Syscon Pte Ltd, is a family owned business that has grown to be the largest concrete precast manufacturer in the country with over 30 years of experience in buildings and construction. Leveraging on the facilities and skillset which Syscon has built over the years, it has decided to launch a new development in conjunction with the government’s plans for land intensification as well as increased productivity and efficiency of workers. This includes the implementation of compulsory Pre-cast Bathroom Units (PBUs) for all future housing developments, for both public housing and private condominiums. As this is an initiative from both the Building & Construction Authority (BCA) and the Housing and Development Board (HDB) of Singapore, Syscon who has been the pioneer in precast will once again be the main driving force to increase productivity and efficiency. Syscon is also the only pre-caster with mold-making capabilities as well as our own logistics fleet to cater to the requirement. The government’s sentiment of increasing productivity for foreign workers has had a great impact on Syscon since we have over 500 foreign workers. Syscon constantly strives to follow the government’s objectives and this new development will add a production space of 430,000 square feet. This increased production line and space will mean that the products of Syscon’s precast components are tripled to an output of 30,000 cubic metre per month. Indeed, not only will productivity increase given technology advancements but with the increased 4

production lines, Syscon is looking towards a more efficient method of producing its prefab panels for HDBs by better equipping ourselves to cater to the needs of Singaporeans. Working in line with what the government hopes to achieve due to limited supply of land in Singapore, we are increasing land intensification by moving towards a 4-storey production unit instead of a single floor. Syscon has undertaken much research and development before launching the very first PBU in Singapore. With this new development, the area will also be able to provide multi-level fabrication of these PBUs, thereby meeting the needs of all developments in the coming years.

Having said the above, with Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA)’s plan to raise land allocation for industry and commerce from 13% to 17% by 2030, we see this development as a contribution to the land use target. The intentions of this huge investment focus largely on increasing productivity of our production plant with increased machinery and output, as well as a better working environment for all our workers. In a bid to improve their welfare and thereby increasing productivity levels, an increased and revamped foreign talent housing that comes with full-fledged amenities is part of this new development too. Syscon is slated to begin construction of this new facility by 2016. 5

Starting an empire in 1961 was no easy feat for the Aparici family. From humble beginnings of red body wall tile production, the company today boasts a production capacity of 14.5 million square metres of tiles annually. Aparici has indeed established themselves as a pioneering brand of flooring many trust. The Aparici family was forwardlooking. They wanted something different. Something to call their very own. With this spirit of innovation, Apavisa was born. Their vision to provide only quality products and impeccable service has always been at the forefront of their business model. Hard work, innovation and experience are inherent characteristics seen throughout the entire design and production process.

“To create a design that is unique, innovative and totally different from what regular factories produce in the market. We are not a conventional brand.” Aparichi : Sonar

12

13

Apavisa Tiles: Hydraulic

We have to concede that the strategy Aparici devised has been successful. Directing your train of thought to Aparici, it is a brand with exuberant designs and colours. It is a brand catered for the masses, where an array of colour options are available. They have pieces that do not shout their presence but would be feasible for large spaces in terms of pricing and quality. But they too, have ranges which are dominated by geometric shapes that can easily create a minimalist, cosy or modern outlook. The perks of being in this market for over 50 years are manifold. The experience of creating the right kind of products, with surpassing quality comes easy to Aparici. Here at Design Hub, we are constantly inspired by Aparici and Apavisa’s creations that utilise colours, textures and shapes expertly. Till then, we hope to constantly bring you on a unique and creative venture with both brands. Aparici Tiles : Vanguard System

Wave. Bump. Curve. Diagonal. Hexagonal. These are shapes unimaginable on tiles. But, this is what Apavisa has made possible today. Arch concept - the range with 3-Dimensional effects was precisely the answer to the restrictions architects and designers faced. With a keen eye, the company noticed the common gripes of designers over flat, uninteresting and boring porcelain tiles. Seeking to resolve this sticky situation, the rise of its affiliate brand was an opportunity they saw. Albeit taking a risk with embarking on an entirely new concept, the initiative of offering a whole new comprehensive range was the solution to advance in the market. More than often, we are impressed with the designs from Apavisa and Aparici. But we often neglect the key importance of how Apavisa succeeded. It is bringing different elements together to create a set of motifs for consumers who are increasingly discerning towards porcelain tiles these days. Oozing with style and creativity, 14

your senses are stimulated as a tactile element is incorporated. All of these design elements are kept in mind while challenging shapes are put together. “We wanted to create a design that is unique, innovative and totally different from what regular factories produce in the market. We are not a conventional brand.” said Pedro Miralles, the commercial director for Apavisa. Indeed, Apavisa produces higher end porcelain tiles as compared to Aparici. It is one of the best and most unique of its kind in the market. If you’re looking for accent pieces or a signature piece in your space such as a feature wall, chances are, you will be directed to Apavisa. Despite being 2 entirely different entities, Apavisa and Aparici share the same deep roots of producing only the highest quality of materials and providing only the best services to their clients. The perks of leveraging on what Aparici has developed in terms of its research and development has been a great helping hand to Apavisa.

Wood flooring is one of the most common flooring that people use. In recent years, engineered wood flooring has surged in popularity due to its many advantages. So, what exactly is engineered wood flooring and what are the benefits of using it?

16

17

Now, let us delve into the world of engineered wood flooring. Engineered wood flooring is constructed using multiple ply layers. It is subsequently bonded together, beneath a layer of genuine wood veneer, under high heat and pressure. With this construction, it increases stability and durability as compared to regular solid wood flooring. Unlike furniture and wallpapers, flooring is much harder to replace as frequently. For this reason, choosing the right woodwork is important. After searching high and low, we have finally found the perfect one – Listone Giordano. It is easy to believe that all wood floors are similar, but please do not be mistaken. To enjoy the luxury of engineered wood flooring, Listone Giordano is no doubt your first choice. And Listone Giordano made it evident that only they could produce the best wooden flooring and fittings. What’s more, engineered wood flooring tend to be a more sustainable option. It uses lesser timber as compared to solid wood planks and in turn, conserves our forests. Nothing beats being environmentally responsible! Plans to protect the environment are actually schemes to prevent a fatal condition - environmental pollution. Sustainability is a priority of ours, and we believe that it is yours too. Listone Giordano, the guardian of Mother Earth, has vested an interest in playing their part in improving global forest conservation. From the cultivation of trees to the actual production, the entire process is managed to maintain the environmental equilibrium. In addition, all the materials sourced are from its own forest at Fontaines, which is one of the most sustainable sources of hardwood globally.

18

“We plant trees and the trees then plant us since we belong to each other and we must coexist.”

Being certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC), UNI ISO 9001 and many more, Listone Giordano strictly adheres to environmental standards. These standards guarantee that Listone Giordano limits all the activities – emission of gases, industrial wastages, sewage leakages, which could have a significant impact on the environment. As we all know, the environment plays a great part in child development. Thus, the littlest thing makes the biggest difference. Are you tired of dust mites that would cause allergy to asthma in children? Now, fret not. Listone Giordano does not accumulate any dust mites. So, now we have a healthy forest, a healthy you, and a healthy bundle of joy playing around freely.

19

Heat treated Ashwood

Besides being eco-friendlier, maintaining the flooring is as easy as pie. It is more resistant to moisture, hence damages due to humidity or water is near to impossible (no panic during spillages)! With the proper maintenance, Listone Giordano could last through time. You can hand it down from one generation to the next. Consequently, creating a kind of nostalgia for you. The list of benefits is endless – though we may be a little biased since we are indeed pretty obsessed with Listone Giordano. It is an art – not science. With the true look of wood veneer, every piece of Listone Giordano is a masterpiece.

Community Apavisa Tiles : Terratec Grey

A brand new section brought to you by Design Hub. While we were brainstorming for this magazine, we wanted to value-add to our readers. We saw the need to foster closer relationships within this community. With an increasing group of discerning clients in Singapore and possibly Asia, the design community is definitely facing a different set of challenges. We have decided to interview a couple of designers and architects based locally to increase your mutual understanding with them. This includes interesting Q&A sessions, an insightful interpretation of designers and architects’ jobs as well as a snippet of what to expect in the coming year. Who knows but this could possibly result in a greater understanding for the work they do and minimise interactions which could otherwise create friction. In a bid to initiate a relationship for those within and outside the community, we hope that this section would be able to inspire you. May this section benefit you as much as it did for us. 62

DH: Is technology limiting your boundaries or does it work as a push factor?

MS: Technology affects your life

Distillery The debate about what constitutes ‘good design’ is a never-ending one. The way it looks, the function it serves, the strength and success of the materials used, its ability to better your life or transport you to another place or simply perhaps, the emotions it evokes are key considerations. Walking into the Manhattan bar in Singapore’s Regent hotel for the first time, was for me, an emotional experience and one that brought these questions to mind. It’s by no means obvious that this is a bar in Singapore, let alone a bar in a hotel that has somehow eluded the clutches of modernity. The space is luxurious and considered, theatrical yet practical, subtle vignettes at every turn and the materials used speak volume about its designers. What makes it even more impressive, is that the designers are the founders of a small interior design practice based in Singapore and one which has gone from fledgling to fab in a mere 8 years. Design Hub recently met up Matthew Shang, Creative Director and one half the Distillery founding team (Paul Semple being the other director), who shared some of his ideas and philosophies about design. Here’s what we discovered.. 64

DH: Matthew, I believe you are now believe building forms and geography what we consider a long time resident of Singapore and as such, would have seen quite a bit of change. What is your vision for the future city of Singapore?

MS: Hi. I am a long time resident of

Singapore and wow, this is quite the question and one that we could talk and debate about for hours. A good starting point to answer your question is to reflect on how far Singapore has come. How many of us would have predicted the extraordinary change in architecture, food, design, and community we have seen in the last 10 years alone. I recall trying to find a humble salad sandwich or even asking where I could buy organic vegetables when I first moved here, both of which were greeted with blank looks. From this to a continually evolving city with serious international status is a massive shift. I believe that Singapore’s evolution will continue in a positive way. The positive evolution in the F&B scene, hotel and entertainment offering and residential developments which put humans at its core will certainly continue. What’s lacking though and a change that we would love to see is a conscious effort and active response to resources or lack thereof. Singapore is reliant on imported resources which is why I

will eventually change. I am convinced that buildings will eventually need to move to neutral or passive cooling systems as the rising costs of running an air-conditioned building will become untenable. I personally would love to see other forms of energy being utilised, solar as an example, which, with advanced technology, would be much more subtle in appearance and even more effective in function.

depending on how you manage and interact with it. We know that the information available on the web is practically limitless. At the same time however, there is also an element of saturation. Pinterest is a good example here. I enjoy and interact with Pinterest daily. The images of interiors and decors you discover can be inspiring however as you scroll through the pages and you discover the same images over and over again. People are pinning the same ideas thus ideas are being repeated then repeated again. There’s nothing wrong with a ‘copy and paste’ mentality however, images eventually lose their ’power’ and we enter territory where ‘good design’ or ‘good taste’ is not really shat we think it is but rather the product of a mass consensus. What is important then is that you explore these images for awareness, yet not sink into them. Technology should serves as a really good reference and not a solution.

DH: What is one piece of advice you would give to new designers?

MS: Design is a vocation. You have to

live it at all moments of the day. Design is about providing an environment for people and isn’t just about image. It’s all about creating experiences and the right level of emotional engagement for the end user.

DH: Could let us in on what inspires you or where you find inspiration?

MS: My library. I have invested time

and money in a library that provides with inspiration and a place to escape to. Leafing through pages and images is sometimes enough whilst reading extensively is what I need at others. I personally find (and need) an organized area and home so that I can work and be inspired unencumbered by random thoughts and visual clutter. Clearing my workspace, home and mind is an essentially component of my process and one that I do regularly.

DH: Which of your projects is your DH: What are some of the problems favourite and why?

MS: A recent favourite is undoubtedly

the Manhattan Bar in Regent Hotel, Singapore. It works on so many levels though what I love most is the level of engagement customers have with the space. It is a space which elicits emotions – there is a sense of anticipation, excitement, theatre as well as an overall sense of community with the loyal regular following it has attracted. In terms of ‘creating’ Manhattan, each of the teams who worked on the project believed and worked towards an overall vision that remained consistent throughout the design and construction process. It’s really when the vision behind the venture is carried through from the design stage to the day to day operations that a venue finds its voice.

you faced while starting Distillery? And how did you manage to overcome it?

MS: Starting your own practice brings

along the challenge of overcoming expectations on what it is to running your own practice and business. Clients come from the most random of places and sources. Terrific mentors definitely help. My personal belief is that if you don’t know something, asking someone or rather, several people. What they think or what they would do in a situation provides you with alternative ways to approach a situation. This is invaluable. People can be incredibly generous with their time and advice particularly when they might be helping you through challenging times. I believe in taking up help when it is offered and in return offering your respect, appreciation and thanks.

The entire process with Manhattan was not only smooth, it was great. The initiative from the team at The Regent in that they knew exactly what they wanted to achieve was a solid staring point. The extraordinary beverage consultants added a creative and inspirational layer and finally, the owner who really wanted to create a luxurious and modern take on a grand hotel bar where he and his friends could comfortably hang out, were further factors which contributed to the creation of a successful space. Each element gave us at Distillery ideas and options to explore. 65

Open Concept Pantry

Walkway from the outdoor zone to the pantry

Park + Associates In the heart of a small and dynamic city like Singapore, we are guilty of spending too much time in our offices. Are you one of them?

and constructing this whole office is no easy feat. But this is exactly what sets Park + Associates apart from the rest. And once again, they have proven their expertise with their innovative interpretation of the office.

No matter what your line of business is, an inviting office space sure helps.

If they gaining attention with their design was their intention, they have certainly succeeded! The office, with its spatial layout, is reminiscent of a quirky cafe tucked away in a hip enclave. The open concept that defines their pantry also allows for impromptu team bonding sessions and lunch gatherings.

When we first stepped into the office of Park + Associates, we wondered if it was really an office! Lured by an inviting smell, one is led into their workspace that features both a living space and an impressive open-concept pantry. Every detail is highlighted through the skilful use of colours, materials and light, giving the inviting workspace a refreshing appearance. Jealous, we certainly are!

Step into the realm of an open office concept. By working basic monochromatic colours with a striking open layout, even the grumpiest colleague can’t help but smile in the mornings. A pretty smart move from the designer of this place!

Defined by their passion, Park + Associates has created such an alluring workspace for their employees. No one does it better than the experts in the field. Designing, conceptualising Outdoor area

comprises of a cutting-edge design. We transform celebrity restaurants as well as those in the premise of renowned hotels. The challenge of balancing both the functionality and aesthetics becomes ever more important in a restaurant. The showcase of a practical design for each restaurant is different and hence, it is hard to pick a personal favourite.

DH: What are some key considerations when designing a space?

SB: The design needs to show a sense

of belonging in that place. Every design needs to respond like a tailorfitted suit to the client. This applies for all projects.

DH: What are some of the challenges you faced? And how did you overcome it?

SB: Speed. A design needs to be well

Wilson Associates Despite being a small city, Singapore has forged an identity of a small yet vibrant and ever-evolving country, earning a name for herself. One of the key elements that pushes Singapore forward has to be the architecture within her. And what exactly is the driving force for the architecture sector in Singapore? Today, Design Hub was fortunate to speak to one of the hospitality giants in Singapore - Wilson Associates. Why the hospitality segment, you may ask. Tourism is one of the major contributor in an economy like ours. No doubt about that. And a very important thing to highlight, the food and beverage (F&B) market is a huge one that caters both to locals as well as foreigners. What can be better than an interview with the man who understands both the F&B as well as the hospitality market in Singapore. Hence, we interviewed Stephan Brutti, the Associate Design Director in Blueplate Studios, a department within Wilson Associates. Blueplate Studios was created in 2007 as 68

a studio of Wilson Associates, offering clients specialised restaurant design solutions. While Wilson Associates creates new definitions of luxury for an era that is increasingly connected and culturally diverse, Blueplate Studios adds on a philosophy of providing the client with an all encompassing culinary experience. A few local restaurants that are designed by Blueplate include Hai Tien Lo in Pan Pacific Hotel, LaBrezza in St. Regis Singapore and II Cielo in Hilton Singapore. Who doesn’t like a restaurant that serves good food infused with interesting restaurant concepts to complete a sophisticated experience? Here are some questions we have asked to allow you to understand Stephan a little better as well as his thoughts and advice for rising designers:

DH: What do you think determines a city?

And any movement sparks off from a group of people who wants to achieve their goals.

DH: What is your vision for the future of Singapore?

SB: One that continues to embrace

the vibrant ambition of Singapore and what she wants to be in the eyes of the world. Searching deeper into the consciousness of what it is to be a Singaporean, design should definitely help to create and forge this identity. Whether it’s the idea of modernity that comes from abroad or an idea that looks interesting on paper, design should not be all about that. Although design should be without parameters, it should also help to enhance people’s living experience. Hence, the superstitions and cultural backgrounds should definitely be incorporated and well-respected.

SB: It’s the people, definitely. How a DH: Which is your favourite project? city is formed - through a movement or a meeting of like-minded individuals.

And why?

thought of, and cooked a little longer. But designing a restaurant needs to be fast-paced, meeting the requirements of an ever-changing and forward looking environment. Every design needs to last through time. Learning to live the pace definitely helps.

Hai Tien Lo

DH: What advice would you give to aspiring designers?

SB: Experience is great. Never ask

someone where to eat or where to go on a holiday. Make up your own mind and live your life, not the life of another individual. These are stories which would help in the course of your design. Embrace is the keyword. You need to embrace life and the adventures it brings.

DH: What do you engage in during

your free time? Does any of it relate to your occupation?

SB: I actually play sports such as

tennis to forget about work. But I’m personally a fanatic for restaurants that serve good food with appealing decors. This is probably why I explore different restaurants all the time and I guess that helps a lot with my job. 69

Supply & Demand The hottest thing happening in town – café hunting! With surprisingly more than usual cafes that have popped up within the last 6 months, the café scene has probably taken over the ‘hipster’ role in our local market. With discerning café owners on the rise, they are more aware of the concept and design they wish to opt for. But there comes the inevitable costs as well. In fact, majority of funds which are garnered for the opening of such cafes bend towards the furnishing side. But is that well calculated for? We’re pretty sure it’s a yes. Well, we’ve decided to hopped onto the bandwagon of cafe-hunting too and here are some of our preliminary findings.

“cafes are the quickest growing segment within the “fast-food” sector.”

70

The demand for pop-up cafes, concept cafes and well-furnished cafes has been on a steady increase. An article within the Business Week has mentioned: cafes are the quickest growing segment within the “fast-food” sector. Not only is good food a Singaporean’s favourite, we believe a good ambience also ranks one of your top priorities in searching for a hangout location. Not sure if you’ve heard about them but our highlight of the year has got to be… drum rolls - Supply and Demand.

71

Ong & Ong As Singapore turns 50 this year, an architecture firm with more than 40 years of experience sure speaks some volume. ONG&ONG, with a strong track record in integrating skilled architecture, clever interior design, creative environmental branding and sensitive landscape design is probably one of the pioneers in Singapore as a local company pushing towards design and architecture. As such, Design Hub hopes to get a sneak peek into what goes on within the company that has contributed to its success. Check out our interview session with one of its leading senior designer, Panintra Panasampon.

In 2 of Singapore’s prime locations - Esplanade and Orchard Central, it is definitely a good dinner venue for many of us. The truth be told, Supply and Demand has grown famous thanks to the Italian gastronomy that many of us love to indulge in. For those with a smaller appetite, you get to choose the “Tasting” portion that comes in a smaller serving. Further pumping this up, the alfresco dining style at the Esplanade outlet definitely surprises you, pleasantly. With outdoor swings which you can sit on for a playful dining experience, or a relaxed dining atmosphere indoor accompanied with dimmed lights, it is your pick. Not to miss out on what attracts the diners there, the decor. Self-designed by the owners of the restaurant, the decor of this place follows a rustic theme. Going into the details: Check out the indoor dining area. The space is at once interesting, rustic and cosy looking. The irregular stripes of wood that are stacked on the wall 72

at random creates an interesting dimensional effect. Who said that wood planks have to be of a similar colour? Supply and Demand has chosen to break out of that conventional mindset. This move has helped to add depth to the entire space. Talk about matching tables with a wood-made top. They have it too.

DH: What do you think is one rising challenge you have in Singapore today while designing a space? PP: Dense urbanism. Space is limited in Singapore so on many occasions, it is better to prepare a proposal for the client first. Consider the business strategy, the investment, the requirements first instead of purely listening to what the client wants. The need to convince your client and have them understand the limitations are important as well.

The raw finishing of the ceiling ties in with the whole rustic theme. Those copper pipes that connect the airconditioning, including those that extend to the lightings, simply complete the look. The red brick wall that serves as a backdrop at the bar counter is hard to miss as well. Such an amazing combination!

DH: What are some of the key considerations when designing a place? PP: After 8 years in this industry, I understood that it is important to make any design practical. You need to consider the possibilities of making the design functional and suitable to cater to the users. Of course, everything within a space is related. Not just the aesthetics, but the environment, the sound, the smell, everything. The space is only a beauty if it captures all of this.

Out to the walls at the outdoor seating segment. Keep it subtle, keep it simple. The stucco effect creates the right mood for sitting outdoors. Zen, is the word.

DH: What is one thing you’ve learnt in the course as a designer? PP: Creativity is important, yes. But your management skills are just as important.

A great deal of attention has been paid to all the details in Supply and Demand. This, we have to admit. It is a restaurant indeed, worth your trip.

DH: Where do you get your inspiration from? PP: Everywhere! I surf the net pretty regularly to be aware of what designs are in the market, to understand what

Studio M by Ong & Ong

clients are looking for, and of course to get new ideas. But sometimes, you encounter an inspiring idea in the least expected places. For example, new ideas may pop into my head when I go cycling, or when I walk on the streets. Anything is possible. Live your life. Ideas will come. DH: What is one of your favourite projects which you’ve played a part in? And why? PP: Wow! I’ve quite a few personal favourite. If I have to name a few, Kuala Lumpur Golf Country Club (KLGCC) is one which I am really excited about. The show gallery is scheduled to complete by February’15 before we go on to the other areas of the club. The Park Hotel in Medan, Indonesia is another ongoing project which would probably enjoy quite a bit of hype. This is part of the Park Hotel group who has garnered quite a bit of attention with

all their recent developments. So, let’s wait in eagerness together. One of my past project which I really fell in love with is the Westin Ubud hotel in Bali. The serenity in its environment and the decor has a perfect blend that creates magic in relaxing your body and mind.

Capitaland Aparici Tiles : Sonar

Design Hub is proud to bring to you a list of project references which we have captured over the year. Of course, we are tight-lipped about ongoing projects which you can subscribe to our newsletter to find out more. Despite being a newbie in the market, we have earned the trust of architects, designers, developers and homeowners. These projects which consist of residential units, commercial and hospitality projects are a great encouragement to the team at Design Hub. It was a lovely experience working with all of you and we look forward to more projects in the coming year. If you require a project reference for a product which you may be interested in, please let us know.

74

Famous for their shopping malls and residences, Capitaland Limited isn’t a foreign name to all. In the recent years, there have been more projects undertaken by Capitaland that express a bold concept and distinct exterior, like Ion Orchard. Capitaland is indeed, constantly challenging conventions and breaking out of it.  Without a doubt, we were excited to play a part in one of their projects. The possibility of exchanging ideas and bringing an idea to fruition sure heightens the entire experience. Moreover, this particular project involves their very own office premise, Capital Tower.  The engineered wood flooring by Listone Giordano from Italy was used both for the flooring and the walls of their office. The wall feature was something different, something new. Varying lengths of planks were used to portray depth within this feature. A pretty bold move. But Capitaland has

beautifully placed the tiles together to create a cozy vibe. Your line of sight is immediately drawn towards the wall the moment you enter.  Proceeding to the floor area, Capitaland chose a range that is immediately calming to those who enter. The light coloured wood is able to magnify the space yet at once, create a cozy and comfortable work environment for all. A minimalist experience that everyone loves.  You can probably get some inspiration from Capitaland with its interesting use of wood. Wall feature or a comfortable flooring, you can have the luxury of getting both to complete the look.  Design Hub was privileged to take part in such an outstanding commercial project. We look forward to many more collaborations with Capitaland.

massive range of colours and finishing that it introduces, you know finding something you like won’t be an issue. Benny chose a patina finishing for his bathroom which in recent months, have surged in its popularity. Patina definitely helps to opt for a stark contrast in your space.

Benny Low It all began at the Design Hub Foodoutlets. Self-designed by our director, Ho Shu Yuan, the Greenhouse Cafe and the Wok which are part of these Foodoutlets, have captured quite a number of positive responses prior to the opening of Design Hub’s showroom.

There were many other areas in his home which were dominated by Apavisa as well. This included the facade on his exterior as well as the flooring for one of his bedrooms. The versatility of Apavisa’s tiles made it possible for usage indoors, outdoors and even wet areas.

This explains it all. One of our regulars at the Foodoutlets, Benny, showed his support by frequenting the showroom as well after it was launched. Who wouldn’t? After all, Shu Yuan, known for his discerning tastes, had started the showroom by curating the right type of architectural products. The word “right” is probably subjective but if you like the decor at the Foodoutlets, then you would probably be delighted at what you can find at Design Hub.

The option for decorative paint was made available too. We have to admit, Benny was a pretty adventurous guy who was open to new ideas. What are decorative paints, you may ask. It is paint that produces a special effect of your desire. Stating an example, you can choose a concrete look, a rustic design, a stucco-like concept, anything basically. It is an alternative to tiles which may require expensive hacking works. You will be surprised at how paints could produce such a texture and look.

Benny renovated his place with quite a number of products at Design Hub. One of the products used was Apavisa, a hit with all designers. With the

Working with Benny was an enjoyable experience. We were able to efficiently integrate new products with the concept he wanted. Residential projects as such give us the freedom to introduce another dialogue to our clients.

Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore, is currently undergoing a three-phase approach of renovation works scheduled to complete in Q1 of 2016.

Carpets by Design Hub

Hotel Mockup Despite being away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the perks of owning a large place in an industrial area are manifold. We were able to display large panels of tiles, a couple of two-metre wall area covered with wallpaper, the introduction of room concepts and many others. It was not the conventional architectural product showroom you would find in Singapore.

Introducing Listone Giordano’s engineered wood flooring, the classica range was used as a cosy flooring to a hotel room. Why not a carpeted flooring? You will understand once you see it. Not only does the colour of the wood complements the entire design, the style of the wood creates comfort and practicality for maintenance. Definitely worth your every penny.

Perhaps this was also the reason that sparked the curiosity of many designers and architects. Since Design Hub’s inception into the local market, we have created quite a name for ourselves.

But one thing to note before you get to your comfortable room, you have to go through the lobby. Carpets by Design Hub would be first seen in this hotel project, at the lift lobby. The plushiness and luxurious look of the carpets instantly evokes a sense of comfort within you. Not sure about you, but the experience of staying in a hotel for us begins right when you step into the front door. Every step counts.

Having mention the luxury of space, we were able to sublet for concept mockup rooms at a much more attractive price. No doubt, commercial clients who were looking for large office spaces approached us too. The combination of benefits you get at Design Hub created the opportunity for us to bid for a project. 80

World Architecture Festival One of the key events of the year within this trade is the World Architecture Festival (WAF). Not only is it the world’s largest festival and awards programme dedicated to sharing and celebrating the latest architectural achievements, it is also an event held in Singapore that attracts trade professionals from all around the world. WAF sets the benchmark for architectural excellence, where talented architects from every country of the world, regardless of their experience and status, gather to celebrate the purity of brilliant building design. In short, WAF is the global event that garners thousands of people every year through a competition held between architects and designers. It is also a celebration and sharing of architectural excellence with others from a similar trade on an internationally recognised platform. In 2014, Design Hub had the privilege of participating in WAF, as well as partnering Figures to host the shortlist party that was held at our very own Design Hub showroom. We wanted to present an innovative idea, while paying close attention to 84

the environment at the same time. Hence, we created an installation that is designed and crafted by our very own team at Design Hub. It is a dome-shaped installation that involved recycling our old business cards. We, then supported the entire structure using copper pipes which were spraypainted black in colour. To complete the look, we used Listone Giordano’s engineered wood flooring to create a herringbone pattern as the base. This was indeed an installation that has garnered us quite a bit of attention. We even had visitors taking a picture with our booth. It was pretty pleasing to see we must say. For the shortlist party that took place on the second night of WAF, it was truly overwhelming to be able to interact with all the award-winners for WAF. The positive feedback which we received about the showroom was an added bonus to all of us.

We have taken the liberty to explore and provide product ranges which were not available in the local market previously. This includes interesting designed tiles, quality engineered wood flooring that breaks out of conventional rectangular shapes, and even a competitively priced imported modular kitchen system. Whether it is the price, quality, or design, we wanted to inspire your senses. We wanted to show you these architectural products in a brand new light. We want to present to the experiential showroom. You may be wondering, what exactly is an experiential showroom? It is a unique and creative venture between art and design. One that allows you to experience both elements in a space tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Are you wondering about the kind of products we carry at Design Hub? Or perhaps you’re wondering how different can we be from the rest?

the heart of Singapore. There is no where else better to give you a taste of the experiential showroom, than the newly revamped Metro at Centrepoint. An abundance of attention has been given to Metro with its new dynamic concept. We at Design Hub, are excited that we can be part of this new dynamic experience they aim to provide. We have chosen to present Veneta Cucine, an imported modular kitchen system from Italy. Expect to see a satin glass finishing that suggests an elegant tone, highlighted by its matte surface. Your kitchen from Veneta Cucine is itself a reflection of Singapore’s lavish modernity. We hope to bring a smile to your face with the competitive prices we can offer while enjoying what doesn’t diminish - the perks of its quality, functionality and wide variety of colours and finishing. Head over to Design Hub and indulge in a feast for your eyes over 13 different kitchen sets on display. We are certain that this trip would be worth the while.
