Hello

Gerry McCoy – Deputy Regional Manager, Ayrshire, Dumfries & Galloway Gerry McCoy has joined us with over twenty years’ experience in various roles in the third sector and is enjoying the exciting challenges of the role. Gerry aims to develop our community engagement, local membership, fundraising and the involvement and representation of people with dementia and carers. “I have loved meeting so many

Jewels Lang – Practice Team Leader, Ayrshire Personalised Support Service I took up this post in February but have worked for Alzheimer Scotland for nearly three years. I moved to the UK with my family, in part to look after an elderly relative with dementia, after working in international development for 25 years – generally not in places you would spend a holiday! I found myself with some spare time, and started working part-time for the Perth Service of Alzheimer Scotland. Although splitting my time between homes in Glasgow and Perthshire I am looking forward to learning more about Ayrshire as I meet the families we provide services for. I’m looking forward to developing my new role and the service, with the support of my colleagues and you, so please feel free to contact me if you have any suggestions or ideas. Based at the new resource centre, I work Tuesday to Friday and would encourage everyone to visit.

I can be contacted by telephone on 01563 542621 or by email at [email protected]. The service has been providing a personalised support service since 2011, supporting people with dementia throughout Ayrshire. Anyone can make a referral to the service and the support is paid for either using their own funds or with a budget that has been agreed with them by the local authority – self directed support. This type of support allows the person with dementia and their family to have more choice and control over how they receive the support. If you would like advice on self-directed support or the service, please contact us on 01563 542621 or by email at [email protected]

flexible and personalised solutions to their care needs in the home and community, ensuring that they are involved in the choices made about their care. I can be contacted by telephone on 01563 542621 or by email at [email protected] Jennifer’s Post Diagnostic Link Worker role has also increased to cover four days a week. She works between bases at the North West Kilmarnock Area Centre and our new resource centre. Staff enjoy welcoming visitors, including our carers and the people they support, to the centre. We look forward to the centre being a central hub, providing a variety of opportunities for community groups and activities, information and advice, as well as a drop-in café where carers and friends of people with dementia can get together and chat, helping to reduce the feelings of isolation many people affected by dementia can feel.

Fundraising News & Events DIARY DATE Memory Walk 2014 We are inviting everyone to stride, strut, saunter and stravaig to raise money for people with dementia in Scotland. Memory Walk 2014 is the perfect opportunity to make every step count to show your support for the 88,000 people with dementia, their carers, partners and families or remember a loved one.

Cathy Reeder, Senior Support Worker with the Ayrshire Personalised Support Service, organised a very successful night, held at the Thistle in Hurlford on 28th February 2014. The event was well attended and enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone who attended and donated raffle prizes. A grand total of £503 was raised for the resource centre. It has been a busy period for local fundraising events in East Ayrshire. In May, Jackie Robertson and her Stewarton Committee hosted a fantastic fundraiser music night in the Stewarton Community Centre with the very talented Paul Towning and his barber shop group of singers, plus the beautiful soloists, group and pianist of Mr and Mrs Hawkins. Over three thousand pounds was raised from the evening which was split between Alzheimer Scotland and the Beatson Institute. A Car Boot Sale was held on 1st June, organised by Chris Simms of GFB Buildings Ltd at the Boreland Business Centre, Cumnock. On 2nd June a very topical World Cup Football quiz night was held in The Howard Arms, Kilmarnock, organised by Community Activity Organiser Lawrence Lindsay. On 28th June we held a very successful Champagne, Cocktails and Cupcakes night at the new resource centre, organised by our Link Worker, Jennifer

match lunch at the Park Hotel. Despite the weather, and a St Johnstone victory, everyone had a great day, with all the associated memories.

We would also like to say a very big ‘thank you’ to all our donators – those who give in memory of loved ones, from home money boxes and general interest. No matter how big or small the donation is it all goes towards the work of Alzheimer Scotland in East Ayrshire and the resource centre. Thank you!

Resource Centre News Cinema Club This has now moved from the Belford Mill in Kilmarnock to the resource centre. The next show will be on Monday 4th August when we will be showing the Bob Hope/Bing Crosby classic ‘Road to Bali’. Films are chosen by those attending and the events are very popular. Football Reminiscence Group The group has had a permanent change of venue and will now meet at the resource centre. Pies and cakes from local shop Bakery Bites were well received! Everything went well and a good time was had by all, with music and a great presentation from Lawrence. The next meeting will be on Monday 18th August. th

These items lead to great conversations about football. A new group, Darvel Sporting Memories, will be commencing in September. Birthday Celebration On 19th May the Football Memories Group celebrated the 80th birthday of Eric Caldow, ex-rangers and Scottish International player. Musical Minds Musical Minds were chosen again this year to be supported by ‘A Choired Taste’, who perform throughout Europe and raise money for local charities. Musical Minds were presented with a cheque for £2000 on 26th February by Provost Jim Todd. Musical Minds would like to thank A Choired Taste for their support which helps the group to continue their weekly meetings. Musical Minds attended a concert, performed by Loudoun Musical Society, at Winton Place Church on 5th March. £500 was raised to help support the work of Alzheimer Scotland in East Ayrshire, with the vote of thanks being given by Elspeth Wallace. And the group has recently enjoyed visits from professional musicians of the Glasgow Symphony Orchestra and a group called ‘Sax Ecosse’. After Musical Minds those who wish can saunter to Café Koko for tea and fun with a maximum donation of £5. In 2011 Musical Minds brought out their Charity single “If we hold on together” which sold over a thousand copies and helped to raise funds and awareness for the group. Now, three years later, Musical Minds is proud to announce that they are working on a full album. It will be called, “It just takes love” and is a live recording of a session of Musical Minds. The hopes are that the album will help raise people’s spirits especially if they can’t attend the group. It will include

Saturday 5th July saw 31 managers from Homebase and Argos come to Kilmarnock for their team building day. They spent this one day working together to transform an overgrown and run down area, at the back of the Howard Centre, into an area which can now be developed into a beautiful intergenerational garden.

The task even included knocking down one huge shed and fixing and painting another shed.

After the managers had enjoyed a barbeque in the garden they then left it for future guests to enjoy. It is expected that the garden will be completed by the beginning of October and will include a sensory area, a place to relax, raised beds, an art area, and a place to teach the younger generation some of the good old Kilmarnock DRC, 8-12 College Wynd, Kilmarnock KA1 1HN

Carers Meetings The carers group enjoyed a ‘summer social’ as their last meeting on 8th July, before taking a break for the summer. The group will restart in September and staff hope that holding a group during the day may allow more carers to attend. Carers will be notified when the next meeting is so watch the post towards the end of August. New carers always warmly welcomed and old friends as well!
