Art is all about creative exploration at this age! We encourage preschoolers to show us what they can make! Our art studio for kids is a fun, safe, supportive atmosphere. This class is led by an experienced pre-school teacher.

CLAY ART

All of our clay classes are held in our Pottery Studios. Our staff of artists, who are experienced in working with all aspects of clay art, encourage the kids to create sculptures and vessels that express imagination… but with an eye toward learning what it takes to transform clay into successful ceramic art. Manipulating clay builds important skills including hand eye coordination, structural analysis, spatial relationships, and sequential procedures…who knew that could be so much fun!

These classes are a spin-off of our wildly successful Art a la Carte summer classes! Miss Mary Jo and Mr. Torrey lead the way as both groups meet together each Monday. We will explore many aspects of creative expression with the kids… introducing old and new ways to use traditional art materials. Painting, drawing, constructing, printing, cutting, pasting; it all comes together in this awesome hour of art! The instruction is age appropriate, creative driven, with a focus on exploration of materials and individual style! Guest artists will occasionally join in the fun!

Drawing Lessons for Older Children and Teens

We believe that everyone can learn to draw. We believe that the initial desire to “make a mark” is at the core of being human. The skill of drawing should be nourished in all children. Recognizing that drawing is a skill that needs to be practiced, just like music or dance, a child’s initial scribbles will mature when given the opportunity to learn more about what they see and how to render it. Group drawing lessons are a way for young people to come together to share time and space while enjoying an otherwise solitary activity! Artist Jennifer Voegtle gives individual attention and personalized instruction in a small group drawing lesson.

PRINTMAKING (Gr.4+) Introducing Graphic Design to Kids Our kids are visually bombarded from the day they are born with branding and logos and prints on everything they wear and use! Designing is communicating and good design can be learned! Let’s let them design a brand name, a logo, a sign, anything that reflects who they are…and teach them how to share it with their world…using printing processes. Mr. Torrey shares his love of design and printing in this class for kids who like to draw and leave their unique mark!

MAKE IT (Gr.4+)

Find out what happens when you recycle, upcycle, uncycle, ubercycle, retrocycle, transcycle, just simply make stuff out of other stuff!! Whatever you call it, it’s a fun way to stretch creative minds.

BURN IT (Gr.4+) This is an old art medium that has an appeal that is timeless. Using an electric wood burning tool and

various sized tips students will learn how to produce etched marks on soft wood surfaces. We will practice on wood scraps before moving on to a wooden plaque and box.

Note to parents: Wood burning tips are extremely hot and will burn skin if misused. Every effort will be made to stress safety and respect for the tool. Please consider whether your child is ready for this level of focus and compliance to rules before enrolling in this class.

TAPE IT (Gr.4+)

The Arts Center was the recipient of a GENEROUS gift of duck tape from the ShurTape Co. We will put it to good use in this class as we create large wall canvases using this tape as our art medium!

COOKING CLASSES C.I.T. CHEF IN TRAINING Level 1 (Grade 2)

These kids are newbies with knives, kitchen equipment, reading recipes, measuring accurately, reading labels, comparing nutritional info and basic cooking terms…. so this is a good intro.

C.I.T. CHEF IN TRAINING Level 2 (Grade 3-4-5)

This level is for the older kids. Some have been cooking with Ms. Mary Jo for 5 years now, and quite frankly, some are almost ready to teach!
