Green infrastructure

Connecting habitats, routes and natural systems to create wellbeing for all

Green infrastructure to link and strengthen sensitive habitats was a primary consideration in the masterplan for Preston Beach ©Arup

6

Preston Beach, Western Australia The project objective was to establish a masterplan enabling the sustainable development of 4,500 tenant lots in close proximity to a highly sensitive ecological and dramatic coastal dune landscape. Arup promoted an innovative ‘xeriscape’ approach for the 900ha site to incorporate the new development into the fragile landscape, whilst providing a unique sustainable environment for future residents. The design included a bushfire resistant ecological buffer formed into a series of ‘xeriscape’ parks that would result in a total net gain of ecological habitat. Client: Preston Beach Developments JV Pty Ltd.

Designing and managing green infrastructure as a multifunctional resource can deliver climate change resilience and a wide range of ecosystem and quality of life benefits Pinewood Studios, UK A unique and ambitious project commissioned by Pinewood Studios for the creative industries to develop a living working media community, set within a collage of permanent film and TV locations. The 42ha masterplan developed by Arup was formed around iconic street scenes including New York, Paris, Amsterdam and San Francisco. These formed permanent film sets incorporated into a modern residential setting. Comprehensive landscape proposals were developed to create a unified public realm linked to a network of open spaces set within the development. Client: The Pinewood Studios Group.

Cambridgeshire Guided Busway Large infrastructure projects bring significant opportunities for green infrastructure. At 25km, the world’s longest guided busway provides a sustainable alternative to car journeys from Cambridge to Huntingdon. The Arup landscape and ecological design strongly integrates the scheme into the local landscape. A net habitat gain was achieved through Arup instigated and designed new compensation habitats comprising earthworks, wetland, woodland, scrub and natural regeneration using the seed bank contained in existing rail ballast. Arup took the project from concept to implementation. Client: Cambridgeshire County Council/BAM.

Sedgemoor Green Infrastructure 30% of Sedgemoor District is under international, national or local designation and this GI project concentrated on developing a strategy that linked, integrated and heightened these valuable natural assets. The vision prepared by Arup informs the District’s emerging Core Strategy and serves as a vital part of the evidence base. A strategic framework of general goals and objectives emerged from workshops and consultation sessions with key stakeholders. High-level guidelines and principles were translated into achievable district specific proposals and priority projects. Client: Sedgemoor District Council.

Beam Parklands, London Beam Parklands is a multi-award winning 53ha community park in East London, which forms part of the All London Green Grid. This project developed from a flood storage scheme into an exemplary habitat creation project connecting the park to the wider community. Arup produced a design which creates over 12ha of new diverse habitats, re-uses all materials sustainably on-site, improves access, creates natural play areas and protects existing valuable habitats and protected species. Consultation was key to the success of the project and the local community were fully engaged in the design. Client: Environment Agency / The Land Trust.

Tangye New Town, China Arup developed a masterplan for a 150ha demonstration area and a sustainability review of the existing 1,800ha Control Plan for Tangye New Town. This is a historically rich site that will become the new administrative centre for this area of China. The focus for the landscape design was to retain and develop existing river valleys as major city parks to add significant value to the development, whilst providing traffic free cycle and walking routes. ‘Old technology’ in the form of terracing was proposed as an effective and sustainable way of capturing rainfall and rebuilding the soil and ecological quality. Client: SIIC China 7

Natural Cities

Reconnecting people with nature to enriching lives and wellbeing

Urban Trees Research This leading research project carried out by Arup for CIRIA in liaison with industry leaders examines the significant role of large species trees in our urban environment. It is the larger species that match and compliment the architecture of the city and create great city places, whilst bringing a host of other social, environmental and economic benefits. Backed by global research and in the context of climate change and recent government policy, the publication is also an urgent call to reverse the serious decline of our urban tree stock. Client: Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA). Triton Street London - green roofs provide valuable habitats in urban areas to connect people with nature ©Arup

Thames Estuary 2100, London This award-winning and far-sighted strategy creates a strong framework for an integrated design approach for the Thames riverside environment over the next 100 years. Arup led the delivery of an estuary-wide strategy for incorporating flood defence raising with best practice landscape, ecological and public realm enhancements. Arup produced a ‘design toolkit’ to inform and inspire those involved in flood risk management to think and act creatively in embedding sustainable and lasting design into functional solutions. Client: Environment Agency. 8

City of Tshwane, South Africa Arup is delivering guidance on the regeneration and future development of the City of Tshwane. This large-scale 12km² masterplan aims to inspire and guide the regeneration and future development of the city centre and its surrounding suburbs. Engagement with key stakeholders and central government to obtain advice, gain support and buy-in has been a key to the project’s success. A series of landscape masterplans for precincts throughout the city have been developed to provide stakeholders with a clear sense of the vision for this ambitious project. Client: City of Tshwane, Department of Public Works.

Nature can match and compliment the architecture of a city and create great places, whilst bringing a host of social, environmental and economic benefits.

Client: SITRA.

Garden Bridge, London Drawing on London’s green heritage, the Garden Bridge aims to create an inspiring and attractive new way to link north and south in the heart of the city. This new 360m pedestrian route will link the South Bank to Temple and on to Covent Garden and Soho between Waterloo Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. The project will also form a unique new London destination and catalyst for regeneration in the area. Working collaboratively with Heatherwick Studio and Dan Pearson Studio, Arup is leading the landscape design in coordination with the bridge engineering team for this complex and unique project. Client: Transport for London.

Wanzhuang Eco City, China The client brief was to develop a sustainable masterplan to accommodate the growth of an eco-city with an anticipated urban population increase of 550% by the year 2020, within a landscape formed of sporadic small scale settlements, orchards and farmland. Analysing the 80km² site and its economic, environmental, and social context, the strategy Arup developed looked to preserve and protect the natural features of the site’s landscape, including its existing settlements and local industries, whilst allowing for sensitive low impact growth in the form of ‘expanded villages’. Client: SIIC China. 9

High Speed 1, UK

The landscape approach for this sports city masterplan in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia focused on creating an attractive and unifying public realm that will provide appropriate landscape setting for the main 60,000 seat football stadium and associated mosque, athletics and indoor sporting arenas. Set against the climatic conditions of the region, a fundamental driving principle of the landscape design was to optimise the use of available water and shape the public realm by creating comfortable environments in places where people will gather. Arup took this project from concept design through to implementation. Client: Saudi Aramco.

A complex landscape project on a vast scale, through a wide variety of historic urban and rich rural landscapes; Arup was involved in all aspects of the project from route planning through to detailed design, procurement, implementation and management. Arup provided sustainable solutions for the positive use of over 10 million m³ surplus fill to create the final landscape earthworks design successfully integrating the route with a cut/fill balance. Al Jazeera, Qatar

Stockley Park, London

An Arup multidisciplinary team is leading proposals for a major upgrading of the key public realm within the Al Jazeera TV complex. This space, overlooked by TV studios, will reflect the identity and branding quality of the company. The design proposals retain important historical site features and introduce contemporary design in the form of unique and unique shade structures. The landscape design folds to conceal the movement of pedestrians across the space whilst providing an enriching and quality environment in which workers and visitors can relax. Client: Al Jazeera.

The Arup concept was to develop an urban town centre style development to provide community functions for the workers of Stockley Park and the wider community of West Drayton. This breaks away from the traditional business park model, towards the creation of communal public spaces. The masterplan employs sustainable principles including the re-use of grey water, suds surface drainage and creation of ecological wetlands. The layout also promotes walking and cycling by reinstating a seldom-used towpath along the Grand Union Canal to provide dedicated pedestrian and cyclist access into and through the site.
