Beading at Shriners We will be part of the in-house Mardi Gras parade at Shrine Burns again this year, which will take place Friday, February 17th at 9 am. We even get to be part of the “float” judging before the parade this year and will be providing King’s cakes and drinks for the kids and their families after the parade. If you would like to participate you should contact me at [email protected] or call 409-770-3209. We meet in the lobby at 9am, and the parade starts at 10am. If you drive up and leave your driver’s license you can get a token to park in the lot right behind Shrine. We get a bag of beads from the Krewe, but the kids (and families) love to get special, kid related beads. Please let the parents put the beads on the kids. If you want to bring a purchased King Cake or case of small waters let me know. Contact Karen Hansen with any questions.

[email protected] or 409-770-3209.

Beading at Nursing Homes BEADING AT THE MERIDIAN, GULF HEALTH CARE Mardi Gras season has arrived. Our Krewe will soon be in full swing. It has been our tradition in the past years to bead the patients at the local nursing homes and Shriners Burns Hospital. It is very rewarding to give these people a little taste of Mardi Gras. For those of you who have never participated in this event, make an effort to join us this year. Carolyn Urbani will be at The Meridian, 2228 Seawall Blvd. (entrance on 23 rd Street) on Friday, February 17th. Meet in the lobby at 10:30 AM. If you would like to join us, contact me at [email protected]. Phone – 409/744-8554. Richard Ivey will coordinate the Gulf Health Care group. This year, we will do this home on Thursday, February 16th. Meet there at 10:00 AM. The location is 3702 Cove View, off Seawall Blvd. Contact Richard at [email protected]. Phone- 409/925-7788. Karen Hansen is heading up the Shriners group on Friday, February 17th. You will meet in the Lobby at 9:00 AM. You will need a photo Id. If you would like to be in that group, contact Karen at [email protected]. Phone – 409/770-3209. The children, as well as the nursing home residents, really enjoy this event. New members, I think you would enjoy doing this. Dress is Mardi Gaudy. We may have a limited Krewe beads to throw, but please bring some of your own. Please feel free to contact me with questions. Pre-Parade Party—Yaga’s on the Strand We will be celebrating our pre-parade party at Yaga’s again this year, Friday, February 17 from 6-10pm, during which time we have exclusive use of the restaurant. This event is free to members and $20 CASH for guests. If you are attending the George P. Mitchell award presentation (which we encourage to do) you will just parade into the Strand area for free. If you are unable to do that you can enter at the 21 st street gate for free with a “decorated’ umbrella, Fortunately our Gambrinus umbrellas work, but it is really fun to decorate one as well. I am not sure what the regular fee will be. You are welcome to march in the Funky Uptown Umbrella Brigade starting at 8:30pm. We will provide wristbands at the door so you can come and go as you please, but you must leave your alcohol either in or out of Yagas by law. We have even expanded the menu this year, so it should be even more wonderful. But wait, there’s more- there will be a surprise as well!

Brew Ha-Ha After the parade with 100,000 of your closest friends, join more than 300 other members of your KofG family for the Brew Ha Ha in the Moody Gardens’ Frances Anne Moody Ballroom. Starting at 9:00pm and lasting until 1:00am, take a quick breather after the parade, eat a little something, find out who won the costume contest, learn the theme for next year’s parade, and then dance the night away to a fabulous DJ. We’ll have free beer on tap, and a cash bar for those drinking other spirits. Price: Included with your membership! Guests costs $30 at the door. Please make sure to store your coolers in your vehicles or rooms after the parade, as state and local rules prohibit us from bringing the coolers into the ballroom.

Krewe of Gambrinus

Countdown 2017

Parade day is Saturday, February 18, 2017, at 6:00 pm. The parade staging location is 57th and Seawall Boulevard. There will be bus transportation to the parade site. Only Full MEMBERS, or their alternate, can ride on the floats. Associate Members cannot unless they are a Full Member’s alternate. You must be 21 or older. Insurance reasons make this non-negotiable. You must be on your float by 5:30 pm and start staging your beads, etc. There will be costume judging this year. See your Float Captain for details. Do not attach any posters, flags, signs or any other item to your float. You may have sponsors on your float. Be kind and respectful to them. Be helpful if you can. They help pay for the parade and we want them to always want to come back again. SAFETY ISSUES: These items are for the safety of the riders and the spectators and are part of our insurance requirements. NO SMOKING ON A FLOAT – Your Float Captain has the authority to have you removed if you do – even in the middle of the parade. Wear shoes that are comfortable and provide a firm grip on the wood decks in case of any sudden movements of the float. Pace your drinking so you do not become unstable. We do not want anyone to fall. You will be on the float for about 4 hours. No fighting or causing someone to want to! Be respectful to all your fellow riders. Don’t drink more than you can handle! Do not throw or hand beads to people that come up to the float. This encourages poor behavior that can cause someone to be injured. Do not throw beads when your float is stopped! Know the location of the fire extinguisher on your float. It is near the port-o- potty. PERSONAL ITEMS: You may bring your own snacks and drinks in a small cooler or cold bag. You may bring your own “family friendly” beads and throws. Items that you bring may be left on the float until clean-up at the float barn on Sunday at 12:00 noon. Do not take anything off the float that does not belong to you when you get your belongings! Anything still left on the floats after clean-up may be thrown away and will not be the responsibility of the Krewe. Once the parade begins, you cannot get off the float; even if the float is stopped for a moment. If you get off, your Float Captain may not let you back on. There is a port-o-potty on each float. However, before the parade starts use the ones that will be placed at the staging area. Dispose of your trash properly. Your Float Captain will have plastic garbage bags. DO NOT throw your trash on the street either during the staging time or while the parade is in motion. The Krewe may be fined if you drop any trash on the street. THROWING BEADS: Beads provided by the Krewe will already be stationed at your spot on the float. Do not throw any beads until the parade begins, that will be when your float is on Seawall Boulevard past the Party Zone. Do not throw any beads when your float is stopped. This causes people to come too close to the floats. This is an insurance requirement! You may be asked to leave the float in the middle of the parade if you do not heed this instruction. Always throw your beads to people near the sidewalks. Do not encourage or reward people that come up to the floats for beads. This is a safety and insurance issue! The Parade will end after passing through the Strand. The floats will be routed to Santa Fe where you will be able to board buses that will be parked at Santa Fe and 26th Street. In case of an emergency such as a float breaking down, please make room to accommodate a few of the riders from the broken down float. The Red Suites work quickly and efficiently to get the riders off the broken float and place them along with their beads and belonging on other floats. So please do make room for 4 – 5 riders extra on your float. This could happen to you and you would like for the other floats to accommodate you. You never know what could happen on the parade route. Plan to attend the brew-ha-ha after the parade at The Convention Center. See your Float Captain for information on booking a room.

On Sunday at 12:00 noon, please come to the Float Barn to help clean your float of all trash and remove all sound equipment and other items. 9
