1 General Information about ETS 1.1 ETS Distribution Methods The ETS can be downloaded free of charge from the KNX Online Shop provided that one creates an account. After having downloaded the entire program, one can install it on a PC of one’s choice. After installation, the program will however run in demo mode, i.e. the program can be tried out and projects with up to three devices can be created and commissioned. In order to have a fully functional ETS program, it is necessary to acquire a license key. It is possible to license the software: Either linked to a particular PC hardware (“PC Dependent”): the above license key only allows unlocking the software license on the PC, of which the customer has provided a code called ‘Host-ID’. This PC code can be viewed directly in the licensing window of ETS: in order to create the license key, the ‘Host-ID’ shall be entered in the Online Shop account of the customer.  

Disadvantage: if PC hardware changes, a new license key has to be requested at KNX. Advantage: ETS license can never be “stolen”.

Either linked to USB key called ‘dongle’ to be bought at KNX (“PC independent”), which can be mounted in a free USB slot of the PC on which ETS is installed and the license key has been stored.  

Advantage: full flexibility, ETS can be run on any PC hardware thanks to dongle. Disadvantage:  ETS license is lost when losing the dongle  Somewhat more expensive license type.

1.2 Licensing of ETS KNX offers to acquire a license key directly online via its (multi-lingual) online shop (https://onlineshop.knx.org). Customer sales and technical support is given exclusively by KNX Brussels (no local distribution centres). To acquire a license key, the customer shall create his own account in the KNX online shop and place the order for the desired license. The customer has the possibility to pay online (with credit card) or request payment by bank transfer. Once payment is received, the customer can fetch in his own account in the KNX online shop the license key to unlock the installed ETS software package and KNX will dispatch the purchased dongle (if any). In view of the possibility to pay online, temporary license keys (i.e. keys that only activate the software for a specific period of time) are no longer granted.

1.3 ETS Versions Four versions of ETS are available: ETS Professional; ETS Professional is the ETS Edition for the trained or experienced KNX contractor, installer or integrator ETS Professional enables the planning/design and commissioning of KNX installations of any size (max. number of addresses, max. number of devices, unlimited number of projects…) The ETS is available in many languages, for which language packs are available at no extra cost. ETS Supplementary; It is possible to “clone” one full ETS Professional onto two further PCs, at reduced license fees. The supplementary licenses are especially intended for use on laptops, used at the construction side. The full license from which the supplementary versions were derived is intended as the license for use in the office. There is no difference in functionality between the ETS Professional and an ETS Supplementary license. ETS Lite Version; • The ETS Lite Version is identical to the ETS Professional version but allows only projects with max. 20 devices. • This version is especially intended for (certified and uncertified) training centres and their customers. The Manufacturer version of ETS (called “ETS MT”); The manufacturer version of ETS enables KNX Association manufacturers to export KNX application data as ETS databases and submit them to KNX Association for registration/certification. The data cannot be read into the ETS end-user version until it has been released by KNX Association.

1.4 Additional KNX Software Tools KNX Association offers the following software tools or libraries in addition to ETS: iETS Server: The counterpart to the existing iETS Client in ETS. This software tool is typically installed on a PC in an installation, which one would like to access via Internet (remote diagnostics/remote programming). The PC, on which the iETS server is installed, is connected to both Internet, as well as KNX. Falcon Driver Library: This powerful COM library for PC enables the realization of bus access via Windows-based PC tools. The Interworking Test Tool (EITT): this tool is used by developers and test laboratories when testing the KNX conformity of devices in development. Also KNX members offer a number of KNX related software packages: KNX OPC-Server: This software can be used as a basis for easy visualisation applications and complies with the OPC Standard (OLE for Process Control) for Windows. Many manufacturers offer visualisation tools in their own right. In exceptional cases, manufacturers offer their own commissioning tools for complex devices that cannot be put in operation using ETS or they supply so-called ETS plugin modules together with their product database. The latter are automatically called up by ETS after the installation when configuring the device concerned. These plug-in software packages are in most cases needed to plan and parameterize the relevant product in another view than the common ETS list view. Some ETS subcontractors distribute add-on modules to ETS, allowing to extend the functionality of ETS, e.g. for graphical project design, re-engineering, macros (for project data exchange, efficient project engineering...).

1.5 ETS Hotline and Reporting Errors If errors are detected in ETS, they shall be reported in writing directly to KNX Association. It is preferable to report errors via the support menu in your respective Online Shop account: these errors are then examined by the KNX support department and answered in writing (no support by telephone). Via the Diagnostics Wizard in ETS you can have quick access to run an automatic diagnosis of the software problems you are experiencing: this diagnosis will save the result of the diagnosis in a file on your hard disk: this file can then be sent to KNX Association via the Support menu of your KNX Online Shop account. Preferably the logging level is set to the highest possible level before starting the diagnosis (in the ETS tab ‘Settings – function “Troubleshooting). Based on these error reports, updates of ETS are made available at specific intervals. ETS will automatically inform and allow installation when such updates are available, provided the PC is connected to the Internet.
