Core Curricula 9

English Language Arts Scarborough Public Schools recently adopted Units of Study and Words Their Way for writing and foundational work. Units of Study is based on Lucy Calkins work at Columbia Teachers College and is research-based and widely respected. Guided reading is used in every classroom for reading instruction. Children are matched with those working on similar skills in small groups.

Core Curricula 10

Math Scarborough Public Schools adopted Math In Focus five years ago for K-5 math instruction. This curriculum is based on Singapore Math. It has three main components; Concrete, Pictorial , and Abstract. Our goal is to teach children numbers, number sense, and creative problem solving. Rote memory of facts is only one small component of the curriculum.

 Summer program for incoming Kindergarten

students who could benefit from a “boost” with their letters and sounds. Invitations are based on spring screening results. Highly structured, engaging, and fun. Total immersion in letters and sounds! Runs Monday through Thursday from 8:00-12:00 for 24 days. (June 29-August 6) Snack and transportation are provided. No fee 3/3/2015

 Kindergarten Kamp is a new program that has 

evolved from Kindergarten Jumpstart. Highly structured, engaging and fun. Activities with letters, sounds, numbers, writing, coloring, cutting, other school-readiness activities. Runs Monday-Thursday for 3 weeks 2 sessions - June 20-July 17 and July 20-August 6 8:00-12:00 Light snack and transportation provided FREE 3/3/2015

Health Screening 14

 Health Screening during Kindergarten registration is

your opportunity to have individual conversations with our Health Services staff. At that time, you should share important medical information about your child including:    

Allergies or food sensitivities Medical conditions requiring monitoring or treatment during the school day Information about medications that might need to be administered at school Ask questions about procedures at school related to your child’s medical concern 3/3/2015

Student Health Record Must Include:  The child’s name and date of birth  A minimum of:   



5 DTP (4 DTP if 4th is given on or after 4th birthday) 4 Polio ( if 4 doses given before 4th birthday, an additional dose of IPV should be given after the 4th birthday) 2 MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) 1 Varicella (chicken pox) or reliable history of disease

Each immunization entry must include the vaccine type, date administered and the name of the provider.

School Exclusion 18

 If there is an outbreak of a disease for which your

child has not been immunized, the Maine Center for Disease Control will require that your child be excluded from school for his/her protection.  The Maine Center for Disease Control determines the number of days that a child must be excluded.

School Health Policies 19

 Medications, prescription or over the counter, may

not be transported by a child in his/her backpack. They must be brought to school by an adult.  All medications given at school require a physician’s order and written parent permission.

Students may be sent home from school due to fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or bathroom accidents that cannot be managed by the child independently. School staff will communicate clear guidelines for returning to school. 3/3/2015

School Bus Scheduling and Routing Policy • All K-5 students who live ¼ mile from the school are eligible for bus transportation • Students may be picked up and/or dropped off at a

day care center if it is on a regularly scheduled bus route. • Students are limited to one day care arrangement.

care) may determine which primary school your child attends.  Bus routes in regards to school assignment are reviewed annually.  Bus transportation is not provided for after school play dates or other activities.

Dropping Off Kindergartners 23

 Bus drivers MUST see a designated adult at the drop

off location before they release a Kindergarten student from the bus.  If no authorized adult is present, the child is

returned to the school and the parent will be contacted to pick them up.

 Registration is important! Tell your friends!  By appointment on March 30, 31, April 1, 2 (snow

date on April 3)  If any screening date is cancelled due to weather, it is

automatically moved to the snow date. Appointment times remain the same.

Class Assignments are completed after all registration paperwork has been completed. You will receive a letter from your building principal indicating:  Your child’s class placement  An appointment for your child on one of the first two days of school (screening days)  Dates and times for principal tours and PTA events 3/3/2015

Building principals make all class placement decisions. Efforts are made to balance classrooms according to gender, academic and social needs, and other relevant factors. Requests for specific teachers are not accepted, but the information you provide helps us in making a positive teacher match for your child.

 The first 2 days of school on the 2015-2016 school

calendar are Screening Days for Kindergarten students and are by appointment only.  These appointments last approximately 45 minutes and are with your child’s teacher.  You will have a chance to meet your child’s teacher and complete more paperwork!
