S E R V ICES AND MUSIC LENT TERM HOLY WEEK AND EASTER 2016

NOTICES PR E A C H E R S T H I S TE R M This term we begin a special series of sermons entitled ‘Women of Spirit’. Preachers will take the opportunity to introduce one of the great women of faith and spirituality and suggest how they might inspire us today. Two of our subjects are Old Testament characters (Deborah and Naomi), one is an Anglo-Saxon Abbess (Hilda), another is a late-Victorian author, religious philosopher and Egyptologist (Margaret Benson) and the final one we consider this term is a philosopher, spiritual writer and political activist of the first half of the twentieth century (Simone Weil). The full sequence of preachers this term is as follows: 17 January

Dr Hanna Weibye Junior Research Fellow, King’s College 24 January The Revd Canon Dr Jessica Martin Priest-incharge of Duxford, Hinxton and Ickleton with Whittlesford and Pampisford and the Bishop of Ely’s Adviser in Women’s Ministry Women of Spirit – Margaret Benson 31 January 7 February

CO L L E C T I O N S A T SE R V I C E S Each Sunday morning we make a collection to support one of the charities which have been suggested by members of the College community. This term they are ‘STARS’, which provides bereavement counselling to children in Cambridge, and the Sant’ Egidio Community, which cares for the poor and marginalised both in their home state, Italy (not least the great influx of refugees from across the Mediterranean), and elsewhere in the world in some dangerous and desperately impoverished places. Last term’s collections raised £848 for each of the two charities supported. At all other services and at Saturday evening recitals, you are invited to support the work of the Chapel and Choir by giving to the retiring collection. Please use the envelope provided, including your details if you are a UK taxpayer, so that we can benefit from Gift Aid: this way the government adds 25% to your donation. If you would prefer to make a donation at a later date, please either send a cheque to the Dean, the Revd Dr Stephen Cherry, King’s College, Cambridge, CB2 1ST; or email [email protected] for information on ways to make significant or ongoing contributions to our work. JE S U S WE P T On Monday 22 February at 5.30 p.m. there will be a special sequence of words and music that explores the spiritual significance of tears and weeping. King’s Voices will offer appropriate music and we will have readings from writers such as Marjorie Kempe and John Donne as well as from the Bible. Dr Thomas Dixon, a Non-Resident Member of King’s and currently of Queen Mary University of London where he is Director of the Queen Mary Centre for the History of Emotions, will give an address based on some ideas presented in his recent book ‘Weeping Britannia: Portrait of a Nation in Tears’ (OUP 2015). SE A T I N G I N CH A P E L The top stalls in the choir area are reserved for members of King’s College and their guests. Members of the University are invited to make themselves known to the Chapel staff and may be invited to sit in the sub-stalls.

RE S T O R A T I O N O F T H E CH A P E L O R G A N The King’s College Chapel organ is undergoing the most significant restoration since the 1960s. Today’s instrument remains fundamentally as it was designed to be at the time of its rebuilding in the mid-1930s, but after many years of frequent use it is becoming unreliable; major work is now being undertaken to ensure that it continues to function optimally for the next generation. The restoration will be carried out during the first nine months of 2016, and will involve the removal of almost all the pipework for cleaning and repair. Work on the empty case in the Chapel will take place, including cleaning, surveying and restoration. Choral services in the Chapel will continue, and the organ is expected to be ready for use again in September. For more information about the organ and the restoration, please visit our website at www.kings.cam.ac.uk. MU S I C The Chapel organ makes its final contribution to this term’s Chapel Services on Sunday 17 January. In its place will be the Klop chamber organ, a grand piano and a small pipe organ generously loaned to the College by Richard Wood. There will be a preponderance of early music and a cappella repertoire, but some works will be performed with piano accompaniment instead of organ. The Saturday evening organ recitals will be replaced by a series of small-scale concerts by a variety of performers which has been devised by Tom Etheridge and Richard Gowers, Organ Scholars. Another of the commissions in memory of the late Michael Boswell (KC 1959) will receive its first performance – Judith Bingham’s setting of Psalm 121. An instrumental ensemble will accompany the Choir at the Sung Eucharist on Sunday 31 January, Sunday 7 February, and Easter Day, 27 March. This year sees the 12th Easter at King’s Festival. Details are given in this booklet and on the College website. The liturgical celebrations of Holy Week and Easter are complemented by a series of concerts featuring seasonal music together with talks and other events.

DA I L Y SA I D SE R V I C E S In addition to our choral services, more intimate acts of worship are offered each weekday in one of the side chapels. Normally, the Eucharist is celebrated at 12.30 p.m. If there is a Sung Eucharist in the evening, the 12.30 p.m. service that day will be the Office of Readings, at which we hear and reflect on passages both from the Bible and from the great spiritual writers. There will be signage in Chapel each day specifying where these services are being held. RE C O R D I N G Please note that the use of cameras, recording equipment, video cameras and mobile phones is not permitted in Chapel. Some services and recitals are recorded each week for webcasts. You can listen to these throughout the year on the King’s College website. SE R V I C E LI S T Copies of this booklet are available for sale at the King’s Visitor Centre, please leave this one for others to use. Braille and large print service booklets are available from the Dean’s Verger for Evensong and Sung Eucharist services. CH O R A L SE R V I C E S Services are normally sung by King’s College Choir on Sundays and from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Services on Mondays are sung by King’s Voices, the College’s mixed voice choir. Exceptions are listed. K I N G ’ S C O L L E G E C H O I R CD S Choir recordings are available from the King’s College website and from the King’s College Visitor Centre during the day. By purchasing the Choir’s CDs from King’s College, you are directly supporting the activities of the Chapel and Choir. CH O R I S T E R S A T KI N G’S If you have a son in Years 2, 3 or 4 at school who likes singing and is enthusiastic about music, we encourage you to get in touch with Caroline in the Choir Office, who can tell you about the benefits that come with being a chorister, and answer your questions about life in King’s College Choir and at King’s College School. Please email her at [email protected] or telephone 01223 331224. The next formal auditions for choristerships are on Saturday 23 January 2016, but enquiries are welcome all the year round.
