I hope all you children will help Po out in his journey to be a better friend to others! PO YES! I want BFFs! Shifu, can you please tell me how I can gain many BFFs? Shifu Of cos I can! The best way to have BFFs is to be a BFF (Best Friend Forever) to the friends you have around you. Share some of the problems that you faced, and let me help you. PO

Well, when I first entered Kidztopia Kungfu Academy, I met my first friend Tigress (show picture on screen).

This is a little embarrassing to say but there are times when my friend Tigress bullies me. She can be mean at times and she doesn’t know how much I dislike it. What should I do Shifu? Shifu Hmmmm, Tigress is one of my strongest disciple. She is bold and overachieving but she has another side to her that you may not have seen. Could you give me an example of her bullying you? PO

Well the other day I was asking her for the time! Do you the game “What’s the time now Mr Wolf?” (Shifu looks confused) Shifu, I will get the children to show you what the game is like. But we will change the title to “What’s the time now, Miss Tigress?” Children, we’re going to test out and see if Tigress is indeed fierce ok? Oh, I have a games host today to help me out. Let’s have them give us instructions for the game!

Instructions: • Leader to get a child to be Mr Tiger/Miss Tigress and he/she will stand at the further end (where the masking tape is) with his/her back turned away • The remaining children to stand at the starting line (where the other masking tape is) at the other end opposite Mr Tiger/Miss Tigress • Leader to ensure Mr Tiger/Miss Tigress and the children are in place and once ready they can begin the game • The children will call out, “What’s the time now, Mr Tiger/Miss Tigress ?” and wait for him/her to answer a time (eg. It’s 2 o’clock) • The children will advance the number of steps that Mr Tiger/Miss Tigress said (eg. 2 steps) and then repeat the chant (“What’s the time now Miss Tigress), wait for a response and advance the number of steps stated by Miss Tigress again. • The goal for the children is to successfully touch the back of Mr Tiger/Miss Tigress without being caught by him/her. • Mr Tiger/Miss Tigress can at any point shout "DON’T DISTURB ME" after the children asked for a time and then chase the children. • Once the children run past their safety line (the line where they started), the are safe from Mr Tiger/Miss Tigress. Reward: The first child to reach the safety line will be the next Mr Tiger/Miss Tigress Penalty: If the child has been caught by Mr Tiger/Miss Tigress, he/she will be out of the game for one round.

So children, did you find her fierce? I personally think she’s quite fierce. It is like that with Miss Tigress, sometimes when I get too close to her, she would chase me down!

Shifu Hmmmm, Tigress can be fierce but she has another side of her that you may not see (show picture). Actually, Tigress is a warm and compassionate person who loves the people around her.

Po, there are times when we have to be patient and try to see a better side of those who pick on you and you set a good example to this person. Only then can you be a better friend. Thanks Shifu! Those are wise words! Indeed, there is a different side to Tigress that I’ve not seen and I should to try and set an example for her even if it is difficult for me. Shifu Hmmmm, Mantis is a fast and strong disciple of mine. However, he can be a little sensitive over things like his height. Perhaps children, you can play this game to better understand how to be a better friend to friends who are sensitive! Let’s have the games host up to join us again! *Disclaimer* The game in YouTube is for reference, it is different from the game listed on the left because of the lack of space that we have for running in our centres. It has been changed the game to a tossing match instead.

Preparation/Set up: - 9 squares drawn using masking tape in the fashion of a typical tic tac toe game on the ground (each square just needs to be big enough for a crushed paper ball ) - draw starting line using masking tape, as shown below - 8 crushed paper balls (4 green and 4 yellow)

Objective: To stand behind the line and throw the crushed balls within the 9 squares to form a straight line. Instructions: - The group would be formed into separated into two different teams (Team A & Team B). - Both teams would line up behind the starting line and take turns to throw a bean bag into the tic tac toe squares. - If the crushed ball lands within the square, the crushed ball is counted and stays within the square. If the crushed ball touches any of the lines of the square, the games host will shout “SENSITIVE ZONE”, and the crushed ball will be removed from the Tic Tac Toe area. - There cannot be two crushed balls in one square. If a second crushed ball lands on a square that already has one, it will be removed from the Tic Tac Toe area. - The first team to form a straight line (as per Tic Tac Toe rules) will win. Reward: A snack is given to every team that wins one round.

Shifu! I think I understand how to be a better friend to Mantis already! There are certain issues that Mantis is sensitive about and I should try to be careful how I trend upon those areas. Shifu Yes Po! I’m very glad you understood the lesson! When we are with friends who are insecure or sensitive, we need to be careful with our words and actions! We should show them that we care for them and try to build them up while being sensitive to areas that they are having difficulties in. PO

Woohoo! I am on the way to become a super good BFF! By the way Shifu, later in the afternoon, I will be going to town with Monkey (show picture of Monkey)! He is a very fun friend to be around because his so easy-going and funny!

But I’m worried because there are times he gets into trouble. Like there are times when he gets too playful and causes some mischief. Is there any way that I can be a better friend to him? Shifu Hmmmmm, Monkey can be rather mischievous at times and I had to scold him a few times already. He is quite street smart and likes to fool around. Well children, how can we help Po be a better friend to someone like Monkey? Perhaps we can play this game and find out! PO

Oh, before we play the new game, I want to tell you that I find it quite intimidating to be around Crane too because his smart and intelligent. There are times when I also feel that he can be a little stubborn and does not care too much about other people’s opinions and feelings too.

Shifu Hmmmm… Crane is intelligent and smart. He usually thinks a lot and speaks his mind. I’ve also noticed that there are times when he does not take other people’s ideas into account because he thinks he is always right. Perhaps I can show you how to be a better friend to Crane through another game called “Jigsaw treasure hunt”. I shall make the next game a MEGA game for everyone, with two games combined into one! PO

Woohoo! I am ready. Let’s bring the games host on stage! (Games Host to come on stage to give instructions for the games. Shifu will give the commands for “Shifu says”.)

MEGA GAME (25 mins) Objective: For part 1 of MEGA GAME, the children are to do only what Shifu says. Whoever does not do what Shifu says will be disqualified from part 2 of the game. The more players there are from each team for the part 2 of MEGA GAME, the more likely the team will win!

Part 1: Shifu says (10 mins) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vl2CAdLobM) Preparation: Use masking tape to draw out a rectangular space to set apart as “penalty corner”. Assign a leader to be the guard for “penalty corner”. Objective: Do only what Shifu says Instructions: • • •

Shifu will stand in front of the players to tell them what they must do. The players must only obey commands from Shifu that begin with the phrase “Shifu Says” (e.g. “Shifu says touch your nose” then the rest of the players must touch their nose) If Shifu n does not use the phrase “ Shifu says” and begin with eg,”raise your right hand”, and if the player raises their right hand, then they are eliminated. They have to withdraw from the game and the consequence is they are not allowed to participate in Part 2 of MEGA GAME. They have to sit within an area drawn out as “penalty corner” until the whole MEGA GAME ends.

Part 2: Jigsaw Treasure Hunt (15 mins) (Children who are seated in the “penalty corner” will not participate in the game unless a BFF from the same group comes to the guard to redeem them with 10 star jumps.) Preparation: Hide 6 sets of jigsaw puzzles that are created using pictures of Po and his friends using blue tac all around the room. A few cut out troll faces will also be hidden. These are items to distract the children from finding the exact puzzle. Each set has a coloured sticker that is pasted behind each piece of the puzzle. Objective: Find the missing jigsaw puzzles to piece together the complete picture of Po and his friends. Instructions: • • • • • • •

Each group will be assigned a color that is specific to the set of jigsaw puzzle that they are supposed to find. Children are to search around the specified area for their missing jigsaw puzzle pieces to piece together the complete picture of Po and his friends Each child can at any one time hold up to two pieces only while moving around. Holding the piece(s), they have to go back to their respective group and try to piece together the picture or they can find the other missing pieces. There will be a few troll face pieces that are there to distract the child (they are to ignore the pieces and put it back to the same place and continue with the game) The group first to finish will have to have all the members seated in a circle and shout “WE HAVE COMPLETED!” The game ends when every team completes their puzzle or when the time is up.

Reward: A snack is given to the team that wins the MEGA GAME. Shifu Well Po, have you understood how to be better friend to Monkey and stop him from getting in trouble?

Yes Shifu! It is ok for my friend Monkey to be playful at the right time. However, it is important for me to remind him that there are consequences when we do not follow

instructions! Just like the game “Shifu Says”, we need to follow the instructions otherwise there might be certain consequences that we may not like. Shifu Hmmmm…. Indeed, Po. There is a proper time and place for everything and I’m glad you now know how be a better friend to Monkey. When we are with friends who are very playful, we must lovingly remind them that there can be a consequence in not obeying instructions or not studying hard! PO

Thanks Shifu, I now understand how to be a better friend with Monkey.

Shifu Hmmmm… Well Po, I hope you understand how to be a better friend to Crane too. While Crane can be smart and he knows a lot of things, we can gently remind him that he may not know everything and would require everyone’s effort to succeed, just like the way the teams worked together to find the treasure. PO

Yes Shifu! I get it now! My friend Crane may know a lot but by having everyone contribute, we can work together and succeed together to do greater things. To be a better friend to Crane who is stubborn, I can try to show him that other people’s opinion and ideas matter just as much as his!

Shifu Hmmmm, that is right Po! I’m glad that you have learnt how to be a better friend to Tigress, Mantis, Monkey and Crane. PO Indeed Shifu. Would you mind if I ask you one last piece of advice?

Ever since I’ve arrived, my friend Viper (show picture of snake) has been very kind and generous to me. She has helped me fit into this Kungfu Academy from day 1 and has helped me a great deal! Is there anything I can do to be a better friend to her? Shifu Viper is indeed a good disciple of mine. She is warm hearted and I’ve noticed her helping everyone around her. I’m glad that you would want to try to be a better friend to her Po! However, Shifu is getting a little old and needs to rest. Perhaps all of you children and

you, Po, can break up into your small groups and learn from your group leaders about the special friendship of David and Jonathan in the Bible. Kungfu Practice Time (20 mins)

A. CONNECT Ask the children if they have friends who are like Tigress, Mantis, Crane, Monkey or Viper.

B. INTO THE WORD Share with the children about the friendship of David and Jonathan Many years ago in Israel, there were two people named David and Jonathan . They were best of friends and spent a lot of time together. Even though Jonathan ’s father was the king and Jonathan was the next in line, he knew that God has given the kingdom of Israel to David. He never showed any form of jealousy or anger for that. In fact, he continued to show love and care for David and encouraged him as much as possible. There was even one time when Jonathan’s father, King Saul, tried to kill David and Jonathan saved his life! Well, many years passed and David’s BFF Jonathan had passed away defending his country from invaders. Jonathan’s son, Melphiboseth was only five years old when his father died because of war. The child's nurse hearing about war, fled with him and stumbling in her haste, the child was thrown to the ground and maimed in both his feet, and he was unable to walk thereafter. He later found a refuge in the house of Machir, by whom he was brought up. In time, when David became king, he remembered Jonathan and took in his son in and cared for him. He even let Jonathan’s son dine on the same table as him every night out of the special friendship Jonathan and he had. What is one thing we can learn from how David and Jonathan? They were BFF to each other, putting their friend’s needs before themselves. They appreciated and helped each other when they were both alive. Even when one died, the friendship still runs deep. They were thankful for each other.

So, one way that Po can start being a better friend to Viper is by being thankful for all the good things that Viper has done and by showing appreciation to her in little ways. Celebrate Friends!

C. APPLICATION Have the children share the name of one friend whom they will appreciate this week. Pair the visitor up with a GKidz child. Have the GKidz child do the SG50 Favour Blessing Prayer with visitors. Have the children spend time together as a group to eat/share the food that they have won. They can also go to the “Photo Corner” to use the props to take pictures with one another.
