LETTER
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Lake Catholic Community, Another year, and another story of success for Lake Catholic High School. Our mission gets stronger every year as donors, staff and families come together to facilitate the success of students. With the start of this academic year, our students now enjoy the benefit of two extraordinary advances to our education. The first, the complete remodel of our science labs, carries with it significant long-term impact. You can read more in this edition of the magazine, but know that the work completed in the labs gives our scholars a competitive edge that will carry them to college. As we highlight their natural interest in the sciences, we also open the doors to a host of careers, some traditional like medicine, health care, or research. Others are newer involving ecology, environmental studies, and preservation. The other great value brought to the Lake Catholic High School education this year is the infusion of technology into our daily routine. Through our Cougar Chromebook Initiative, every student received a new Chromebook for use in classes and throughout the day. Now, resources are just a click away. With our wireless and Internet infrastructure improved to state-of-the-art quality, students can have a world of information truly at their fingertips. Imagine a teacher distributing the latest novel for English class not by handing a book to every student, but by “pushing” the title out to the class digitally -– in seconds. Imagine a student starting a paper from the notes taken in class, then continuing it with his study group in the Atrium after school, completing it at home before turning in to bed that night, and pressing a button to submit it to the teacher before the midnight deadline. It’s great to watch students learn. It’s exciting to learn ourselves. It’s a gift of joy to see these things happen here at Lake Catholic. It’s also an invitation to you to join us as we celebrate these accomplishments and share in our joy as our students excel. I invite you to take a place among us as a leader, a supporter, and a donor. I invite you to share in the advancement of our mission, to help our students grow in their faith and lead in their wisdom. I invite you always to remember that “Once a Cougar, Always a Cougar.” Peace,
Sal Miroglotta, M.A., M.S.Ed. President P.S. Be sure to take the time peruse the names of the donors to Lake Catholic High School listed in this publication. Let these names inspire you and lead you to once again consider what the world would be like with more Lake Catholic alumni in it. That is the change you make with your support.

SCIENCE LAB RENOVATIONS
More than a facelift… If you had built a house in 1970, chances are your “modern” kitchen would have been equipped with an electric range, refrigerator, and a few other “luxuries.” The wallpaper might have been large oversized yellow flowers paired with avocado green or harvest gold appliances and Formica counter tops. Just enough storage. Possibly a small but clunky TV or radio on the counter. If this were your kitchen, by now you would have given serious thought to a remodel. Move from the kitchen to the science lab. You wouldn’t have one of those at your house, but there were five of them at your school, Lake Catholic. Calling for a remodel for some of the same reasons, but for many more that impact education for 825 students every day, the school moved forward with extensive design changes for the rooms.
6 | www.lakecatholic.org
• Safety: Today’s scholars don’t sit in their seats for an entire class period or session in the lab. Lessons are dynamic, moving, and interactive. The classroom, to be both fully functional and safe, must be flexible and able to be moved into different configurations at a moment’s notice. A lab going on in one corner is supported with a
video presentation in another and a small group working together on their lab report in yet another. The former set-up with immovable seating, stationary lab settings, and insufficient utilities did not serve their needs any longer.

• Scholarship: From building clay models to 3-D printing to sophisticated lab dissections on larger specimens to hands-on soil analysis and gardening experimentation, the very nature of the science scholar at Lake has evolved, grown, and matured. Indeed, what may have once been college level learning is now commonly found in Lake science classrooms. Add to that the emergence of exciting new areas of study that are current and career oriented like ecology and environmental studies, and we know that needs have changed completely. • Storage and Seating: Like that kitchen from 1970, the science lab today has much more equipment and a much greater need for storage. A few shelves hanging on brackets won’t suffice. Rather, integrated storage, some left open for projects, others able to be locked to secure valuable equipment, is now evident. The same goes for seating. The teacher’s call to “gather round” to watch a demonstration or to see a particular chemical reaction is quicker and easier to achieve with flexible seating that is both functional for the scholar and attractive for the room. • Technology: More than SmartBoards, access to features of their iPads or new Chromebooks, students need quick reach to Google Docs and the vast array of resources that teachers
can “push out” to their students within seconds. The desk with writing space, armrest, and flat top now gives way to a flat surface for the Chromebook, an easy one stop for note taking, researching, reading, and communicating. Large screens within view of every student and easy movement for the instructor now help to assure every student getting personal attention and instruction when they need it.
How it all happens…
On June 1, our maintenance staff, under the direction of Director of Maintenance Ed Zizleman ’74, began the demolition of the current five labs. Cabinets, flooring, counters, and shelving all had to be demolished, removed, and hauled away. Electrical, water and gas hookups had to be checked, modernized, and prepared for new appliances. Chemicals had to be carefully and properly removed and stored until the project’s completion. And all of this was under a very tight construction schedule. Before anyone could imagine it, August arrived and students began to populate the building, waiting to be back in the labs. Demolition and preparation continued smoothly until arrival of the new furniture and equipment. Installation began promptly with a three week time frame ending August 1st. After moving back in, connecting technology, testing
SCIENCE LAB
INITIATIVE
the facilities, and putting the finishing touches on the facilities, students arrived just days later.
What is means…
These are not things done to make the building look pretty. Certainly the upgrades are exciting and attractive, but the impact on the learning styles of our students is dramatic. The range of lessons that can be added to the curriculum, the impact on college preparation, the depth of labs, lectures, demonstrations and discussions goes more deeply than ever before. State standards are within easier reach and state testing less daunting while students are better prepared for college entrance testing and advanced science classes.
This is what your support looks like…
Dollars flow into Lake Catholic from a variety of sources. But typically, tuition dollars are used to pay for the day-to-day operations of the building. It is the support, in the hundreds of thousands each year, in the millions in the last decade that makes this kind of impact on our capital investments. From a new track and turf field to renovations to the music wing and Media Center, to the new Aquinas Center for Mission and Ministry to the science labs, your dollars made the difference. This is what excellence looks like, and it is the difference you made with your support.

2014-15 Advancement Review / Lake Catholic High School
A message from the
Vice President of Advancement
Dear Lake Catholic Community, I love the beginning of each new school year. While most lament the end of yet another summer, I count down the days in August until the students and teachers return to the building. It is fairly quiet in the building during the summer months, although it is true that Lake Catholic never sleeps. There are still the occasional off-season workouts, camps, and families stopping in, but without the daily noise of an entire student body there is just something lacking. The students are the daily reminder of why Lake Catholic exists, and why we do what we do for Lake Catholic. They inject an energy into this environment that just simply doesn’t exist elsewhere. As you read through this year’s Advancement Review you will see the lists of those who made philanthropic financial commitments to Lake Catholic. Each of these gifts is impactful beyond the amount or category they are listed under though. Each is a statement of willingness to support Lake Catholic, our students’ experience at the school, and the mission and values that Lake Catholic works to instill on a daily basis. It is inspiring to see how many people have, and continue to, support Lake Catholic in this way, in addition to the countless hours people spend supporting our students with their time and resources. The old saying goes, “It takes a village…” and the Lake Catholic Community is certainly a living example. Your support has become a part of the fabric of Lake Catholic. The time, talent, and treasure given to this school and community allow us to thrive, to plan for the future, and to continue providing a quality Catholic education to our students. I hope you will consider continuing your support of Lake Catholic in any way that is achievable for you so that we can continue creating a world with more Lake Catholic alumni in it. Sincerely,
Michael V. Bernot ’01 Vice President of Advancement

2015 ADVANCEMENT REVIEW
PHILANTHROPIC GIVING TO LAKE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Central to the mission of Lake Catholic High School is for our education to be available to anyone who wants it. That particular objective yields a challenging business model. Using traditional business language, it requires that Lake Catholic ‘sell’ their ‘product’ for less than it costs to ‘produce’. In the language of education, it means the tuition charged is less than the actual cost of educating a student. That reality results in what Catholic high school administrators call the “funding gap”. In order to “fill” the funding gap, Lake Catholic must, therefore, seek philanthropic funding. Quite often, that results in much confusion, misunderstanding and frustration among donors and giving prospects. And, unintentionally but frequently, the school’s fundraising methodology can contribute to the confusion. In order to avoid confusion, misunderstanding and/or frustration among the Lake Catholic High School family, what follows is a summary explanation of each of the components of our newly created fundraising strategy and process. There are three components of the Lake Catholic High School fundraising strategy:
1) ANNUAL GIVING 2) MAJOR GIFTS 3) PLANNED GIVING DEFINITIONS AND PURPOSES:
1) ANNUAL GIVING Definition: “annual giving” is a term that refers to the sum total of all fundraising elements, the sole purpose of which is to support the annual operating budget. “Annual giving” is required because of the “funding gap” (identified above) that exists. Each year, the school starts off in the red because the tuition charged will not cover the school’s operating expenses for that year. Therefore, the school must implement an annual giving program in order to balance its budget.
The Annual Fund Drive is the most visible and important component of annual giving. This year, we are enhancing our annual fund drive process. One change that you will notice is that there is no longer an annual fund envelope in the magazine. The envelope in the magazine, often referred to as a “passive ask”, is not the most efficient method so we will be making that change. You will now be receiving, via the mail, a more specific, upgraded and personal invitation to support Lake Catholic High School. We’re excited about this upgraded approach so please look for our new package in the mail in the next few weeks. Purpose: Annual giving is comprised of the annual fund drive (several mailings with a response envelope), the Growing the Mission Gala, the Fire and Faith Scholarship Drive and all smaller fundraising initiatives held by various clubs and teams during the year. The money raised from each of these elements goes directly to support the annual operating budget. Without a successful annual giving program, Catholic schools like Lake Catholic would be unable to keep their doors open because they would not be able to meet their annual financial operating obligations. Summary: Annual Giving is 100% focused on THIS YEAR’S OPERATING BUDGET.
2) MAJOR GIFTS Definition: major gifts can be defined in two ways: a) by their amount (usually a gift of $10,000 or more in one year) or, b) by their purpose – to fund capital needs. Purpose: The purpose of major gifts for Catholic secondary schools is to fund capital needs such as new building, facilities renovation and expansion, major technology upgrades, and endowment and tuition assistance. They are called major gifts because they are larger amounts ($25,000+) committed over a period of three to five years – typically referred to as a “pledge period”. Their sole purpose is to fund the capital needs of the school. Major gifts are traditionally sought during capital campaigns or special funding initiatives/ projects and have a specific dollar goal and a specific funding LAKE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

purpose – new gym, renovated classrooms, smart boards for classrooms, upgraded athletic fields, increased endowment or tuition assistance, for example. Without a successful major gift program and/or occasional capital campaign, Catholic high schools like Lake Catholic would be unable to address their ever-present capital improvement needs. That would affect their ability to offer the very best education possible and to compete effectively for students and for faculty in today’s demanding and competitive world of secondary education. Summary: Major gifts are 100% focused on the school’s capital needs that will be completed within a specific time period – usually 3-5 years.
3) PLANNED GIVING Definition: a planned gift is defined as any major gift, made in lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate planning. There are two primary types of planned gifts: • gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for the contribution • gifts payable upon the donor’s death – inclusion in the donor’s will 4
2015 ADVANCEMENT REVIEW
Lake Catholic LEGACY SOCIETY
Funding provides support for: Endowment “Other” as Designated
In the Catholic high school context, the latter (inclusion in the donor’s will) is the most common. Planned gifts are focused on the future – actually, many years into the future (10, 15, 20+ years) since they are only realized upon the donor’s death. Purpose: Planned gifts cannot build buildings or increase your annual fund (in the short term) but when realized, they can substantially increase your endowment and are, therefore, an excellent method of providing future income to the school via the endowment. Planned gifts are a critical element of the financial future of the school and must be included in the school’s overall development strategy. Summary: Planned gifts are 100% focused on the financial FUTURE of the school typically (not always) earmarked for the endowment. Overall Summary: Annual giving is focused on the now, the current operating year; major gifts are focused on capital needs for the short-term future (3-5 years); planned gifts are typically earmarked for the endowment and are fundamental to the school’s long-term future (10, 15 20+ years).

Lake Catholic LEGACY SOCIETY
Some of the most transformational gifts received by institutions are planned gifts. In essence, a “planned gift” is one given from assets rather than income. Gifts of
this nature are deferred or unrealized until a future time designated by the donor; therefore, they cost you, the donor, nothing at the time of commitment. These gifts can be made now without impacting cash flow, lifestyle, or financial security.
The most popular planned gifts include: – Gifts from a Retirement Plan, IRA, or other qualified plan – Gifts from a Life Insurance Policy – Gifts from a Will or Trust – Gifts of Stock and Appreciated Assets Additionally, making a commitment to a planned gift to Lake Catholic immediately grants you a lifetime membership in the Lake Catholic Legacy Society. As a member, your name will be forever listed in the annually published Advancement Review, Lake Catholic website, and anywhere the Lake Catholic Legacy Society is acknowledged – even after your gift is realized! If you would like to discuss your planned giving options further, or if you have already arranged a planned gift to Lake Catholic, please contact The Advancement Office at Lake Catholic at (440) 578-1020.

LAKE CATHOLIC LEGACY SOCIETY Lake Catholic High School is pleased to grant special recognition to those donors who have demonstrated a commitment to the future of our school with a gift to our planned giving program. Planning a future gift to the Lake Catholic Endowment can be a surprisingly affordable and easy way to leave a legacy.
MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA Membership in the Lake Catholic Legacy Society can be attained in two ways: • A current gift or plan a future gift to the Lake Catholic Endowment of $10,000 or more, and/or • A beneficiary designation to Lake Catholic using any of the methods listed under Types of Gifts
MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS Membership in the Lake Catholic Legacy Society includes the following benefits: • Upon enrollment, you will receive a special honorary gift to commemorate your lifelong membership in the Legacy Society. • A nnually, your name will be published in the Lake Catholic “Philanthropy” Advancement Review, the school’s honor roll of donors. • A nnually, you will receive an invitation to the Legacy Day Mass and luncheon, with special seating and appreciation from faculty, staff, and students at Lake Catholic.
WHAT TO GIVE There are various assets that can be used to fund a gift to Lake Catholic, including:
CASH
LIFE INSURANCE If you own a life insurance policy that has accumulated cash value, you may make a gift to Lake Catholic in two ways. First, you can designate Lake Catholic as the primary beneficiary under the policy. Upon your death, the death benefit will be paid to the school. Alternatively, you can designate Lake Catholic as the primary beneficiary under the policy and assign ownership of the policy to the School during your lifetime. You may obtain a charitable deduction by transferring ownership of the policy to Lake Catholic.
RETIREMENT PLAN ASSETS Retirement plan assets such as pension funds, 401Ks, or IRAs are another easy way to give to Lake Catholic. Such assets may be taxable if transferred to an heir, but would not be taxable if given to the School. You can designate the School to be the primary beneficiary for a stated percentage of the retirement funds, or you can designate the School as a contingent beneficiary.
SAVINGS BONDS Generally, interest income from savings bonds is taxed to you when the bonds are cashed in or mature. Savings bonds cannot be transferred to Lake Catholic during your lifetime. However, a savings bonds can be left to Lake Catholic in a will, allowing the School to receive the full value of the bond without taxation. Alternatively, a savings bond can be cashed in with the proceeds being donated to the School which allows you to obtain a charitable deduction against the interest income you would have to recognize for tax purposes.
HOW TO GIVE
A gift of cash, by check or credit card, is perhaps the simplest way to give. Cash gifts of $10,000 or more can be used to create a named scholarship at Lake Catholic. Additionally, you may determine criteria upon which scholarship grants will be awarded. Cash gifts of less than $10,000 can be made to existing Lake Catholic scholarship funds, or the general Endowment Fund.
There are a number of ways to donate to Lake Catholic during your lifetime or at the time of your death. Some enable you to donate an asset now, obtain a tax deduction for that donation, yet retain some of the benefits from that asset during your lifetime. You should consult with your attorney to obtain legal counseling and tax advice regarding the appropriateness of any of these devices for you. Common donation devices include the following:
SECURITIES
BEQUESTS
One of the most common assets donated to a charity is stock that has appreciated in value and has been held by the donor for more than one year. Such gifts are common for two reasons: (1) you may avoid paying capital gains tax on the increase in the value of the stock; and (2) you may receive a tax deduction based on the value of the stock at the time of the donation.
A bequest in your will is one of the most common ways of making an endowed gift to Lake Catholic. The bequest may donate a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, a specific asset, the remainder of your estate after specific bequests to loved ones are fulfilled, or be contingent upon identified beneficiaries predeceasing you. You must specify in the bequest if you desire that the bequest be an endowment gift – that the principal of the asset will be preserved and the income produced by the asset be used to fund scholarships, facilities, current expenses, etc.
REAL ESTATE Another asset often used for charitable donations is real estate that has appreciated in value. As with a gift of stock, you may avoid payment of income tax on the appreciation in the value of the real estate and may receive a charitable deduction on the donation. 30
2015 ADVANCEMENT REVIEW
Bequest language can be as simple as: “I, [name], of [city, state, ZIP], give, devise and bequeath to Lake Catholic High School [ , or % of my estate, or description of property] for its unrestricted use and purpose.”
CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES A charitable gift annuity is a contract you enter into with Lake Catholic. You transfer cash or property to the School in exchange for a lifetime stream of annual income from the School. You may receive a tax deduction at the time you enter into the contract with Lake Catholic. Upon your death, the cash/property goes to the School.
RETAINED LIFE ESTATE You can donate your home to Lake Catholic, retaining a “life estate” for yourself and your spouse retain the right to live in the house for your lifetimes. At the same time, you may qualify for a substantial tax deduction in the year you make the donation to the School. The appreciation in the value of the house is not subject to capital gains tax that may otherwise be payable by you.
CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST A charitable remainder trust is a trust established by you to provide income to you (or a beneficiary designated by you) during the life of the trust; at the termination of the trust, the remaining cash/ property (securities or real estate) is distributed to Lake Catholic. The income distributed to you annually can be a fixed amount (“annuity trust”) or a variable amount based on a defined percentage of the trust principal (“unitrust”). You may be able to claim a partial charitable tax deduction and may not have to pay an immediate capital gains tax if the trust converts an appreciated asset to cash.
CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST Pursuant to a charitable lead trust, Lake Catholic receives annual payments during the life of the trust, either a fixed amount (“charitable lead annuity trust”) or a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of trust principal (“charitable lead unitrust”). The principal remaining in the trust after completion of the annual payments to Lake Catholic is distributed to you or persons you designate. If you grant yourself to receive the remainder of the trust principal (“grantor lead trust”), you are taxed on the income from the property held in trust. You are entitled to claim an income tax deduction for the present value of the income payments to Lake Catholic.
THE IMPORTANCE OF LAKE CATHOLIC’S ENDOWMENT A charitable endowment is a collection of funds held by a nonprofit institution, such as Lake Catholic High School, to support its mission. Generally, the principal of the endowment is held in perpetuity to produce income that is used to meet the numerous financial needs of the school. A healthy endowment fund is critical to the success of all great educational institutions. Substantial endowment funds provide the financial stability necessary for an educational institution to invest in the facilities, faculty, and educational resources necessary to provide an excellent education to its students – and to attract future generations of students. A healthy endowment is especially critical to a private Catholic school like Lake Catholic. Lake Catholic not only must invest in its facilities, faculty, and educational resources to provide and exemplary education to its students, as do secular schools. But Lake Catholic also has a much more important mission that great secular schools do not have: to make its excellent Catholic-based education available to any student who desires to enroll at Lake Catholic, no matter his or her financial means. Annually, Lake Catholic’s endowment fund provides financial assistance to hundreds of children who otherwise would not be able to afford a Lake Catholic education. Our Catholic faith requires that Lake Catholic provide such support to those in need. Contributing to Lake Catholic’s endowment provides substantial benefits to the donor. Most importantly, a gift to Lake Catholic’s endowment can survive in perpetuity. The donor can create an everlasting bond between his/her family and future generations of the Lake Catholic community. For example, a donor can fund a scholarship such as “The Smith Family Scholarship Fund,” that will provide support for Lake Catholic students – and create a legacy for the donor’s family – for generations to come. Lake Catholic thanks you for considering a meaningful gift to its endowment. Please contact Mike Bernot in the Lake Catholic Advancement Office for more information on planned giving or to notify Lake Catholic of your planned gift arrangements.
If you designate other persons, such as your family, to receive the remainder of the trust principal (“nongrantor” or “family lead trust”), you do not qualify for an income tax deduction. But you receive a charitable gift tax deduction for the present value of Lake Catholic’s interest.

Alumni Spotlights Alumni Spotlights is a new component to our Lake Catholic Magazine that will feature stories on alumni, parents, and friends of the Cougar community who continue to make an impact on the lives of others.
The Unsung Steward of LC Ed Zizelman entered Lake Catholic as a member of the first class. Having grown up with his family in Wickliffe and attended Mapledale Elementary, Ed did not originally have a desire to become a student at the new Catholic high school under construction in Mentor. The friends he had made to that point went to the same school as him, and had plans to attend Wickliffe High School. Fortunately for Ed and Lake Catholic though, his parents had other plans for his high school years.
“My parents wanted me to attend Lake Catholic for high school,” said Ed of how he came to be one of Lake Catholic’s first students. “They thought it was exciting that the Diocese of Cleveland was beginning a coed high school in Lake County, and my father was a donor to the capital campaign that led to the founding of Lake Catholic.” At the time, Ed was not aware of the impact that Lake Catholic would have on the next four years of his life and beyond, nor the lasting impact that he would have on Lake Catholic as the school’s director of maintenance. We took some time to sit down with Ed to get a little more insight from the man behind the scenes at LC.
What was it like being a part of the first graduating class? I felt like I had accomplished the most important thing in my life to that point – graduating high school. Jim Simonis was principal and he was outstanding. There was still discipline, but it was clear Mr. Simonis truly loved the students and school. We were at Mentor Shore for the first half of my freshman year, then in the LC building after Christmas break.
12 | www.lakecatholic.org
Going to school in a different building while the school was being finished didn’t seem like a big deal to anyone. A big reason we were late getting into the new school was a labor strike. While it was on hold I remember someone telling me that there were nuns trying to move furniture into the new building but were blocked by the picketing laborers because they weren’t union movers. In the new building there was a little confusion, but a lot of excitement. We had to learn where everything was, but everything went very smoothly. That year, I believe, we voted on our school colors and the school mascot. They allowed us in the first graduating class to be a large part of that discussion. There was a strong sense of pride in my class because we were essentially “seniors” for all four years. There was never a class above us. Now, I’m just a senior.
What did you do after graduating, before eventually returning to LC? I went to Tri-C and got an associates degree in Business Management with a
concentration in Psychology & Human Relations. Then I went to work in the restaurant business where I managed for a while, then into franchise development where I would train franchisees on how to run a restaurant business. While doing that I was doing side work with a friend who was an electrician. He put me through what he called his private apprenticeship – he was a journeyman electrician. I’d work with him on nights and weekends and we began flipping houses together and some other smaller contract work. I then started my own business doing similar work, called EZ Properties. Then one of my suppliers hired me to manage their branch office in the area – Hartman Independent Company, a fastener company. I managed their offices for maybe 5 years. I then took a job at VASJ in 1995 – Director of Buildings and Grounds. Sr. Maria Berlec, O.S.U. called and offered me the job. I was jumping for joy. The first thing I thought was “Hopefully, some day I can end up at LC.” When I heard that Mike Santilla was retiring, I contacted the diocese to ask for a transfer. I then came back to LC in 2003.
ALUMNI
SPOTLIGHTS Since working at LC, what projects have you undertaken that you think people should be aware of? The first project was changing all light fixtures in the building from T12 to T8 fixtures. That was a big project because at that time our power consumption was reduced by 20% due to the changes. It was a significant savings per month and yearly. Next was changing all the plumbing fixtures in the building to lowconsumption, metered fixtures. We finished in summer of 2004. The following fall a water company supervisor showed up to ask me what we were doing to get the water consumption so low. He thought we were bypassing a meter somehow. I showed him our recent changes and he got back in his car and left. Next was the boilers. We had two 6.5 million BTU boilers that were original at the time. We changed those out to three 2-million BTU, 100% modulating boilers. That alone saved us $25-30,000 in gas bills. Overall, it has saved us 1/3 of our consumption which has amounted to huge savings for the school over the life of these boilers. These are the boilers still at LC. Next was the hot water domestic boilers – 300,000 to 100,000 BTU boiler. It is 2/3 more efficient than the 300,000 BTU boiler. From there, we replaced our old chiller to a new chiller for A/C. Although it is the same size tonnage, it is much more efficient and less expensive to operate. It wasn’t a huge amount less but old chiller was costing us up to $10,000 each year in repairs. The new chiller should go 20 years without any major issues, only minor repairs will be necessary from time to time. This next one is really cool: We put in VFD (Variable Frequency Drives) on all the large motors in the building’s ventilators. It allows the motor to start and never go
into a locked rotor which causes the electrical spike of seven times the operating amperage of the motor. So a 20 amp motor would spike at 140 amps. Commercial electricity is sold at your highest spike rate. So if all your motors started at the same time, you are charged at that peak rate because CTI needs to be able to provide that max amount you draw. With a VFD you never spike, you gradually work up to the operating amperage. This has saved us over $25,000 each year in electricity. This will continue every year they exist. And the payback time for these was one year and three months. Its been a great investment for the school. We haven’t had to repair or replace any of these yet and don’t expect to for the next 5-10 years.
Quick Facts: ED ZIZELMAN • Ed and his wife, Regina, met at Tri-C 40 years ago. They have been married for 38 years, 39 come October. They have two children, and three grandchildren: Eric is 35, and married to his wife Amanda. They have two children, Maya (7) and Evan (5) and live in Cincinatti where he works for US Customs and Border Protection. Kaitlin is 28 and married to her husband Jason. They have one child, Kennedy (18 months as of August), who shares a birthday with Ed. They live in Eastlake and Kaitlin works at Progressive. • Outside of work, Ed enjoys hunting, fishing, karaoke and dancing. “I’ve been known to cut a mean rug,” said Ed. And all of us who know him are inclined to agree.
At the beginning of the 14-15 school year we upgraded our lighting to LED tubes. We didn’t have to change our light fixtures. All the classrooms and one hallway are done. We will be done with the rest of the building this Fall. It will result in an additional $30,000 electricity savings per year over their 11-year lifespan – based off of today’s pricing of 6 cents/KW. My crew also helps with many of the capital improvements such as the construction of the new ministry center, replacing the old dividing wall in the H-wing into permanent walls, creating new classroom spaces, a new admissions office and new conference room. We also upgraded the serving area in the cafeteria, locker rooms and video conference room. A lot of time is spent on preventative maintenance projects and equipment failures/repairs. The school was built in 1970 – sometimes things just quit working. We are constantly making improvements and replacements and keeping up with not only keeping the building maintained, but also making improvements. Because of all these projects and lowering our energy consumption, we have significantly reduced our carbon footprint. All our stormwater goes into the swale and into Lake Erie. Low consumption toilets and urinals put less water into the sanitary sewer system and simultaneously save us money on water. None of this would be possible without the foresight of the administrations I have worked under. I have received great support for my proposals. These projects are not the most visible or attractive sounding, but I appreciate working for people who have the foresight to hear these ideas and put them into action.
