HATSU BON SERVICE

Sunday, July 26, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. Guest Speaker: Reverend Shinkai Murakami, Resident minister at Wailuku Hongwanji Japanese Service at 10:30 a.m. Obon (Kangi-e/Ullambana-gathering. The origin of Obon can be traced to the Ullambana Sutra, which relates to the story of Mahamaudgalyayana (Mogallana in Pali), the most gifted of Sakyamuni Buddha’s disciples in the area of extraordinary sense perceptions. The story teaches the importance of hearing the Buddha’s teachings and observing the precepts. In realizing the compassion of the Buddha, Mahamaudgalyayana was so overjoyed that he clapped his hands and danced about. This is said to have been the beginning of the Bon Odori (traditional Japanese dances on Obon Day.) Obon, therefore being an occasion for rejoicing in the awakening offered by the Buddha, is an opportunity to express gratitude not only to ancestors, but to all who have passed on. Therefore it is often referred to as Kangi-e, “Gathering of Joy”.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Another successful O-Bon Festival! Our 12th!! With generous donations of food items by the Kyodan board and others, a delicious bento of yakitori chicken and a delicious and refreshing somen salad were made with the help of Carol Ikeda and sold at our fundraising concession. Saimin and Chad Yamamoto’s famous teriyaki sticks were also sold. It is the first time, in my tenure, that the temple has participated in the O-Bon Festival, selling food in partnership with the Keauhou Shopping Center restaurants. We hope to keep this tradition, as Japanese food was not a part of this occasion, previously. L & L has Chinese food, and the Thai restaurant serves fried rice, pad thai and chicken satay, but at an O-Bon Festival, the Japanese menu was missing until now. Many thanks to the many hands that annually raise the tents and set up the tables and chairs and lighting. Many thanks to the many hands that raise the Yagura and the Japanese colored lanterns. These are our precious ‘roots’ the hold the temple up…the Boy Scouts, their leaders and parents that the temple sponsors; the Shinwakai which keeps O-

Bon traditions alive with the Yagura and the ‘tera tera bozu’ to keep the rain away; the Taiko group which organizes the program of music and makes invitations to Daifukuji Taiko and Randall and his ‘sister’ to spice up the program as well! Most of all, thank you to the dancers, experienced and just ‘experimenting’ for making it so festive. (I was in there…at least for the four songs I know!) We hope to see you at our temple’s O-Bon to dance with, and for, Hatsubon families who have lost loved ones since our last O-Bon. I’ll be looking for you on July 25. Please join me on August 9 for our next fundraising adventure!! Bring all your golfing friends to our Golf Tournament at Big Island Country Club. Look for details in this edition of the Jiho and help our newest and MOST ENERGETIC (tied with Betty Takeoka) board member in Member Welfare, Aaron Nagata. If you can’t golf, we can use donations of water, anything that can be used as prizes, or a little monetary help for Aaron to use to make it successful! In Gassho

SEASON OF BON--SIMPLE, YET PROFOUND

by Bruce Y. Nakamura

OBON ORIGINS Possibly the most popular religious highlight for Hawaiian Buddhists is the welcoming of the annual Bon season during the months of June, July and August. All across the state of Hawaii, diverse cultural and religious backgrounds converge on temple grounds to celebrate throughout with services, dancing and fellowship. The term, "Bon" is derived from the Urabon or Ullambana Sutra. The original sanskrit term is Avamlambana meaning, literally "to hang upside down". It was believed that religious service afforded merit for the dead who is saved from the "hellish" torment in the next life of being "hung upside down". The sutra states how Maudgalyayana (Mokuren, Jpnse.) saved his mother from the realm of hungry ghosts (gaki,

4

Jpnse) by making offerings to the company of the Buddha's monks on the 15th day of the 7th month in retreat. The Pravana retreat held during the Indian monsoon season is when monks were restricted from travel to avoid hurting and killing smaller forms of life. With the legendary account of the early sangha's intervention, this popular tale concludes with the peaceful repose of Mokuren's mother and seven family generations. Overjoyed, Mokuran leaped into the air clapping his hands and began to dance with joy. This early legend traces the origin of Obon. (Reference: A Dictionary of Japanese Buddhist Terms by Hisao Inagaki; c.1984;pp 255-6). The Japanese Obon dance began during the Muromachi period (1400-30). This form of dance is known as "hayashi-mono" developing in two aspects: 1) dancing in a circle around a raised platform (yagura); and 2) dancing in step formation in a straight line. The ceremony of welcoming and sending off earth-nature and ancestral-family spirits are found in the popular practices of China, Korea and Japan. These popular forms came into Buddhist ceremony and ritual dance to pray the visiting spirits for protection and well-being for the living. LEGACY OF DIVERSITY In a diverse and ever evolving community where cultures migrate from different parts of the world, Hawaii has become a rich hodge-podge of histories and ethnicities that continue to change up to the present. Asian cultures for the most part, uplift the legacy of family and cultural histories to stimulate the basis to personal identity while being challenged by futures shared for opportunity and prosperity. As Buddhism spread throughout Asia, its streams flowed into the Hawaii territory that would be become the 50th state, U.S.A. For the most part, Japanese immigrants could not accumulate the wealth to return to their village homes in Japan. Most accepted the harsh reality they would have to stay and eventually marry and raise a family. After almost a 1,000 years of Japanese Buddhism bound to feudal Japan, overseas missions as far away places like Hawaii, the north American continent, Brazil and Canada were born on western soil. Today in the 21st century, American Buddhists face new challenges to share the Dharma through many expressions and pathways. We are no longer habitually bound by tradition and culture. We've all, but lost it in the fervor to become fiercely independent as American citizens, whatever that can mean. To be Japanese does not mean to be Buddhist. To genuinely thrive as a dharma travelor of our inspirational founder, Shinran Shonin, we must develop and live the teachings of our Dharma masters, teachers and family who have opened the pathway of the Nembutsu by example. Interdependence, Change & Uncertainty Though we as American Hawaii clergy look to our "mother-temple Hongwanji" and its leaderships for guidance and innovation, we, on a practical level, experience the living dharma teaching by those we come into contact every day. Recent memorials celebrating the lives and birth into the Pure Land of Ellen Tamaki Harano of Kona and Sadami Hamamoto of Hilo are such persons who exemplify the simple, yet profound truth of life's inexhaustible treasures in gratitude. Ellen Tamaki not ever scolded or admonished the younger ones helping with the Manju-making projects throughout the year. Ellen simply guided by example with a quiet and beautiful confidence and joy. With so many no longer bound to unwritten ethnic and cultural inhibitions, let us open our hearts, hands and behavior welcoming and teaching the younger and the unfamiliar to the cultural bounties of our Japanese and Buddhist customs. The Obon season is not the exception. Sadami Hamamoto of Hilo Betsuin and a former internment camp detainee, enjoyed coming early in the morning and on weekends to gather the discarded greens and wilted flowers from the altars to spread in her gardens and landscape. This was just one of many joys in her life that was a beautiful source for me to share the limitless gratitude of great compassion. And how they lived - both of them, is how they died -- their hands and feet of the heart diligently and beautifully working in their garden and coffee field. I am so amazed by the simple, yet most profound truth they evoke to me. That though life can be difficult with hardships and filled with change and uncertainties, we are all so simply, yet profoundly connected by an indestructible compassion that bind us to light and life. Please enjoy the Bon season and see our jiho newsletter and West Hawaii publications for Kona Hongwanji's sponsored community Obon and Hatsubon services. EnJoy...!

TAIKO GROUP NEWS th

On June 13, 2015, the Taiko Group performed at the 12 Annual O-Bon Festival held at the Keauhou Shopping Center. There were lots of people dancing the night away honoring the deceased. JORDAN CIRIAKO and KRISTYN KATAYAMA, Senior Instructors of the Taiko Group, returned home from Oahu to perform with the group. Jordan also choreographed a performance to introduce the members of the group. As Junior Instructors MICHAEL GUSMAN, KELSEY KATAYAMA and TRENT TERADA and also Head Instructors, DAREN KATAYAMA and ALAN MATSUMOTO drummed, Jordan introduced the rest of the members of the Taiko Group, like a referee at a wrestling match, to the opening theme song, "Pride", of a defunct Japanese Mixed Martial Arts Association. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our fundraising tables at the O-Bon Festival and purchased an item or two. Thank you to WENDY TEREADA and her friend, ALEX for helping out. Following the theme, the planners arranged to have a helicopter land on the football field. All the participating scouts and Adult volunteers got a tour of the helicopter and spoke to the pilots. Other activities were BB Gun, Archery, songs & skits and Pilot Training (agility, balance & hand eye coordination). Everyone was treated to a spaghetti dinner. Saturday the 6th was held at Konawaena High School pool & parking lot. The activities were: slip and slide, swimming, catch, catch & duck, obstacle course and Ultimate Frisbee. Thank you to all the scout parents that helped as Adult volunteers. Our very own Nurse Mrs Dee Ono volunteered to be the First Aid Person for the two day event. Pinewood Derby Saturday, June 6th was the long awaited Kona District pinewood derby race. Because Makahiki was held in Hilo this year, Jody Jennings and Cub Master Glenn Hirowatari felt it was only fair to hold a race in Kona for those that could not travel all the way to Hilo to participate in the pinewood derby race there. Thank you to Cub Master Glenn for arranging with Konawaena High School to secure the gym as a venue for the race. And Thank You to Jody Jennings and his crew for setting up the track and running the race. Our own Bear cub scout, Abraham Ogata won first place in his age group and Tiger cub Ethan Ogata came in 3rd in his age group.
