Kimbe International School The Right School For Your Child From the Principal Dear Parents,

Newsletter Number 2 Term 1 Year 2010

It was very good to see so many of you present on our ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening. I hope you found the evening useful. I know the staff appreciated the opportunity to meet with you and tell you about the proposed activities for this year. It has been very good to note an improvement in the weather this week and it is particularly good to see the students able to use the school field again for sport. It is also good to see the children able to work outside when the opportunity arises. The two pictures show the Grade 4/5 class playing cricket during their Physical Education lesson and the Grade 2/3 class measuring areas of the school using their paces. [Of course half an hour after I wrote the above comment the heavens opened reminding us that the rains have not yet finished!!] Next Friday will see the presentation of our first Parent Assembly of the year. It will be the turn of the Lower Primary section and I hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join us and support the children in their work.

Ifor Jones ~ Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians, The P& F committee members from last year, 2009, would like to ask all parents, guardians and friends to come together to elect new office bearers for this year’s Parents and Friends Association. We would like all parents, guardians, friends and wantoks to come for this meeting on the 24th of February, 2010, at 5pm at the KIS Hall. The P&F is an important organization because it can organize fundraising activities and ‘working bees’ to support the school in buying or making extra resources . It is also hoped that this organization will help to maintain and build on the family atmosphere of the school. Please, parents and friends, do spare us some of your time and come along for the first P&F meeting next week. Thank you for your continuous support and co-operation. On behalf of P&F members, Mrs. Gertrude Loga.

Grade 5 & 6 News A big hello from grade 5 / 6. We are happy to tell you that the term has started very well. Our Theme for this term is “Water”. We are looking at the importance of water in our lives, at the properties of water and how water affects plant life.

Language. We have already read one class reader, a novel called the Water Horse by Dick King Smith. It was a really exciting, moving story. We wrote a letter to Dick King-Smith hoping that he’ll send us a signed autograph. Letters have also been written to our pen friends in the International School in London, U.K. We had excellent vocabulary work developing on from reading the Water Horse book and many inspiring poems.

You are so loud Stop bumping around rocks Washing beach houses Washing my beach clothes Pulling out in dirty waves on the beach I’m tired of the storm But I don’t care about it really, Safe in my house. By Apoloso Lisio.

The river makes me shiver Because of the cold, wet weather. So slowly you flow You never ever know What you might do Or, where you will go. By:Liannah Thompson

Swirling and twirling  I race down the jagged mountains Crashing and bashing Against the smooth stones With the elegance of a dancer I dance swiftly down the Jagged peaks of a mountain And suddenly I tumble into The ocean with a fountain of Water.   By Nathan Tonar.

Grade 5 / 6 are designing and making biscuits in their Design Technology. They’ve been weighing, discussing, planning, drawing, deciding on their own biscuit recipe. Then once made they will design an advertisement for their biscuit. Next week there will be tasty treats coming home, well, if they last the journey!!! Mathematics. In our maths we have been investigating different ways of measuring, height, mass of objects, volume, learning what a millimeter is etc. Grade 5 and 6 are both working on the same topic, but at their different levels. Science. To begin our plant study, we looked at the basic structure of plants. We were lucky to be invited to join the Grade 11 class with Ms Lavai. There we saw plant and animal cells under the microscope. It was interesting to compare their shape. Thank you grade 11s. Society and Environment Using our computers for the Encarta encyclopedia and the library research books we are enjoying investigating the answers to our different water and plant questions. We have been looking at how water in its different forms affects life here on Earth. How much water do you use every day? Join us, have fun finding out.

Welcome to the first publication of the Grade 11SE Newsletter. I wish to welcome you all continuing parents back to 2010 school year. For the new parents who just joined us this year , welcome aboard MV KIS11SE—2010, bound for your child’s future destination. The class has a wonderful team of 19 enthusiastic and energetic students who have now settled into their new learning environment. These students are of diverse family, cultural and religious background and have all come for the purpose of getting an education for a meaningful life. We also welcome Philip T who has returned from a successful Open Heart Operation. We need each other’s company onboard to contribute positively to your child’s successful progress in learning. Please do not hesitate to contact me about any concern that you have with your child. Mrs. S. Emmanuel Grace Efi

Recently, we were required to do a practical experiment using a microscope. First of all we researched the parts of a microscope functions of the parts, steps in preparing a slide (sample) to be observed and safety in using a microscope to familiarize ourselves on how to handle a microscope. The two experiments were: 1.

prepare a slide of human cheek cell

2.

A slide of onion epidermal cells.

We were fascinated with the results from both experiments. We now have a major assignment/project that is to build a 3—dimensional cell of either a plant or an animal cell.

HISTORY Info by: Frances, Doro & Mel

Historical Events

The grade 11’s have started the term by learning the cell structure. The main outcomes were to draw, identify, state, compare and contrast an animal cell and plant cell. We also related the density of certain organelles with the functions of specific cells.

PHYSICS

CHEMISTRY

In Physics we have started off with “Heat and Energy”. Heating is all about the transfer of energy. Energy is measured in Joules. There were two important terms and their formula that came up in our readings. 1/ Specific Heat Capacity (SHC) which tells you how much energy stuff can store.

Chemistry is generally regarded as the scientific study of the materials or substances from which everything is made. It involves a lot of observing, measuring, recording, inferring, predicting, classifying and hypothesis. For the last four weeks, we have been studying Physical and Chemical change. This includes stuff on elements, compounds, ions, mixtures, periodic table and of course atoms…. Test you knowledge with this crossword.

E.g. How much energy is needed to heat 2kg of water from 10˚ C to 100 C ?

Energy = Mass x SHC x temperature Ans: E = 2 x 4200 x 90 * Did you know the SHC = 756 000 j

2.

1.

3.

for water is 4200 j/kg C

4

2/ Specific Latent Heat (SHL) which is the energy needed to change state (liquid, gas, solid)

5

Eg. The specific latent heat of water (for melting ) is 334,000 j/kg.

Energy—Mass x SHL How much energy is needed to melt an ice cube of mass 7 g at 0 C?

6

Ans: Using the formula for SLH try out the example. Your answer should be in joules.

MATHS by : Doro,Frances & Mel For these past few weeks we’ve been studying surds. What are surds? Surds are rational numbers that can’t be expressed as a whole number. They can’t terminate or reoccur eg: √2, √7, etc. 1) √20 → √4 x √5

2). √108 → √36 x √3

= (2) √ (5)

8. Number of hydrogen atoms in a water molecule. DOWN 2. Describe a substance which dissolves. 3 Change from a liquid to a gas .4. Most solvent

Suspension, solution, evaporation, rod, oil, two, important on earth solute, water

= 6√3 ECONOMICS

Coefficient

In Economics we are currently learning about the introduction of economics which are the :

surd GET IT ??

→ NOW TRY THIS

√72

Hint:: if you can’t work it out then…. Use a calculator, duh—h ! ( Answer will be in the next newsletter)

basic economic problem (which is when resources are limited and people’s wants are unlimited

Economic method ( consists of methods that can solve the economic problem)

Opportunity cost, ( It’s when a want or need is satisfied when another want or need is not satisfied

We are also studying about the PPC graph (production possibility curve) which interprets the opportunity cost. Info by: Stanely S

SPORTS :This term we are playing chess. Chess is a board game played by 2 people. It was created during medieval times and played by Kings, Queens, Lords etc.. It Depicts warfare and each piece represents a figure at the society back then . For most students this is new and it’s challenging as it keeps the mind thinking all throughout the game .
