Outline of The Project
1. Objectives and Background of Investigation ◦The existing directory book has indicated limitations in promoting Korean Cosmetic industry internationally or domestically, failing to offer practical help. ◦For this reason, this investigation is to have a thorough grasp of ranges of business and current status of investments and technology by cosmetic companies and to strengthen their industrial competitiveness and to utilize in promoting them overseas by collecting and offering basic data needed for promoting transfer of technology with home and abroad institutions. ◦Also, necessity for systematic and detailed data of industrial current status that can be utilized by companies who are making commitment for the development of cosmetic industry.

◦Hair dye product groups had the largest y-o-y growth; even though it declined in 2006, it bounced back to 19.8% in 2007. Followed by bath, shaving, and face makeup product groups, in the descending order. ◦Skin care product group remained the largest in production and recorded y-o-y growth of 4.3%, and its share in the cosmetic market as a whole stood at 45.9%. Functional product, hair care, and face makeup product groups followed it in the descending order.

□ Korean cosmetic product trade deficit was $448 million in 2007, an increase of $43 million from 2007. ◦In 2007, exports from Korea were $304 million and imports were $752 million. - The largest share of cosmetics products was skin care accounting for 65.5% of Korea's total exports. - China was the largest export market for Korean cosmetics and the value amounted $96.9 million accounting for 31.9% of total exports. It was followed by USA, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan 10.9%, 10.2%, 9.7% and 9.1% respectively. 1) Functional Product : Product that enable whitening of the skin, alleviate of diminish wrinkles, promote even tanning or protect the skin form UV. These products are subject to pre-market screening and registration and special labelling provisions.

◦Korea's cosmetic product trade deficit has worsened despite the export to Korean cultural influencing area(Korean Wave area) has increased. - Exports to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, Iran, China, Mongolia, Malaysia increased respectively 64.4%, 58.1%, 51.2%, 33.5%, 19.9%, 19.4%, 12.8% from the previous year. ◦Corresponding imports from France were $190 million accounting for 25.5% of total imports to Korea. - USA and Japan followed France by 23.3% and 16.9% respectively. 3 countries together takes large proportion of cosmetics imports into Korea.

□ Based on the sales revenue of 44 cosmetic companies registered in the Financial Supervisory Service(FSS) E-Posting System, Korea’s cosmetic market value was estimated KRW 4,623 billion in 2007. ◦Although only 5 companies are listed in KOSPI, but their sales revenue amounted to KRW 2,784 billion, accounting for 60.2% of the total.

◦With 81.2% of Korean cosmetic sales generated by the top 10 companies in 2007, the two big companies take up the large sales portion. - Amore Pacific and LG Household & Health Care consolidated their position in cosmetic industry accounting for 54.7% of total sales revenue. □ 5 Korean companies ranked in the world's top 100 companies by sales revenue in 2007. ◦Of the 100 companies in the world, 34 (38.4%) companies were from the U.S and 16(25.2%) from France. Korea ranked 6th, next to Germany in terms of the sales revenue generated by the 5 companies. However, its total share in the world market was merely 2.0%.

◦The cosmetic market in Europe has the net value of $96.7 billion, accounting for 35.9% of the world’s cosmetic market as a whole. The Asia-Pacific market and the North American market account for 24.1% and 30.7%) of the world market, respectively. Brazil has showed sizable increases in recent years.

◦USA continues to lead the global market, followed by Japan and Brazil. Korea’s cosmetic industry has a rather insignificant presence in the world market accounting for $5.9 billion.
□ Skin care product had the largest market share in the cosmetic market accounting for $60.1 billion in 2006. ◦Cultural preferences have a strong influence on the spending pattern of cosmetics. In Asia-Pacific region, skin care product is far ahead of all other sectors. Meanwhile, preference for hair care is dominant in Latin America region.

□ Procter & Gamble confirmed its position as market leader in cosmetics following the takeover of the Gillette Company in 2005 accounting for 12.7% of total sales. ◦The gap between L'Oreal and Procter & Gamble narrowed down due to the acquisition of The Body Shop in 2006. Johnson & Johnson excelled Japan's Shiseido by ranking 8th in the global market, following its acquisition of Pfizer's Consumer Healthcare division and French manufacturer Laboratoires Vendome. □ Many cosmetic companies have increased their research and development(R&D) expenditure in response to consumer demands, strengthening competitiveness and keeping pace in a environment of fast-paced innovation. ◦Customer loyalty is not as strong as before. As consumers demand various products for different skin types and with special formulas, companies have put more R&D fund in order to meet their demand. ◦L'Oreal is the leading company, having the most R&D expenditure of €559 million with R&D intensity amounting to 3.3% of net sales in 2007, followed by Kao Corp with €272 million.

□ Leading countries on cosmetics in EU allocated large investment on R&D activity. ◦Total R&D spending within an individual country illustrates the importance of the cosmetic market and of its possible effect on the economy. ◦France is the largest market of cosmetics and has large R&D allocations. □ The number of cosmetics patents applied has increased by 388% over the past 25 years in EU, USA, China and Japan. ◦The countries with significant numbers of cosmetics patents are USA, Japan, Germany, and France. The number of patents held by those countries nearly takes up to 55% of the total patents in past 25 years. ◦China, Japan and Germany have had the most growth in the number of patents,

In China, Laneige and Mamonde accelerated their sales in department stores and specialty stores. R&D Figures With a motto of development of clinical and scientifical baby products, Boryung Medience, a special baby care brand, develops and sells products which have been through strict clinical testings and with designs that meet with needs from babies and mothers in Boryung Central Research Center, established in 1982, and by using overseas and domestic certified research centers. Our products' containers describes the attachment and love between mom and baby and they are designed by using stable color and child resistant shape considering babies' eyes, safety and the characteristics of mild and functional (for atopic skin) content. 6 types of Dr. ATOPEACE, special care products for atopic skin, were launched through strict clinical experiments by public institutions such as IRI, U.K and Koryeo Anam Hospital, Korea in 2000. NUK PRESTIGE SKIN CARE lines were launched in June, 2002 after thorough clinical process in 2001. in April 2003, DOCTOR ATOZERO detergent, mold cleaner of washing machine, was launched

and in March and April 2004, in order to respond to hight expectations for well-being age, 3 types of NUK ORGANIC, chemical free skin care products containing 7 organic ingredients, were launched and purified water that have been through 6 stages' purifying process and three types of DOCTOR ATO MILD BABY WET TISSUE were renewed. In 2005, BIENTOT MAMA, dedicated skin medicare products for pregnant women developed with PHARMASCIENCE, France in 1998, was changed into Boryung's own product and two new items were launched and 4 types of PUREGANIC, environment-friendly products which are proper for well-being age. NUK and DOCTOR ATO MILD SKIN CARE lines were renewed with products containing liquid mineral filter, safe UV-screening ingredient and non-sensitive elements to prevent atopy and improved design.
Also, in order to further
strengthen NUK baby feeding products, sponge brushes for milk bottle and teat and baby spout for first train were launched. Especially, disposable milk bottle was developed as the disposable teat can be kept in a separate place and it was applied for patent, improving customers' convenience and quality.

Introduction of Company Since our inception in 1992, Somang Cosmetics was able to grow tremendously with the care of our customers and distinguished quality and marketing strategies of the company. It was with these two components that Somang Cosmetics was able to produce hit brands from 'Man with Flowers' Skin Shower Cleansing to Color Lotion recently. With the belief in spreading and practicing the love of Jesus Christ, I personally began helping and donating to the Siloam Optometry hospital long before Somang Cosmetics opened its doors. When the company was better stabilized in 1995, 1% of the total sales was donated for the purpose. In 1999, Somang Cosmetics began donating an additional 1% of the total sales for humanitarian aid for the hungry children of North Korea. This past year, a donation was given to the World Vision. We are endeavoring to fulfill the words in the Bible, which states that "Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right." The mission of Somang cosmetics is to enhance the beauty of the human race. In order to also take responsibility for the health of the human race, Somang has taken a step further and entered into medicine manufacturing as Somang Pharmacy. Through the birth of Somang Life, we hope to satisfy our customers through adopting the positive aspects of networking sale system.
