We reach our camp at or before sunset. Our route continues to the Blyde River Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world, and see the majestic “Three Rondavels” and the impressive canyon formed by the erosion of the river. trip grading

Adventure touring Although there is no commitment to extended walking on this journey we nonetheless want to keep the ‘accent on the active’. We therefore advise that any physical training you complete before undertaking the trip will be to good effect.

adventure travel By its very nature adventure travel involves an element of the unexpected. In remote and developing countries do not expect standards you are used to at home. Remote areas are sometimes unpredictable and itineraries may be altered. To get the most out of your adventure it is important that you are flexible, positive and eager to take on all the challenges that arise. If you are uncertain about your suitability for this trip we recommend that you speak with your consultant or travel agent.

important note These trip notes represent the most current information for this itinerary, and may supersede any information in the current brochure, including but not limited to the itinerary and price. The itinerary should be seen as a guide only. This itinerary may change at any time due to inclement weather, forces of nature and other circumstances beyond our control.

country information

South Africa is a huge and diverse nation covering the entire Southern Tip of the African continent. The Rainbow Nation is home to an incredible diversity of peoples who are working on forging a new future a decade after the fall of the Apartheid regime. The land is as diverse as the people, from the postcard perfection of Cape Town and the Table Mountain to the rugged splendour of the Orange River and the teeming metropolis of Johannesburg.

climate

Southern Africa experiences a generally dry climate. In and around Johannesburg ‑ There is a summer rainy season from November to March. The dry season from April to October includes the winter, when rain is rare and the nights can be very cold. Days are usually clear, warm and sunny and nights can get frosty in June and July. In and around Cape Town, the rain falls through winter (April to October) with a dry, warm summer (November to March).

a typical day

This tour involves a lot of driving, with up to 12 hours sitting in the vehicle. The drive from Johannesburg to Kruger Park, depending on how many / how long stops are made on the way, will take approximately 5 hours; this is to reach one of the Kruger Park entrance gates. Then, from the gate to the camp (with speed limit max 50 km on tar roads, max 40 km/hr on gravel roads) will take another 1‑2 hours. As you are travelling through the park, you will also stop when you see animals. It is therefore impossible to give timings, however you should be prepared to spend a lot of time in the vehicle (up to 12 hours) both driving to/from Kruger, and also whilst you are inside the park itself. Please note: this trip is operated in sedan vehicles (if there are 2 or 3 clients), or in 7‑seater vehicles (if there are 4 or more clients). In Kruger Park we usually leave camp each morning when the gates open at 6:00am. The animals are most active during morning and late afternoon. All visitors must be at their camp before the gates close at 18:00pm (otherwise you will be locked out and fined). During the middle of the day, you will either rest (if spending more than one night in same camp), or you will travel from one camp to the next – often also stopping at a waterhole (if there is shade) to see what animals come to drink during the middle of the day.

dietary requirements

Provided we are advised in advance of your departure we are able to cater for vegetarian diets and can assist with medically recommended diets (allergies and intolerances). Please ensure you discuss your requirements with us well in advance (at least 1 month prior to your trip) to determine whether we can cater to such dietary requirements on your chosen adventure. Please note that options are likely to be limited in very remote locations or alternatives may be more expensive or unavailable. There may be times when those with special requirements may need to provide their own food. We are unable to guarantee a peanut‑free or allergen‑free trip, and therefore, we strongly encourage that travellers with life‑threatening or severe allergies take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility of exposure. Passengers must travel with all necessary medications for food allergies and be capable of self‑administering these medications.

accommodation on the trip

In the Kruger region we stay in safari style ‘rondavels’ – round huts (equivalent to 3 star). All rooms are comfortably furnished, with en suite shower and toilet. Depending on availability at time of booking, some tours will stay in the one camp for 2 nights, whilst others will move from one camp to another on the second night.

what you carry

In your daypack you will need to carry extra warm clothing (early morning game drives can be quite chilly), a rainjacket, water bottle, camera gear, valuables and personal items such as sunscreen, lip balm etc.

equipment required

Comfortable shoes and comfortable clothes (a comprehensive gear list is provided in the predeparture information provided on booking).

non exclusive trips

Please note that this trip is not exclusive to World Expeditions clients and is operated by our partners in South Africa. Your participation and involvement is an integral part of an enjoyable and successful journey. Groups are pleasantly informal, usually comprising a wide range of nationalities and are aimed at healthy, active participants looking for an adventurous holiday.

wildlife

The wilderness areas of Africa are populated by large numbers of wild and potentially dangerous animals. The trip aims to view these animals in their natural habitat, uncontrolled by fences. Your experienced guides will make every effort to ensure the safety of the group at all times. Please be aware that all safari travel, including vehicle safaris in the proximity of wild animals is never entirely without risk. By travelling into wild areas in search of wild animals, all participants accept that they are choosing an adventure that includes an element of risk and this is an inherent aspect of the enjoyment of this style of travel.

vehicles & safety

During the course of your trip, we will use a variety of vehicles, all of which are fit for purpose and the conditions encountered. It should be noted that laws governing transportation safety may differ from those in your home country and on occasion some vehicles may not have seat belts fitted. While game viewing within a national park could be one example, public bus transfers or specialised transport such as ‘tuk‑tuk’s’ could be another. Where seat belts are not provided we strongly recommend that you hold tight to a fixed part of the vehicle at all times.
