Kingsquad Notes – Term 1 2014 – Things that make you go WOW! Dear Kingsquad leaders, At the start of this new school year, we would like to say that you all make us go WOW!, as we know the commitment you have to share both the Gospel and yourselves with the children in Kingsquads week by week. This term we will be thinking about those stories in the Bible that make us go WOW! Sometimes, because we have heard them so often and they are so familiar, we can miss the sense of wonder when they were heard for the first time. So let yourself go WOW! with the children this term. Things That Make You Go WOW! Week 1: Creaon - God’s Power For your info: Please read Genesis 1:1 to 2:4 to start your planning. Someone said that if the Earth is the only planet with life on it, what is the point of the rest of the universe. But if the rest of the universe is there to show the magnificence and awesomeness of God, it is only just big enough. We worship an amazing God. Theme: Creaon shows God’s power.

Acvies: Animals: Write the name of animals on pieces of paper (dog, duck, cow, camel, etc.), each animal twice on two separate slips of paper. Then give a piece to each person. They then have to find the other person in the group who has the same animal as theirs, but this must be done in complete silence. They can only mime their animal. Piconary: In teams, one person comes to the leader and gets the name of the different things that God created: birds / fish / trees / plants / animals / stars / sun / humans. They draw them for the group and when guessed another person comes to get the next word. Seven Days: Label seven areas of the room as follows: 1) day & night; 2) sky; 3) plants, land & sea; 4) sun, moon & stars; 5) fish & birds; 6) animals & humans; 7) God rested. This can then be played in two ways: A) The children have to run to an area, then pull one of the areas out of a bag and all those in that area are out; B) Call out an area and the children have to run to that area; the last one there is out.

Exploring the story: Create: Give each child a small piece of playdough or plas2cine and ask them to create something in a few minutes. Then look at what they have made. Find out if they were pleased with the results. Did they have to start again and would they be happy to show what they had made to other people? Explain that today we will be thinking about how God created the world.

Worship: Verse from the Bible: “God looked at everything he had made, and he was very pleased.” Genesis 1v31a Copy the picture (in resources) onto different coloured card for each team. Cut into 10 pieces, hide them around the room. Each team has to find their 10 pieces and recreate the picture. Song: “God’s love is big” - Great Big God 3 CD- Vineyard Kids

Story : Read the crea2on story from the Bible, Genesis 1:1 to 2:4, or from The Jesus Storybook Bible ‘The beginning: a perfect home.’ Reflecon: Every person in the world has a unique fingerprint. God has made us all totally individual and different to each other - amazing if we think how may people have existed on the earth over 2me. Reflect on God’s power and ability to give us this individuality. This shows us that he is a powerful but loving God who sees each one of us as special. Acvity: Create a fingerprint picture either individually or as a group.

Prayer: Give out the playdough again and let the children roll it into a ball to represent the world. Ask a few to say ‘Thank you’ prayers for some of the amazing things God has created. Then tell them to make a person, represen2ng themselves. Get a few to say prayers for the group. As they are making these, you could play “What a wonderful world” (Big Ministries - ‘Welcome to the Big Academy’ CD) or “What a wonderful world” by Louis Armstrong. Also, if you can show video, on YouTube there is a version of the Lord’s Prayer in Swahili (Baba Yetu) that is set to stunning pictures of the world. Words for all these are in resources.

Applicaon: It says in the Bible about Jesus (John 1:3 GNB) that … “Through him God made all things; not one thing in all crea2on was made without him.” All things include the stars, the Sun, the Earth, this country, your town, your family, you, your fingerprint. It also says (Luke 12:7) that God knows how many hairs there are on your head as well as the number and name of all the stars (Psalm 147:4). God is interested in and able to look aHer the whole world and you as well. Even when things may seem to be going wrong, we know that we can trust God...because He made us!

Things That Make You Go WOW!

Week 2: Abram—God’s Promises For your info: Please read Genesis 15 to start your planning. Abram was told something he thought was never going to happen. But God answered his prayers and kept to his promise. Many children like to know that they can trust someone, encourage them to know that God is someone who we can trust. Use this weeks story to help highlight the importance of trusng in God. Theme - God keeps his promises

Acvies:

Verse to Learn: ‘Because of his glory,...he has given us...precious promises.’ 2 Peter 1 v 4. (NLT) Break the verse up and write them on big stars. Have the children holding the stars and be directed by other children into the correct order. Create: Van Gogh created his own ‘Starry night’ painng. Have a picture available of the painng for the children to see. Get the children to design their own ‘Starry night’ with paints, pastels, crayons or pencils. Constellaons: Give each child a ‘Design your own star Constellaon’ sheet (see resources) and get them to design their own using as many dots as they like. Star corners: Game of four corners just each corner is related to a star theme. Name them Black Dwarf, Red Giant, Nebula, Supernova. Get the children to run around and choose a corner. When they are in their corners, draw a token out of a pot that says one of the four corners. If the children are in that corner they are out; keep going unl you have a winner.

Exploring the Story:

Genesis 15

Amazing Stars: Print out pictures of space, galaxies and stars. Discuss with the children about how amazing they are and create an atmosphere of awe and wonder before leading into the story. Story: Read from The Good News Bible, put emphasis on the stars in verse 5. Verse 18 is where God makes his promise to Abram. Have a map available (see resources) for the children to see how far Abram’s descendants will expand across the lands.

Worship:

Song: ‘God can do anything’ Doug Horley. Chuffed CD

A fast paced song, really encourage the children to do the acons and see who can be the quickest. I wonder: Ask the children to lie down and read them Psalm 147 1-7.GNB. Then re-read verse 4 ‘He has decided the number of the stars and calls each one by name.’ Ask the children what they think God is telling them through verse 4. Reflect: Play a piece of quiet music and ask the children about any promises they have made. Can they remember any? Write them down and ask them to make a new promise. Discuss what type of promises they made and did they keep them.

Applicaon: How important are the promises we make? How important are the promises that God makes? God’s promises are throughout the Bible and he always fulfils his promises, he never lets anybody down. He promised Abram a huge family throughout generaons, as many as the stars are in the sky. Abram couldn't believe what God was telling him but he trusted in God’s promise. And that promise was fulfilled. Can the children think of any other promises God made in the Bible? We must remember how important a promise is to whomever we make it; a friend, family member, a teacher. So we must keep that promise. The biggest promise we can make is before God. Don’t forget if you believe that God has made you a promise-he will never let you down.

Ursa Major

The Great Bear

The sky is made up of lots of different stars where people have formed animals or pictures from them. Here is a constellaon of The Great Bear from the sky. Use the dots below to create your own star constellaon, it can be anything you like.

Week 2

Sea of Galilee

Things That Make You Go WOW!

Week 3: Moses—God’s always there For your info: Please read Exodus 14 to start your planning. Moses was an ordinary man from Egypt. He didn’t see anything that made him special. But God did. God chose Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and he never failed to leave Moses’ side. God was always there for Moses in every situa$on, encourage the children at Kingsquad to know that they are never alone. Theme - God will always be there for you! Acvies:

Verse to Learn: ‘And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.’ Mahew 28 v 20. Get the children into pairs and ask them to come up with ac$ons for the verse to show the rest of the group. Obstacle race: Split your group into two teams and place random safe objects in the way for the children to weave around as they race from one end of the room to another. Use objects like cones, hoops, bean bags, etc. First team back wins. Crossing the Red Sea: Label one end of the room ‘Egypt’ and one end of the room ‘Desert’. The children are the Egyp$ans and one child, as Moses, stands halfway between Egypt and the Desert in the sea. The other children have to say ‘Moses, can we cross the red sea?’ and ‘Moses’ replies ‘Only if you are…’ and the child will say something like wearing white socks, name begins with A, are a girl etc. Children who have what is called can run across the sea and Moses must catch them before they reach the Desert. The winner is the last child or children to be able to get across without ge1ng caught. Cra: God gave Moses a special rod to help him lead the way. Roll up newspaper or paper and get the children to decorate their own special rod. Exploring the Story:

Possible or Impossible? Ask the children ques$ons and they have to run to either side of the room and guess whether what you are saying is possible or impossible. Ques$ons in the resources. Story: The Par$ng of the Red Sea story of Moses, Exodus 14, is rather well known. Read straight from any children’s bible storytelling book as it will describe the par$ng of the sea at its best. The Jesus Storybook Bible has a good version; read from ‘God makes a way.’ Act it out: This story is always fun to act out so get costumes ready for the children and allow them to act out the par$ng of the Red Sea.

Worship:

Song: ‘Great Great Brill Brill’ Doug Horley This is a great song to get the children dancing to! Pray and listen: Give each child a copy of the lyrics of ‘Nothing is Impossible’ by Planetshakers. See resources. If you have the track, play it to them as they read along or sing along with it. Use this as their prayer $me and get them to focus on the fact that God is always with them whatever it is that is happening. Paper fish prayers: Before Kingsquad draw the sea level onto a big piece of paper or card and have paper fish (see resources) available for each child to write prayers onto and to decorate. Then ask them to s$ck their prayers into the sea as they say Amen.

Applicaon: Ask the children what made them think ‘wow’ in this story? Was it that Moses was able to split the sea into two? Some$mes we find that life throws hard obstacles at us and we can’t work out a way to get through. We try and try again but it just doesn't seem that we are ge1ng anywhere. Moses had all the Israelites moaning at him. They were angry that Moses had led them to a dead end…but God showed Moses the way and was there just when Moses needed him most. When things get in our way and stop us from moving on, ask God to help you to guide you along the way. He will always be there for you! No maer how impossible it may seem to you, God will never let you down.

Week 3

Things That Make You Go WOW!

Week 4: Water into Wine - God’s Miracles For your info: Please read John 2 verses 1-11 to start your planning. Jesus’ first miracle wasn’t done because of a maer of life or death. Jesus simply felt compassion for a family who would have felt disgraced if the wine had run out at the wedding. Jesus is there for us, in the small things and the big and He wants to bless us with God’s power. Theme - God can do amazing things!

Acvies: Get dressed! Have a relay race where each child runs to a sack and pulls out one item of clothing which they can wear to the wedding! Include fun items like giant sunglasses and maybe a dog-collar for the “vicar”! If permied, take a photo! Feed me! Children sit in a circle. A#er using hand gel, give each a biscuit (check for allergies first!) but tell them not to eat it. Instead, they are to feed the person on their le#. Wow! Children dance round the room and when the music stops they strike a pose and say “Wow!” See how long they can stay in that posi)on without moving or laughing. Piconary: In teams the children are given words which one child from each team must draw (in silence!) and the others must guess what the item is. Suggested words: bride; water; servant; wine; glass

Exploring the Story:

Worship:

Miracles:

Learn a verse from the Bible:

Do the children know of any miracles that Jesus did? You may need to prompt, reminding them of Jesus healing a blind man, feeding the 5000 etc. In groups, ask them to act out one of the miracles so the others can guess what happened. Explain that we are to witness today a re-enactment of what really happened!

“What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

Story:

Prayer: Have a short game of pass the parcel with a short prayer printed in each layer (as well as a sweet if you like!) which a child can read out and the others repeat. The winner can share the sweets at the end, celebra)ng God’s amazing love for us.

See resources for sketch. You will need to use your wedding clothes again!

Luke 18 verse 27 Divide the Kingsquad into teams. Cut the memory verse up into pieces and have a relay race to collect the pieces in a plas)c jug which the children have to hold on their shoulders. (See resources)

Reflecon: Using a graffi) wall, let the children draw or paint as they listen to “Water you turned into wine” by Chris Tomlin. Ask what miracles they would like to see in their lives or in the world.

Applicaon: A#er giving a personal tes)mony of a miracle in your life, ask the children if anything amazing has happened in their lives. Jesus is capable of doing so much for us, if we ask him. He’s not just concerned with wars and famine, Jesus cares about everything that affects us and really wants to be part of our worries and celebra)ons. With God’s power, Jesus can do anything! Cra3: Make origami flowers and as the children lay them in a dish of water, they will see them open slowly. Do they believe that God can perform miracles? As they watch, they can ask God for more faith in His power (see resources).

Week 4

The Wedding at Cana (One person reads the story as another does the following acons. Try using food colouring hidden in the boom of a glass which will turn the water red as the water is poured inside) This is the story of Jesus’ first miracle; the first )me he used God’s power to help someone else. Jesus, his mother Mary and his disciples were invited to a wedding (wear veil) in Cana. In the middle of the party (blow party blower) the wine ran out so there was nothing to drink but water (pour into cup). Jesus knew how upset (wipe eyes with hankie) the bride (wear veil) and groom (wear hat) would be. With nothing to serve to all their guests, the wedding would be ruined and the family would be shamed. So Jesus called for the servants (tea-towel draped over arm). He told them to take six stone water pots and to fill them to the top with water. He then told one servant to pour some of the water into a wine glass and take it to one of the important guests. When the servant poured the water into the glass (pour liquid) he was amazed to find that it wasn’t water any more but red wine (hold up glass). And it wasn’t just any wine it was the best wine any of the guests had ever tasted. They were all very pleased and the bride (wear veil) and groom (wear hat) were happy that their celebra)ons had not been spoilt (blow party blower).

Week 4

Things That Make You Go WOW!

Week 5: Jesus heals a paralysed man - God’s Healing For your info: Please read Mark 2 verses 1-12 to start your planning. Was it the faith of the paralysed man’s friends, Jesus forgiving the man’s sins or simply a miracle that Jesus chose to perform for God’s glory? Let the children decide! Theme - God is able to heal in miraculous ways - but a miracle is out of the ordinary! Acvies:

Are you sleeping? A child lies down in the middle of the floor, under a blanket. The others get closer and closer whilst whispering “Are you sleeping? You can’t catch me!” The child under the blanket can leap up at any "me and catch one of the crowd who will then take their place under the blanket. Musical Bumps! Children dance to music. When it stops, they must quickly sit down on the floor. The slowest can be out or just miss one turn. Run for it! The leader has a list of items which they will request one by one, eg. a pencil, a black shoe, a cardigan. In teams, the children try to be first to run up to the leader with the required item. The first child to get to the leader with the correct item gets a point for their team. Cra: Make a get well soon card (see resources for idea). Using glued, scrunched-up pieces of "ssue paper, complete the rainbow; sign the card and give it to someone you know who is poorly.

Exploring the Story:

Shoebox Theatre: Recreate the shoe box theatre based on the story (see resources). Story: See resources or read story from a children’s Bible. Mark 2:1-12 Hotseang: Ask a child to pretend to be Jesus. Ques"ons you could ask are: Why did you decide to heal the paralysed man? What did you think when he was lowered through the roof, in front of you? Ask child to pretend to be the paralysed man: How did you feel when your friends lowered you through the roof? What did you think Jesus would say to you? Encourage the children to ask their own ques"ons.

Worship:

Learn a verse from the Bible: “The Lord will restore them to health, and the sins they have commied will be forgiven.” James 5 verse 15b. As the children repeat the verse, get them to say it whilst jumping round the room, then hopping then skipping, then running. Song: “I’m gonna jump up and down” Lovely Jubbly CD Prayer: Children sit in a circle. They can each share one good thing and one not-so-good thing that has happened in the last week and are encouraged to pray about these situa"ons. Help them to understand that Jesus can make people physically and spiritually be;er. Wonder me: Ask the children to lie on the floor and close their eyes. If possible, play “Kiss it be;er” from Great Big God 3 CD. Ask them to think about the following: I wonder if you believe Jesus can make a paralysed man walk; I wonder which person in the story is most like you; I wonder if you need Jesus’ healing in your life.

Applicaon: When Jesus was on the earth, people o?en thought that if others were sick it was because they had done something wrong. Jesus said to the paralysed man, “Your sins are forgiven.” and “Pick up your mat and go home!” Do the children think God, who made us and loves us, would want to see us ill? Do they believe He can make people be;er? Try to give a tes"mony of how you have seen God working in someone’s life, but be careful not to give the impression that every "me we pray, God will heal that person. Explain that some"mes we see people get be;er when we’ve prayed for them and we need to believe in God’s power. However, some"mes it is not in God’s plan to restore someone to full health but we have to trust that He knows best.

Week 5 Sketch “Jesus heals a paralysed man” Either two leaders and a child or 3 children

Josh: We’re never going to get John through this crowd and we need him to meet Jesus so he can be healed! Mark: Don’t worry, Josh, I’ve got a brilliant plan! Josh: What’s that then? Mark: We’re going to carry John’s mat to the house where Jesus is teaching. Josh: And …….. Mark: And lower him through the roof! Josh: You must be joking! Mark: No, we can do it. We’ll make a hole in the roof and gently lower John’s mat down in front of Jesus! Josh: I’m not sure about this. Won’t we get in awful trouble? And what if John falls off his mat? Mark: Stop your worrying! Come on! Oh no, it’s even busier than I thought – there are people everywhere! Let’s go up the stairs, on to the roof and start digging. Josh: I can hear Jesus talking. The hole’s nearly big enough! John: I’m geGng scared! Mark: Don’t worry! Jesus will look a?er you. Jesus: Hallo, young man, where did you come from? Your friends have a lot of faith in me. My son, your sins are forgiven! Pick up your mat and go home. Mark: Hey look, John’s managed to stand up! Josh: But he’s paralysed! Mark: He’s not paralysed now, Jesus has healed him. Now he’s rushing out of the door. This is incredible! Josh: What a miracle! Jesus’ power is amazing!

With best wishes from

Week 5

The people to be coloured in by the children: fold blue tabs underneath them

Put slit in top to lower stretcher through

The background of the box to go on the inside walls of the box Jesus to be tabbed on to the box next to where the paralysed man will be lowered into the box.

Either give the children a challenge to make their own box and give a prize for the best Or ask the children to colour in the people and use it as a mini theatre for when you tell the story. Photocopy people onto card so they will stand up when tabs are folded under them This is the man that is to be lowered through the roof of the box

Things That Make You Go WOW! Week 6: The Transfiguraon - God’s Son Jesus For your info: Please read Luke 9 :28-36 to start your planning. Society today is fixated on celebrity, even though, underneath all the hype, celebri(es are no different to us. But Jesus was different. Although fully human, he was also fully God and Peter was to see this in an amazing way in today’s story. Theme: God’s son Jesus.

Acvies: Amazing/Ordinary: 1 Make a list of some things that could be amazing or ordinary, e.g. pung a man on the moon; the birth of a baby; a thunderstorm; chocolate; football. Label opposite ends of the room ‘Ordinary’ and ‘Amazing’. 2 Read out each item – the children run to which they think best describes it – ask some why they chose. 3 Finish by calling out ‘Jesus’ and let the children do the same. Get them to say examples of some amazing things Jesus did. Wink murder: 1 Get everyone to sit in a circle with their eyes closed. Walk all the way round the circle and tap one person on the back – this person is the murderer. 2 Get everyone to open their eyes. Explain that the murderer must wink at their vic(ms. Anyone who gets winked at must ‘die’ with appropriate sound effects. Everyone else has to try to guess who the murderer is. If someone guesses incorrectly they also have to ‘die’. If they get it right, choose another murderer and play another round. 3 Say that you have all been trying to solve the mystery of who the murderer is. But some mysteries can’t be explained or solved – we have to live with them and remain in awe of them. One of those mysteries is how Jesus can be both fully God and fully human. Follow A Leader: 1 Get everyone to stand in a circle, facing inwards with their eyes closed. Walk all the way round the circle and tap one person on the shoulder.
