ZOO PALAST

The Tiergarten is Berlin’s answer to Central Park. The city’s oldest park covers 200 hectares – and offers plenty of space for a relaxing stroll, a trip in a rowing boat, or even just lazing in the sun.

Originally built in 1956/57 as a premiere cinema by the architects Paul Schwebes, Hans Schoszberger, and Gerhard Fritsche for the Berlin Film Festival, the Zoo Palast was re-inaugurated in 2013. The cinema is a cubic structure on a trapezoidal floor plan, covered in pale yellow ceramic tiles.

UMLAUFTANK Umlauftank 2 (“Circulation Tank 2”) is a striking research facility built between 1967 and 1974 by Ludwig Leo as an architectural experiment, machine and Pop Art piece all in one.

GALERIE MAX HETZLER When Max Hetzler moved his gallery from Cologne to Berlin in 1996, he immediately caused a stir in the art scene with eminent contemporary works by artists such as Jeff Koons and Gerhard Merz. KANT-GARAGE Built in the New Objectivity style in 1929/30, the Kant-Garage was Berlin‘s first multistory parking garage. Constructed in reinforced concrete, the garage features a double helix ramp system and parking spaces for 300 cars. C/O BERLIN IN AMERIKA HAUS In 2000, the photographer Stephan Erfurt, designer Marc Naroska, and architect Ingo Pott founded an exhibition center for photography, showcasing both renowned artists as well as newcomers. C/O underwent restructuring to become a non-profit foundation in 2013, and the project is now set to move to its new premises, Amerika Haus, in 2014. Designed by the architect Bruno Grimmek, Amerika Haus was built in 1956/57 to accommodate the United States Information Service (USIS). BIKINI-HAUS The Bikini-Haus is a six-story, low-rise building dating from 1955–57. Between the upper floors and mall area below there was originally an open story with views over the zoo – an unusual feature that gave the building its name. ROGACKI

The Deutsche Oper opera house was built between 1956–61 as a functionalist structure in glass and reinforced concrete. Fritz Bornemann designed an auditorium with seating for 1,865 guests. The windowless facade in rough-textured concrete is a distinctive feature. Surviving parts of the back of the earlier building were reconstructed in subsequent years.

Charlottenburg’s first eel and fish smokehouse was founded in 1928, and the family business has since established itself as a West Berlin favorite. As a mix of snack bar and gourmet shop, Rogacki serves up everything from cold-smoked salted mackerel, to quail eggs and even ox tongue.

KAISER WILHELM MEMORIAL CHURCH The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was designed by the architect Franz Schwechten as a memorial to Kaiser Wilhelm I. Built from 1891 to 1895, the Romanesque Revival church in the shape of a Latin cross was the focal point of the neighborhood. Having suffered extensive damage in World War II, the ruins were preserved as a memorial. Two new buildings by Egon Eierman were constructed between 1959 and 1961: a hexagonal tower housing a wedding and baptismal chapel, and an octagonal main building. IMPORT PROJECTS Since moving from London to Berlin in 2012, the curators Anja Henckel and Nadim Samman have been enriching the local art scene with their art space Import Projects. KADEWE “Kaufhaus des Westens” (Department Store of the West), or KaDeWe for short, is more than just a shopping haven for lovers of designer fashion and gourmet food – it is an icon of West Berlin. Built in 1907, the historic building was gutted in a fire in World War II, and then reopened in 1950. While Berlin was divided, the department store was a symbol of the free and affluent West. LITERATURHAUS

The artist David Lieske and DJ Peter Kersten opened their gallery, Mathew, in 2012, and have since won acclaim for presenting young “artists’ artists” – artists admired by other artists. Lieske and Kersten have also run the music label Dual Records since 1999.

The landmarked building was completed in 1889 for Richard Hildebrandt, captain of the first German North Pole expedition. Since 1986, this literary institute has organized events, symposia, and exhibitions on contemporary literature.

Villa Grisebach is one of the most prestigious auction houses for art and photography. Located right next to the Literaturhaus, the villa’s doors are also open for public exhibitions.

The gallery owner from Cologne Daniel Buchholz and his partner Christopher Müller opened this branch in Charlottenburg in 2008, and exhibit internationally renowned artists such as Isa Genzken and Wolfgang Tillmans.
