiments; colouring flowers with colourful water; looking at travel and making gliders. It was a brilliant week to test a range of new things. We loved looking at all of the different experiments on Friday, it was so much fun! Thank you Ms Pull for organising it!” By Karlie and Isla (Year 5)

KS1 News Year 2 News For your information, the Year 2 SATs will be running in the weeks of Monday 7th May to Monday 21st May inclusive. A selection of Maths questions will be made available to you on the Year 2 section of the school website for use at home, should you wish to use them during the holidays. All the Year 2 children have worked incredibly hard throughout the spring term and have made great progress, so please make sure to enjoy the Easter holidays. Please continue to read with your child over the Easter break, focussing on reading comprehension as well as fluency in reading. Year 2 Team Mathematics News Maths Workshop: On Thursday 15th March 2018, a group of children from across KS2 were invited to take part in a ‘Maths Investigation’ workshop. The children were presented with a selection of activities which were designed to challenge them and make them approach problems from different angles. All of the children who attended showed great enthusiasm and resilience throughout the morning. They worked extremely well together in working through the problems and developing concise, logical arguments. A special mention must go to Alex Ballard and Isla Owen from Year 5 who both chose a more challenging, open-ended investigation. They really enjoyed working together to explore the concept of ‘variation’ in Mathematics, using a clearly thought out, systematic approach to tackle the problem. To finish, they then delivered an outstanding presentation to the rest of the group to explain their findings! A huge well done to all the boys and girls who attended! Look out for the next workshop in the summer term … Useful Mathematics Website: In each monthly newsletter, you will now find a link to a useful Mathematics website for you to use at home. The first one in our March newsletter is for a website called ‘Math Salamanders’. The website contains free worksheets on a variety of primary school Mathematics topics. This is a US-based website, therefore you will need to understand how to convert the US school year system to the UK equivalent: US UK K1 Reception K2 Year 1 st 1 Grade Year 2 2nd Grade Year 3 3rd Grade Year 4 th 4 Grade Year 5 5th Grade Year 6 Website: https://www.math-salamanders.com/index.html Langshott News

Maths Challenge: Each month, you will now find a Maths challenge for you to try at home. There will be an easier option and a more challenging option. Easier Some Tripods and Bipods flew from planet Zeno. There were at least two of each of them. Tripods have 3 legs. Bipods have 2 legs. There were 23 legs altogether. How many Tripods were there? How many Bipods? Find two different answers.

More Challenging Last year my age was a square number. Next year it will be a cube number. How old am I? How long must I wait until my age is both a square number and a cube?

Mathematician of the Month: Commencing in the summer term, one child from each class will be selected at the end of each month as the class ‘Mathematician of the Month’. That child will receive a special Marvellous Me message to celebrate their success. The recipient of this award will not necessarily be the child who gets all the answers right in class! It could be a child who is showing more resilience in their approach to problem solving or who has made good progress. Mrs D Watanabe, KS1 & Mathematics Leader

Book Week & KS2 Author Visit on Monday 19th to Friday 24th March, Langshott Primary School received some strange pictures. These pictures were designed for a series of mystery books written by Harris Burdick. Once each class had revealed their image, they had to write their own interpretation of the picture as a story. Someone else who had to write a story based on them was Burdick’s publisher, Wonders. However, after promising he would bring the stories along the next day, Burdick never came back. The next day it was the same and the day after that. That wasn’t the only mystery, what were the stories that never arrived? Langshott was set the challenge to write these unknown stories just as Wonders had to. Would you be up to the challenge? By Isabelle Wise (Pearl Class) On the 22nd March, Year 5 and Year 6 were given the amazing opportunity to meet the author of The Curse of the Highwayman and The Highwayman’s Revenge, Cath Howe. Amazingly, lots of us had already read these books as they are available on Bug Club. During the workshop, we talked a lot about Highwayman how they moved, what they owned and even read a section of The Curse of the Highwayman. We learnt about how Highwayman stopped carriages and said, “Stand and deliver,” then, “Your money or your lives”. Also, we learnt about how they would steal goods from travellers and then, sadly, kill them. After, we tried moving around the hall how a Highwayman would, silently, without making a sound. Then, we sat down and discussed what a Highwayman would own, this was challenging as Highwayman always moved around so not to be found. We thought he would own weapons, some of the best things he had stolen and some money to afford accommodation. Finally, we read some of one of Cath’s books (The Curse of the Highwayman) and thought about how they were linked to what we had just learnt. Our author visit was an amazing experience and we all send a massive thank you to Cath Howe for the fantastic time we had! By Sophie Dean (Jet Class)

KS2 Maths Workshop In Key Stage 2, two people from each class were chosen to take part in a maths workshop with Mrs Watanabe. In the workshop we were allowed to choose from some Year 3 and 4 word problems or Year 5 and 6 word problems! We were also allowed to choose who we were going to work with. We were allowed to work by ourselves, with a partner or in a group. It was extremely fun!

Spelling Workshop On Friday 23rd March we had a spelling workshop. All of the teachers in Years 2-6 chose two children from each class and we had to complete a series of spelling challenges. When we got there, Miss Booker showed us the challenges. It was hard throughout, with the Year 5 and 6 children completing Year 9 anagrams, the Year 3 and 4 children completing Year 5 and 6 anagrams and the Year 2 children completing Year 3 and 4 anagrams. The other activities included: word of the day; spelling rules; and a challenging spelling test (we are excited to learn the results). We had such a fun morning and we would love to do it again. By Sonnie Perkins (Year 5) Although spelling is not favoured by everyone at Langshott, most people enjoy it. Some of these children were chosen by their teachers to do a spelling workshop with Miss Booker on the 24th March. We started by solving anagrams; Year 2 did Year 3 and 4 words; Year 3 did Year 5 and 6 words and Year 5 and 6 did Year 9 words! What a challenge! Here is an example …. -ootcnsyrer - can you solve it? (answer page 13). Miss Booker has subscribed to a website called “Word of the Day” that emails her an unusual word every day - she shared a few with us. One of them was “Tutti”. We had to guess the meaning. If you are interested in finding out what it is, visit Jet class! Do you know any strange words? After that, we partnered up and were each given a sheet with different spelling rules. By using our dictionary skills, we had to find words which suited our rule. Finally, Miss Booker set our spelling knowledge to the test by creating a list of commonly mis-spelt words. In conclusion, we would like to thank Miss Booker for preparing these activities for us to work through, they were really enjoyable. By Morgan & Izzy (Year 6)

Year 1 News Flat Stanley Big Thank You Thank you to all the parents and carers for supporting and encouraging our Geography home learning of Flat Stanley. The children have thoroughly enjoyed receiving their Flat Stanley in the post, reading, talking and seeing photos of his adventures. We have had some very interesting adventures. Please continue to send them in if you haven't already, we look forward to them. We have put up all his adventures in a display in the class locating where Flat Stanley has travelled from within the UK. Multi Skills Tournament Year 1 On Friday 9th March a group of twelve Year 1 children took part in the Horley Schools Multi Skills tournament with other local infant and primary schools at Oakwood School. The children were great role models and ambassadors for Langshott as well as having team spirit and sportsmanship. The children were buzzing about their enjoyable morning and the various activities they completed! Well done to all those that took part and for persevering with their resilience and reciprocity skills as we came second place! Topaz Children: Leo, Jake, Frankie, Freya, Hannah, Josie Ruby Children: Sky, Tesh, Amelie, Lucas, Charlie, Keyaan

On Thursday 15th March, the hall was filled with music. ‘Open 2 Music’ came to entertain us and treat us to a range of musical genres, including classical, rock, disco, Latin and funk. It was great to see the children clapping and swaying to the music. We all came out with smiles on our faces and humming the song “Happy” that they performed as an encore. Parents should have received a flyer in the book bag advertising music lessons from this company. More flyers are available in the flyer rack by the front door.

Key Stage 2 Kind Box Inspired by a recent training session, we have introduced a kind box into Key Stage 2. The children are encouraged to nominate someone by writing their name and the reason and posting it in the kind box. These acts of kindness will be celebrated in our good learning assembly and the children will receive the 'kind' Marvellous Me badge.

Year 3 Dance Festival On Wednesday 7th March, Year 3 attended the East Surrey Dance festival at the Harlequin Theatre. With dances choreographed by our very own Mrs Langdale, Opal performed a dance linked to their English book, ‘Where the Wild Things are’ and Amber stepped back to the Stone Age with their dance to ‘The Flintstones’ theme tune. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience of rehearsing and performing on the stage, something that is completely new to some of them. They showed their fantastic self-control throughout the afternoon, with a lot of waiting around and practicing. They stood out amongst the other schools for their fantastic behaviour! Year 3 Team “Year 3 attended the Star Stepper show at the Harlequin in Redhill, Amber did an amazing Stone Age dance and Opal performed a wonderful dance to Where the Wild Things Are. We all had such a great time!” Olivia – Opal “Our Dance festival was amazing! We had a good time dancing at the Harlequin. We got to bring some games and snacks to keep us going for when it wasn’t our turn to dance. At the end, there was a big celebration which was very fun. We all had a great time and we were very tired afterwards.” Dylan – Amber

Cup Cake Club This term we started off our Cup Cake Club with a Mother’s Day theme. It was wonderful to see the active participation from the children and their enthusiasm. Each week we decorate two cupcakes with different themes. Children also get to taste different flavoured cupcakes including chocolate, red velvet and lemon. Yummy! The decorated cupcakes are then sent home in a lovely presentable cupcake box. Well done to all the children in this club.

Sports News Year 3 and 4 Football Tournament at Yattendon On Thursday 15th March, Year 3 had to play four games. We tried our best and started off really well, coming in first place in the first game and won 1-0. After this, we won the next two games. We worked well as a team and changed our subs in and out so that everyone got the chance to play. When it came to the final game against Yattendon, we found out it was the final decider for who would win. Both teams were even on no goals, until the last moment when Yattendon scored. We came in at an excellent 2nd place out of the Horley schools. Ethan Moore - Year 3 Langshott Year 3 Football Team

Year 4’s first match was against Meath Green and the score was 0-0, but that score was good because they beat us last year! Our 2nd match was against Charlwood, we drew 1-1 because Riley, who scored in the last second, brought the score up. A while later, we had our third match against Manorfield, another game we found easy and Charlie showed some great saving in goal. Riley scored again to give us a win. Well done Riley! We played against Yattendon and Burstow. Unluckily for us, Burstow scored 3 goals. All the boys played well, we had fun and we finished 3rd overall. The Year 4 Langshott team players were: Me (Luke), Oliver, Riley, Alex K, Finley, Cameron and Charlie. Well done to everyone. Thank you to parents for coming to watch and the teachers for organising. Next year, watch out – Langshott is coming! Luke Benjamin and Oliver Darcy – Year 4 Langshott Year 4 Football Team

KS2 Athletics Club – Coming next term! We have some exciting news for Key Stage 2! The teachers have decided to run a club together to give a fantastic experience for the children. In the past few years, we have been really close to winning District Sports and we have only practised events in Summer PE lessons. This year, we would like to offer children in Key Stage 2 the opportunity of coming to a Friday morning Athletics Club. The club will start at 8.00am, where the children will register in the hall and begin the sessions at 8:15am. The children will then head back to their class at 8:45am. The children will rotate and try out all the different events. Research has shown that there is a positive impact when children take part in exercise before school and allows children to be more engaged throughout lessons. However, we must stress that if a child doesn’t go to the Athletics Club, it does not mean they will not be picked for District Sports. This will be a fantastic opportunity for the teachers to see all the children in action and give them an amazing experience. This, however, means that some teachers will give up their summer club to help out with the Athletics Club. We feel that Athletics is something the children look forward to in the Summer term, whether they go to District Sports or not. This also allows us to offer a club to all the Key Stage 2 children and not be selective. We hope to see your child on Friday mornings!

The Archway Theatre Next to Horley Train Station the magic happens every other Saturday from 9am to 11.15am. This magic is being taught and practiced at the Archway Theatre. Well, it’s not exactly magic, but its close enough. The Archway Theatre is a wonderful place where children (from age 10) can learn how to perform on stage in front of an audience. These lessons are run by a lovely lady called Jacqui and she only charges £2 per lesson! I absolutely love it there and it’s like we’re a big family! On the 16th March, Mrs Bartolo, Miss Booker, Miss Jordan, Mrs Forster and Mrs Blanco came to see me perform at the Theatre. The show was called “Revolting Children” and was a mix of songs from a variety of musicals, such as Matilda, Anastasia, Les Miserables, Cinderella, Into the Woods and many more! I absolutely loved it and I recommend getting your child involved in an amazing way to boost people’s confidence and make life-long friends. By Morgan Pridmore Year 6

Friends of Langshott What a fantastic Easter Egg hunt! A BIG “THANK YOU” to Carey-Ann Dodah and Zoe Andrews for organising, our Year 6 helpers and parents, carers and children for making it such a success. We raised over £660. Well done to Isabelle Broughton (Emerald Class) who guessed the correct number of mini-eggs in the jar at 255! She will receive her prize in the end of term assembly. Next we have the Quiz to look forward to on 27th April, so please do get your teams together and enter what is sure to be a fun evening. Plus we are rapidly approaching the summer and the big event of the year - the Summer Fair and a school disco before that. If anyone has any questions about how the Friends operate or are interested in becoming more involved, please do give Nikki or Gen (both Reception mum's) a shout or email us on [email protected]

Parent’s Information For Key Stage One and Two Parents At the recent parent’s evening, all parents were given a report. A few parents have asked about the teacher assessment codes on the KS1 & 2 reports. I hope this clarifies things… Following the implementation of the new National Curriculum in 2014, the Government removed the level descriptors which were previously used to measure progress and attainment. At Langshott, children are assessed in year group bands, (Band 1-Band 6) which are divided as follows: Beginning / Beginning+ / Within / Within+ / Secure / Secure+ To meet age-related expectations, children should be at “within+” or “secure” at the end of the academic year. Children at “secure+” are described as working at greater depth. Children are expected to make 6 steps of progress from their starting points each academic year (5 steps in Year 1).

Second Hand Book Sale – Friday 20th April The parents of Year 6 are holding a second-hand book sale to raise funds for the Year 6 leavers. The money will be used to enhance the Year 6 disco and with the purchase of keepsakes for the children. We are asking for donations of any good condition children’s books that your children have read and would like to pass on. The books will be collected every morning of the week leading up to the sale under the covered area in the main playground. We would be very grateful if, over the Easter holidays, you could have a sort out and donate any used books to raise some money for the current Year 6 to make their last term at Langshott a memorable time. Spellosaur App Spellosaur is a free app to help children with their spelling. First you enter the words to learn, this can be your weekly spelling list, or just a set of words that your child has been struggling to learn. Spellosaur makes learning words more fun with a set of games to help progressively learn each spelling - listen and choose the correct word, complete the word by adding the missing letters, plus re-arrange the letters to make the word. You can also test yourself on your word list just like you would at school - listen to the word, then spell it, then the app will report which you got correct and incorrect at the end of the test. Each time you enter a new word list your prior words are saved for future review - so you can track how many words you have learned and keep practicing them if you like. To download the app, scan this QR code, or go to the following website: http://downloadapp.info/Spellosaur-461007342.html

Parking The staff at Oakwood Sports Centre have asked me to remind parents that we should NOT be parking in the Sports Centre Car Park. PLEASE be considerate and respect their wishes as we want to remain on good terms with our neighbours. Many thanks. Mrs Mackintosh.

48hr Sickness Rule We recently received a query about our 48 hour rule regarding sickness. Just to clarify, this is not a quirky Langshott rule, but one advised by the NHS. Please follow this link: https://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Yourchildatschool/Pages/Illness.aspx where you will see this…

We adhere to this to ensure complete recovery and reduce the possibility of infection for other children and staff. Thank you for your cooperation.

Marvellous Me We are excited to tell you that 99% of parents/carers at Langshott School are using Marvellous Me to engage with their child's/children's learning and other school achievements. Thank you to all of you for being part of something that we value so highly. It is also lovely to learn how many other family members have signed up, some even living in other countries. The children are always very proud to know that we have shared their learning and achievements through Marvellous Me and they often give their teachers ideas about the information that should be sent home!

GDPR is Coming The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a piece of EU-wide legislation which will determine how people’s personal data is processed and kept safe and the legal rights individuals have in relation to their own data. It will apply from 25 May 2018 to all organisations that process or handle personal data, including schools. It is similar to the Data Protection Act (DPA) 1998 in many ways. Most of the differences involve the GDPR building on or strengthening the principles of the DPA. As we move towards the May deadline I will be writing to parents with more guidance, including details on how we use pupil information; why we collect and use this information; the lawful basis on which we use this information and how we store the information. Please look out for the letter.
