Key Assessment 3: Reflective Clinical Supervision Cycle

1. Brief Description of the Assessments and Their Use in the Program The Reflective Clinical Supervision Cycle is the culminating assignment and assessment in EDA 720, Supervision and Improvement of Instruction, that demonstrates the ability of the candidate to apply all of the standards and practices for effective development of a supervisory plan for classroom-based instruction and professional development of teachers including development of a culture of collaboration and shared goals. The candidates have previously implemented on site each part of the cycle separately. The goal of this assignment is to integrate each step into a whole on site and to reflect on the results. The candidate implements and videotapes a reflective clinical supervision cycle on site which includes a planning conference, an observation, a feedback conference, and a collaborative reflection. The candidates reflect on all parts and aspects of the cycle, in particular, how they performed on the videotaped planning conference, feedback conference, collaborative reflection, and a final reflection on growth throughout the whole process.

2. Description of How This Assessment Specifically Aligns with the ELCC Standards Cited in Section III. This key assessment is aligned with the following ELCC standards. It also aligns with NYS Standard d, subcategories 1,2,3,4,5,6,8 and CSI Goals 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 3A, 3B, 3C. 1.3 Implements a school vision of learning – the candidate works with teachers and students to improve instruction through the Reflective Clinical Supervision Cycle. 1.4 Steward a School Vision of Learning – the candidate facilitates the teacher’s vision of teaching and learning through the Reflective Clinical Supervision Cycle.

ELCC

2.1 Promote a Positive School Culture – the candidate’s collaboration with the teacher through the Reflective Clinical Supervision Cycle enhances the school culture. 2.2 Provide Effective Instructional Program – improvement of instruction is the basis of the Reflective Clinical Supervision Cycle. 5.1 Acts with Integrity – The collaborative process for improving instruction promotes integrity for the candidate and teacher participant in the cycle. 5.2 Acts Fairly – The use of observation instruments that the teacher can analyze promotes fairness. 5.3 Acts Ethically – The planning conference allows the teacher to present his or her needs, problems, or expertise and the observation instruments promote openness and objectivity.

3. Brief Analysis of the Data Findings Candidates tend to perform relatively well on this key assessment. Instructors are able to work rather closely with candidates throughout the creation of this assignment, which surely helps ensure the higher levels of performance. However, candidates do perform somewhat less well on some other key assessments (e.g., the action research project), indicating that this assessment represents an area were candidates may find growth easier than for some other areas. The instructors continue to address the candidates’ areas of relatively greater need to try to create as highly qualified and professionally balanced candidates as possible.

4. Interpretation of How Data Provide Evidence for Meeting Standards Candidates demonstrate at least adequate facility with the content knowledge—and its application—represented in this assessment battery.

5. Assessment Documentation: (a) Description of the Assessments; Reflective Clinical Supervision Assignment (ELCC Standards 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3) If the colleague on site with whom you practiced the planning conference is not the participant for the whole clinical supervision cycle, find another teacher who will volunteer to do the complete cycle. Complete the cycle on site and prepare the following written report: A. Summarize or recount each phase of the cycle: planning conference, observation, post-conference, and collaborative reflection. A video- or audiotape can substitute for the written description.

B. Analyze the data from each approach choice you made and then interpret the data. 1. How much teacher input was there in the planning conference? Would you recommend a change in the approach to this teacher in another planning session? Why? 2. Did the observation tool reveal the behaviors on which you and your colleague agreed to focus? How or why not? Was the observation tool you chose appropriate and effective? Is it a tool you would use again? Why or why not? What other tool would you suggest? 3. Which interpersonal approach did you use in the post-conference? Why? What was the teacher's response? How well did it work? 4. What were the teacher's reactions to the process? How effective was the collaborative reflection? What did you learn?

C. Provide a final reflection on the whole process, that is, your personal evaluation of what worked and was of value and what you will think about doing differently in the future.
