Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

Our Mission: to maintain a living museum for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of all people. KLEHM ARBORETUM & BOTANIC GARDEN | 2715 S. MAIN ST. | ROCKFORD, IL 61102 | klehm.org | 815.965.8146

Reflections 2015 Dear Friends of Klehm, This past year was a busy one at Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden. A new garden was added to the hill behind the Visitor Center. This Contemporary Perennial Garden, a mosaic of over 4,000 plants of 40 species, will welcome visitors as they enter the grounds from the Visitor Center. A generous grant from the CN Railroad funded this beautiful expansion. In addition, our Plant-a-Row Garden harvested one ton of fresh produce and we donated the bounty to the Rock River Valley Pantry. Klehm’s educational programing expanded with the establishment of a new Boy Scout merit badge program. The existing John and Pauline Cook Horticultural Lecture Series, the Young Explorers youth program and Neighborhood Naturalist adult summer programs were all well attended and will continue to provide for community involvement. Klehm was also deeply involved in representing Dan Riggs Rockford in the national ‘America in Bloom’ competition, which recognized Rockford Executive Directorwith honors in outstanding Urban Forestry and Residential Streetscapes, such as Harlem and Calvin Park Boulevards.

Access to Klehm has been greatly improved this year. Critical road and urban renewal projects, nearing completion along South Main Street, are facilitating Klehm’s contribution to the beautification of the city’s southern gateway and Rockford’s historic district. Along with the Board of Directors, we extend our sincere appreciation to the individuals, corporations, foundations and the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County who provided generous funding and support for Klehm’s ongoing operations. Collectively, we have planted a solid foundation for our community’s Living Museum.

America in Bloom A giant volunteer planting effort took place on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Klehm Arboretum. Over 50 volunteers started planting 4,000 perennials in a 13,000 square foot Contemporary Perennial Garden. The "Know Maintenance" site was planned for minimal weed invasion and optimal beauty by Roy Diblick, noted plantsman and designer. Funds to purchase the plant stock were received via a grant of $23,500 from CN EcoConnexions "From the Ground Up" program in the U.S. Grant recipients were chosen on the basis of criteria developed by America in Bloom and were based on planned positive outcomes in the community, community engagement and long-term sustainability of plants. The Forest City was a competitor in the 2015 America in Bloom event coordinated by Klehm.

It will take three years for the new garden to establish itself enough to choke out pesky weeds. After that, minimal maintenance will be needed to keep the garden looking its best and the varying perennial bloom times will keep the hill a breathtaking sight throughout the spring and summer months. This Contemporary Perennial Garden recently received Monarch Habitat Certification and should be elegantly dotted with butterflies in the spring!

The mission of the Klehm Arboretum Foundation, Inc. is to ensure the long term growth and stability of Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden by providing sustained funding support through the proceeds of the Bur Oak Fund, established in 2007. The goal of Klehm Arboretum Foundation is to endow one million dollars through the acceptance of donations and legacy gifts via trusts, wills, and other legal documents. Since its inception, the Bur Oak Endowment Fund has grown to approximately $300,000 with the help of The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, generous donors and participation in two Carroll H. Starr Endowment Challenges. The second of the Carroll H. Starr Endowment Challenge campaigns (2013) yielded $30,714 in charitable donations earning a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois. The Bur Oak Fund is held and managed by The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois. An endowment gift permanently restricts the principal of the gift. A distribution of the earnings are made annually to support general operations, programs or campaigns.

Thank You Volunteers! Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve.... You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. ~Martin Luther King, Jr.
