KID Museum Apprenticeship Program Application Spring 2017 About KID Museum: KID Museum is an emerging children’s museum in Montgomery County geared toward elementary and middle school-age children (ages 6-14), and focused on inspiring the next generation to invent the future with imagination, resourcefulness and compassion. KID Museum is built on three core themes: (1) engaging kids in imaginative and creative “maker” activities that integrate science, technology, engineering, math and art; (2) encouraging kids to explore world cultures and appreciate diversity; and (3) promoting social responsibility and active global citizenship. In October of 2014, KID Museum launched its first home in the Davis Library in Bethesda. This is a first step toward the museum’s broader vision of establishing a permanent home in Montgomery County. KID Museum at Davis Library offers children and families the opportunity to explore and invent using a wide range of materials, tools and technologies. The space features a digital media lab, a workshop that integrates electronics, textiles and recycled materials, and 21 st century tools such as 3D printers and vacuum molders. Apprentices, along with KID Museum educators, will facilitate projects and exploration in a mix of “open explore” drop-in sessions and more structured workshops. Activities are geared toward elementary and middle school aged children of all backgrounds, with special programs for field trips and workshops aligned with school curricula. The KID Museum is located on the lower level of the Davis Library, 6400 Democracy Blvd., Bethesda, MD. More information on KID Museum can be found at www.kid-museum.org

Apprenticeship Program The Apprenticeship Program at KID Museum is modeled on successful mentor and explainer programs in world-renowned science centers across the country that cultivate youth as facilitators for a comprehensive educational experience. Apprentices will work directly with the lead artists and makers as well as the museum’s creative director and program managers to help deliver successful programming, which builds on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and arts skills. The maker activities at KID Museum require a level of engagement and persistence that is supported by the role of apprentices as staff extenders. Under this program, participants will be responsible for directly assisting with the facilitation of workshops, programming activities and museum exhibits. Apprentices often develop a lifelong interest in sciences and arts and many are inspired to pursue careers in these fields following their apprenticeships. Specific duties for KID Museum apprentices, in addition to program interpretation, will include: supplies and materials maintenance, floor management, workshop registration facilitation, programming development, exhibit planning, and customer service. On-going training for apprentices will be held in a variety of contexts with museum personnel involved in programming, education, exhibits and operations. The training will provide apprentices with the skills that they need to be successful not only during their commitment to KID Museum, but in their future careers as well. Apprentice applicants should possess a love of learning and a desire to engage with the public. In addition to earning Student Service Learning hours, Apprentices also have the opportunity to receive the President's Volunteer Service Award, one of the premier volunteer and service recognition programs.
