Knowing what to expect makes for a comfortable visit.

Welcome to Lehigh Magnetic Imaging Center. We always strive to exceed your expectations. We’d like to start now by helping you prepare for your visit.

When You Arrive First, relax. Before the MRI, you will need to fill out a medical questionnaire and insurance consent — unless, of course, you completed them online, in which case we’ll print them for you. Either way, don’t worry we’ll give you plenty of time to do the paperwork. Also, be sure to notify us at this time if your doctor has prescribed medication for your study. Finally, let us know if anyone will accompany you into the exam room. Now, time to put on the gown. A hospital gown is required so clothing doesn’t interfere with the images the MRI scanner takes. At Lehigh Magnetic Imaging Center, we’ll even give you pants to wear. At this time removable objects that could contain metal such as jewelry, hearing aids, dentures and all personal articles must be taken off and placed in a secure locker provided to you.

Next, meet your technologist. Your MRI technologist will review your medical history with you and answer any questions you may have. Your technologist also serves as your guide throughout the process.

During Your MRI

How to Prepare

The technologist will help you get comfortably positioned, monitor the session and is available to communicate and assist you throughout the exam. That’s it, but keep in mind:

There is little to do in the way of special preparations for an MRI. For instance, you can eat normally, but might want to avoid caffeine since you will have to lie still. Here are a few more tips to make your time with us go as planned:

• If your study requires a contrast injection, let the technologist know if you’ve ever had an allergic reaction

• Take medications as directed unless otherwise instructed

• Some people find it calming to close their eyes during the exam

• Avoid wearing metal such as jewelry, hairpins and watches

• It’s important to remain still and breathe normally at all times

• Avoid wearing makeup and hairspray, especially if you are having an MRI or MRA of the brain or eye area

• Since an MRI magnet makes a variety of sounds, we will give you earplugs and offer a selection of music for your comfort

After Your MRI A written report will be sent to your doctor in one to two business days. Please speak to your doctor for the results. If you or your doctor requires a CD of the study, speak to the receptionist. Past that, you are done and free to resume your normal activities.

• Locate prior exams (MRI, CT, x-ray, ultrasound) of the same body part being scanned to bring with you • Follow any special instructions provided when your appointment was scheduled • If you’d like to fill out required forms ahead of time, you can do so at our website, www.lehighvalleymri.com, and click on Appointments

MRI Precautions MRI exams are safe, but there are certain safety measures that should be followed. Be sure to inform our staff if you have any of the following: • Pacemaker, internal defibrillator or pacemaker wires, loop recorder, programmable shunts or artificial heart valves
