King William County Community Connections

A listing of Family and Community Resources in and for King William Citizens Compiled and Produced by the King William Citizens’ Action Team A collaboration of the Advisory Team of Quin Rivers, Inc. and the Leadership Team of Virginia Cooperative Extension

King William County was established by the enabling act of Virginia General Assembly effective on April 11, 1702 and created from the Pamunkey Neck section of King & Queen County (Town of West Point incorporated on July 11, 1870). The County is named after William III; King of England, Scotland and Ireland from April 11, 1689 to March 19, 1702. In 1658, the Virginia General Assembly enacted the legislation creating the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Indian Reservations which are now part of King William County. They are the only reservations in Virginia and two of the oldest I n the United States. The historic King William County Courthouse was built about 1725. It is not only the county's oldest public building, but is purportedly the oldest public building in use in Virginia and the oldest courthouse of English foundation in continuous use in the United States. The building is considered one of the finest examples of early Colonial brickwork and courthouse design. A new courthouse was completed in 2004; however, the old courtroom is still used on occasion to allow it to keep its historical designation as the oldest courthouse in continuous use in the United States. Join the TEAM to help build the bridge between community needs and business, education, and government services. The King William Citizens Action Team (KW CAT) Needs YOU!!! After a series of community forums and multiple surveys sponsored by the King William Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension and Quin Rivers, Inc., the following major local issues, needs and concerns were identified: • Development/growth and planning • Community Services • Environment • Education • Family Services The KW CAT gives input and direction to local programs provided by these two sponsoring agencies functioning as the local Extension Leadership Council and Quin Rivers Advisory Council.

The booklet you are holding is an outgrowth of one of the identified issues—residents not knowing where to find needed information and services. This is the first in a number of targeted projects that focuses on helping improve programs and services to King William’s total population. Other initiatives include working with the school system to connect students to cooperative work experiences, put in place financial and economic educational programs geared to preparing our youth for economic success in the world of work, and working with local government to involve citizens in the development of the new Comprehensive Plan.

HELP US HELP YOU—JOIN THE TEAM!! We meet at the Pamunkey Baptist Association Center (across from Hamilton Holmes School on Rt. 30) at 6:30 p.m. on the 24 4th Tuesday of each month.

Thanks to King William’s ONLY “home grown” Realty for funding the printing of this community resource.
